Equality New Mexico is PROUD to have endorsed Roger and we are PROUD to stand by him today.

The article published by the Pinon Post is a shameful, violent, homophobic, political dog whistle that is reminiscent of a time in history when LGBTQ individuals were either oversexualized or stripped of sexuality completely in order to ostracize us or wipe away our identities. That is not the world we live in today.

Queer and Trans New Mexicans are more than our sexuality. We are teachers and family. We are mentors and civil servants. And Roger, he's the kind of generous leader we need to see in office today.

STATEMENT: Roger Montoya, Democratic candidate for House District 40, addresses his past

When I was asked to run for the State House, I knew Republicans and their allies would bring up whatever they could find to discredit me. After much reflection and advice, I decided to not let the fact of something I did nearly forty years ago, in a very different time and climate, prevent me from running. Serving others—working to improve the community I love—is my mission, my passion, and the work I will do the remainder of my days, whether I am elected NM House 40 Representative or not.

I am committed to telling the truth.

Thirty-eight years ago, as a 22-year-old struggling college student, I was a modern dancer and performer living in Los Angeles. I worked hard to earn my own way, never relying on anyone else, including my parents. I was auditioning for commercials and doing my best to succeed. Among those choices were two adult films I acted in as an adult, with other adults, in a very different environment and time. I am not proud of that choice, as I was young and naïve, but those experiences helped me to understand the exploitation young people face. Those experiences do not reflect who I am, and they are insignificant in the scope of my life’s work, yet they helped inspire my dedication to my community and the work I do to make sure that youth have opportunities, support and confidence.

Over the past three decades, I have brought people together from all walks of life to tackle some of our state’s most pressing issues. I’m proud of helping people in rural New Mexico deal with life-threatening illnesses during the AIDS and COVID pandemics. I am proud of bringing arts to the schools in a new and creative way that included an entire community. I am proud of the non-profits I’ve founded and the work they are doing today to inspire our community, to provide food and shelter to our homeless, to feed and nourish, and address chronic substance abuse. I am proud to have worked alongside so many in this community to bring change for the better, and nothing will change that.

If the Republican Party chooses to focus on something I did nearly four decades ago rather than how hard I will work to bring back our devastated economy, provide healthcare, create new jobs and industries, to improve our public schools, to fix our crumbling infrastructure, and to protect our land, acequias and our way of life, that is their choice. I trust the voters to make a better choice because we have so much at stake this November.

These are challenging times and I will be a truth-teller first and foremost, especially when it is relevant to the problems we are facing as a nation, a state and a community of Norteños.

Winning was never guaranteed, but I will continue to fight with respect and dignity for the very soul of this beautiful community.

“The truth will set you free.”- John 8:32

Our lives are on the line. The next Supreme Court Justice could be the deciding vote on protecting healthcare access, keeping abortion legal, our right to vote, human rights, and so much more. Giving Donald Trump another appointment to the Supreme Court could end our rights for an entire generation. We must stop him.

This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its opinion on three Title VII cases and ruled that LGBTQ+ employees are protected under current law! In the midst of the COVID-19 health crisis and vitally important nationwide demonstrations in support of Black lives and against systemic racism, today’s decision is heartening and encouraging.

This is a landmark moment for legal equality. The Supreme Court has ruled that companies don’t have a right to discriminate against LGBTQ people in the workplace. This historic decision says that LGBTQ people are, and should be, protected from discrimination under federal sex discrimination law.

Supreme Court Delivers Major Victory To LGBTQ Employees

The Supreme Court ruled that under federal law, employers cannot fire or otherwise discriminate against [LGBTQ+] workers based on sex, gender identity, and/or sexual orientation.
We take this win, and will continue to fight to eliminate discrimination beyond employment.

The Supreme Court says the federal ban on discrimination "based on sex" also applies to gay, lesbian, and transgender employees.

SAY WHAT?!

“Alexis Martinez Johnson: If the individual is employed, and they decide to be transgender and be in a situation like that, I think the employer should have the ability to make the decision, but we will see what the Supreme Court says, and we will follow the rule of the law.”

A crowded field is trying to take over New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District seat, which is being vacated by Ben Ray Lujan, who is running for U.S. Senate.

"I believe in what I'm doing. I've stood up for myself to make sure that it happens. That's what keeps me going," she said.

Same-Sex Couples Experience Higher Unemployment Rates Throughout an Economic Recovery - Center for American Progress

ACTION: SIGN OUR PETITION TO END BLOOD DONATION DISCRIMINATION

Abortion fund providers say global pandemic causing difficulties

Our partners at Indigenous Women Rising know that, even during this pandemic, access to reproductive healthcare (including abortion) is critical to transgender and queer communities. ✊🏾

"Lorenzo said that reproductive health care, including contraception, abortion, prenatal visits and giving birth, “will be impacted and none of these are elective." Lorenzo also expressed concern for those who identify as transgender, gender nonbinary, as well as for those who identify as women, and for immigrant communities."

New Mexico abortion fund providers are already seeing impacts as the public health emergency and financial crisis worsens during the COVID-19 global pandemic, according to advocates. A group of abo…

Disappointed in Adrian Carver's use of racism, classism, and hypocrisy in his attack ad against Adrian Barboa, a queer single mom of color. Please consider finding a new ED who understands intersectionality and the need for solidarity, even when ambition is at hand.
You are invited-> https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4257168 **Anne Frank Remembrance Day with Deborah Lipstadt, Sunday August 4, 2019 3 pm** The Santa Fe Distinguished Lecture Series and the Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival are sponsoring this Anne Frank Remembrance Day on Sunday, August 4, the 75 anniversary of the arrest and deportation of Anne Frank and her family. In a special event for New Mexico, Deborah Lipstadt will speak on Antisemitism: Here and Now on August 4 in Santa Fe at the James A. Little Theater at 3 pm. There will be a VIP reception for her after the talk. Her new book on Antisemitism, published earlier this year, sold out immediately and went into a second printing on the second week after its release. In addition to the American edition, it is now being published in England, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Israel. Lipstadt came to national attention in 2016 with the movie Denial in which she was played by Rachel Weisz, a movie about her international court case with David Irving, a Holocaust denier in England. Lipstadt had long fought Holocaust deniers, and in this court case she was able to prove the falsehoods of those who denied it happened. After a successful in in theaters, Denial can now be seen on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and other streaming services. Her TED talk abut the trial has received 1.2 million views. Prof. Deborah Lipstadt has held the Presidential appointment to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and represented President George W. Bush at the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. She is the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University. Her books include The Eichmann Trial, Denial: Holocaust History on Trial (a National Jewish Book Award-winner), Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory, and Beyond Belief: The American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust, 1933-1945. Public officials will help us in this program "United Against Antisemitism", an initiative of the Jewish Federation of New Mexico
