New Mexico Technology Assistance Program

New Mexico Technology Assistance Program NMTAP provides technology related assistance for individuals with disabilities of any age, any disability, any income who are living anywhere in New Mexico.

NMTAP offers free services to New Mexicans with disabilities to help them get the assistive technology (AT) services they need. NMTAP is a statewide program designed to increase knowledge of, access to, and acquisition of assistive or adaptive technology for anyone with any disability, anywhere in the state, of any age. There are four main components of which include financial assistance, assistive technology device loans, device demonstrations, and device re-utilization. Securing loans to purchase devices can be difficult. NMTAP partners with the community based organization, San Juan Center for Independence (SJCI) and area banks. We offer individuals with disabilities affordable loan solutions statewide that enable the purchase of equipment you need to succeed in your business or to succeed in life. NMTAP has devices and software that can be borrowed on a short term basis for individuals with disabilities through the Device Loan Program. We have approximately 1,800 assistive technology devices for loan. Our motto is, "We have over a thousand devices with infinite possibilities of how they might be configured for each individual!"

Device demonstrations allow consumers to compare features and benefits of a particular device or category of devices. Demonstrations are for individuals, or a small group of individuals to assist in making an informed choice on what devices will aid in their independence. In some situations it can be difficult to obtain an assistive medical device or a computer to access the community. NMTAP partners with the community based program, BackInUse and DiverseIT of Adelante Development Center to provide this service to individuals with disabilities. New Mexico Technology Assistance Program (NMTAP) is a program of the State of New Mexico Governor's Commission on Disability, under a grant from the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Community Living.

It’s #TechTuesday!
Featured AT Device: The Magnilink Zip
The Magnilink Zip is a large, desktop digital magnifier that is portable and versatile. Not only can the Magnilink Zip magnify anything placed beneath it’s camera, it can also switch color contrasts and read text aloud. Which is a great feature for individuals with low vision or individuals who have a learning disability. The camera can be swiveled around into “selfie mode” to act as a magnified mirror or can be used for distance viewing. An X/Y table can be added on for easy reading.
If you would like to loan this device or check out other AT devices you can do so by calling 505-841-4464, sending us a message on Facebook, or view them in our Online Database at https://bit.ly/ATDatabase

Sanitizing has always been a part of NMTAP procedures but let us assure you this continues with careful vigor during this pandemic!
Shipping devices to individuals with disabilities has always been an option for New Mexican’s that are not located in the Albuquerque area. We have extended that service to those local to Albuquerque, free of charge, to continue to limit person-to-person contact.
All of the devices in our loan library are carefully handled and sanitized before shipment and after their return.
Thank you to our AT Coordinator Jesse Armijo (pictured below) for all your hard work in continuing to provide services to New Mexicans with disabilities.

If you have an Android phone or tablet, you may already be familiar with the Live Caption feature. If not, we highly recommend it for providing automated captioning.
