On this Veterans Day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of our military service members and their families. Your commitment to our country is deeply valued, and we are grateful for the many ways you serve.
We also acknowledge the unique challenges that military life can bring. Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence (IPV), remains a critical issue within our military communities. Studies show that between 13% and 58% of veterans and active-duty military members experience IPV. Women veterans who identify as lesbian, bisexual, or questioning are two to three times more likely to report experiencing IPV than heterosexual women veterans.
If you or someone you know is impacted by IPV, please remember that help is available. The New Mexico Domestic Violence Service Providers network (https://www.nmcadv.org/find-nm-resources) is here to support military survivors and their families. They can assist you in navigating both civilian resources and the Department of Defense's Family Advocacy Program, which addresses domestic violence in military communities. More information on this program can be found at (https://www.militaryonesource.mil/programs/family-advocacy-program/).
On this day of honor and remembrance, let's also reaffirm our commitment to support and uplift every member of our military and their families with the respect, safety, and well-being they deserve.
