I work with the UNM Autism Programs in Albuquerque, NM. I am working on our next webcast entitled: Family Disaster Plan for Families Living with Autism. Is there anything that you, as a parent/caregiver/guardian or self-advocate, would like to know? Thank you for sending me an email at [email protected]
Hello All!

I was wondering if anyone had any information/interventions/resources/replacement behaviors for when a child with ASD has the impulse to destroy/smash projects that were built.
I understand that this may be done for sensory input, or when a child is upset. In this particular case, they are items that have brought joy to the family and the child is not observed to be angry (i.e. a Lego castle that the family built together, a snowman, a foam toy that he was using with his sibling). As soon as adult supervision is removed, these types of projects/items are smashed. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration!
DDPC SUMMIT for advocacy
---------- Forwarded message ---------
From: Ekman, Daniel, DDPC

Hello everyone and we are excited to have you all join us for the 2020 Summit on Advocacy. This year’s event is our first online only event. We have a great turnout and a great event planned over the next four weeks. Below are just some items we wanted to make sure to address. We are also attaching the Program for the Summit on Advocacy. We are also attaching information about the ABLE NM Program for all conference participants. We will send out an email the week before each of the sessions with whatever PowerPoint or presentation materials we receive. Just a reminder that next week’s session is from 2-4 pm on Monday, September 14.

The link to join the Summit on Advocacy sessions is https://us02web.zoom.us/w/84182975746?tk=iNtkFxJI8BDVG9m0br1Mrx2wivszk_9TQj6d5XTQGYI.DQIAAAATmbJFAhZGaWd4MWdzZ1NxcUFKeEpaMUhLNWNRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA&pwd=WFNTakNTVitqVDNJdnM1U2tUS3laQT09 and enter the passcode 486327.
If you are presenting, please join the session at least 15 minutes early. This way, you can make sure you can get on without any difficulties. The room will open at 1:30 for the CSA staff to make sure everything runs smoothly. Presenters are welcome to join at 1:30 as well. This includes those individuals presenting in the second half of the sessions from 3-4 pm that day.
If you are not a presenter, please join closer to 2:00 pm, which is when we will start presenting the sessions.
When each presentation starts, type your name in the chat along with where you are joining from. This will serve as our sign-in sheet. Please sign in at the beginning of the 2-3 pm session and the beginning of the 3-4 pm session.
If you run into zoom problems during the session, please contact us at [email protected] or [email protected]
Please mute yourself when the presentation is going on and use the chat to type in questions and comments. Each session including questions will last about an hour.
At the end of each class, be sure to go to https://s.surveyplanet.com/iHWFili27 and fill out an evaluation form for the class. This help us to know how well we did as well as know how many people attended the session.
If anyone needs some assistance in figuring out zoom, look at these training videos: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/206618765-Zoom-Video-Tutorials
Attached is a description of each of the sessions.

Is it appropriate to ask for possible options for getting a diagnosis on here? I’m in need of a mental health professional who specializes in autism and particularly in autism for teenage girls.

I have two children (out of 5) that display traits of autism and it’s killing me to watch them in so much emotional pain over this. I have tried contacting a company and they put us on a diagnosis waiting list two years ago.

Is there a way to get in to someone sooner? A psychologist maybe that you would recommend? It’s been a long road and I’m tired of people who don’t understand telling me that my kids are fine since they’re generally performing well at school. Any recommendations would be extremely helpful.
We are pleased to offer a Family Training on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), “You’re the Expert” via zoom in August. This training will be provided solely in Spanish and was created specifically for families and is being offered to those families in Gadsden and the surrounding areas. However, this training has also been opened up to all Spanish speaking families throughout the state. Each family member who registers can also invite one provider to view as well, who will also need to register. Providers must register with a family.

There is limited space, so please register early.
