Facility will offer emergency space for up to 50
We envision an Albuquerque where homelessness is rare, short-lived and nonrecurring.
Heading Home is a New Mexico non-profit that runs several housing-first initiatives which seek to make experiences of homelessness rare, short-lived and non-recurring. Heading Home programs include Albuquerque Heading Home, Keeping Families Together, the Albuquerque Opportunity Center men’s emergency shelter, 24/7 Medical Respite, Veterans Transitional Housing and the ABQ Winter Shelter.

People who live nearby have raised some concerns. “They’re going to increase the number of homeless people in our area. These people should not be in their cars, they should be in a facility where they are dealing with their issues,” said Martinez Town President Loretta Naranjo Lopez.
Hoping to ease those concerns, Decker says they will have security at the sites and he has a lot of faith in this program. “Anyone who is a naysayer or who has concerns should come and be part of the program, come and see what is actually going on,” added Decker.

The One Albuquerque Fund is excited to see the recent article from News 13 covering the $50K match from for the amazing non-profit !
“We are honored to partner with One Albuquerque Fund to support Heading Home, an incredible organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of unhoused New Mexicans,” said Carolyn Ingram, plan president of Molina Healthcare of New Mexico
Heading Home will use the $100,000 funding to expand its behavioral health and medical services through its Albuquerque Street Connect program.
“Thank you to MolinaCares and One Albuquerque Fund for their support of one of the most vulnerable populations in our state, individuals experiencing homelessness who are in need of emergency medical services,” said Steve Decker, chief executive officer of Heading Home. “These funds will make a meaningful difference in the care and well-being of the people we serve as they get back on their feet.”
Heading Home’s Albuquerque Street Connect program is an outreach collaborative that assists individuals who have the highest records of utilization of emergency services and care, many of whom suffer from behavioral health issues, in establishing ongoing relationships that result in permanent supportive housing.
“The real magic of Heading Home’s programming is more than helping individuals navigate systems and placing families in homes, it is the cultivation of a relationship and trust that allows these greater outcomes to materialize,” said Hakim Bellamy, president of the board for One Albuquerque Fund. “This kind of ‘magic’ is a sincerity of effort that requires time and money. MolinaCares’ doubling of the One ABQ Fund’s initial investment, means Heading Home will have twice as much time and resource to do twice as much good.”

Humanity 33 () and CVS are asking for new or lightly worn coats of any size, Luna said. Hoodies and heavyweight shirts will not be accepted.
Humanity 33 will collaborate with another local nonprofit organization, Heading Home, for weekly pickups and delivery to different shelters and encampments across Albuquerque, according to Luna.
“It’s become pretty evident that there’s a great need for a lot of hands to really be involved in helping to turn around this crisis,” Luna said. “It’s gonna take all of us coming together to really find that solution.”
