Zero Fares is an LGBTQ justice issue. Many q***r and trans folx need access to public transit for jobs, healthcare, and education! If we can't afford public transit we can't access the life-saving services we need!

Support our partners Together for Brothers in this fight for all of Albuquerque!

What’s happening with Zero Fares? In May 2021, the Albuquerque City Council approved $3 million for "free transit" or Zero Fares. While the city previously approved free fares for limited populations, this vote made Zero Fares available for everyone in the city of Albuquerque, eliminating barriers to transit access for all. The Albuquerque City Council is now considering reversing their decision.

Why #ZeroFares Are Important: ABQ Ride reports that: 74% of riders are low income; 73% of riders either don’t have a vehicle or their vehicle isn’t working; and vast majority of riders are people of color. Zero Fares are about equity (people most impacted getting what they need) and racial justice (addressing historic injustice and disparities based on ethnicity and race) solutions and the right direction for Albuquerque.

What can you do? First, as an individual contact city council and ask them to vote YES again to Zero Fares at bit.ly/abqzerofares. And also if you represent an organization/business/program/elected office please sign the Zero Fares Endorsement Letter at bit.ly/endorseabqzerofares.

We need the community's support before next week's city council meeting on Monday, September 20!

CW: S*xual Violence

LGBTQ youth deserve to learn how to negotiate boundaries, deserve to learn clearly about consent in a way that is empowering and healthy.

New Mexico doesn't currently have a standard for what Consent is when teaching S*x Ed. This is easy to fix: all young people should be taught that Consent is Informed, Active, and Voluntary -not just no means no, but ONLY yes means yes!

Sign our petition here to tell Governor Lujan Grisham and the State Legislature that we need to pass an Affirmative Consent law in 2022!

This week Texas enacted legislation that bans abortion after 6 weeks-before most people can even know they are pregnant. We are in fierce opposition to any such law that restricts access to reproductive care - not just because they are an attack on women, they are more than that. These laws are written, introduced, passed, and signed by people who want to control the bodies of most of our population. And bodily autonomy is KEY to our liberation, as q***r and trans people, as People of Color, all people who seek liberation must first have full control of our bodies, and our decisions about our bodies.

Anyone who can get pregnant deserves to make their own decisions about that pregnancy, without the interference of government.

So today, while we recommit to our advocacy work to protect access to the full range of healthcare, including abortion care, for all people: consider supporting an Abortion Fund that will help ease the burden from people who must now leave their home state of TX to seek the life-saving care they need.

School Boards play a critical role in our communities and are a crucial part of the process to achieve LGBTQ Liberation and safety.

Equality New Mexico will be announcing endorsements in School Board races across the state - because LGBTQ youth are extremely vulnerable and we must work hard to protect them! To be clear, we have not endorsed candidates for School Board in Albuquerque or otherwise, but as we have done in the past, we must take a moment to lift-up and clarify rumors and attacks that have come about a candidate, Julie Brenning, and her past views on marriage equality.

I personally have had a conversation with Julie, and many of the people supporting her campaign. She admits to being on a journey as it relates to LGBTQ issues, and we believe her on this. Equality New Mexico has been working to change hearts and minds on the topics of LGBTQ people and our liberation for 28 years, and we will continue to do so.

This means that we, as a community, must make space for folks who have completed, are still on, or may be beginning this journey. Not every New Mexican has the benefit of growing up knowing LGBTQ people and understanding who we are. Our movement has always depended upon the work we do to bring people along with us.

Let’s be clear, EQNM is NOT suggesting that everyone gets a free pass on historic views or statements that are homophobic or transphobic. That is not true, we will always consider it our role to call out, call in, and speak up around these statements. We will continue to do that.

In the case of Julie Brenning, however, we believe that she has truly evolved and changed her views on LGBTQ people. We will make public our endorsements once we’ve gone through the process, but right now we are grateful for her talking about her journey, grateful that she sought the education on these issues on her own, and that she has released a commitment to further LGBTQ liberation through education policy.

Always in the fight,

Marshall Martinez - Executive Director

LGBTQ Youth In NC -- And Beyond -- Find Community And Mental Health Spaces Online During The Pandemic

LGBTQ folks have long looked to the internet to build community. Without a permanent federal broadband subsidy to help everyone afford internet access, many, especially trans and q***r youth, will not be able to find the support & community they need. Ben Ray Luján & Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández understand that internet matters for everyone. #nmpol https://www.wfae.org/health/2021-06-16/building-community-and-mental-health-spaces-went-online-for-lgbtq-youth-in-north-carolina-and-beyond

The COVID-19 pandemic forced LGBTQ safe spaces to go online. Now that option may be here to stay.

Equality New Mexico is proud to endorse Bunnie Cruse for NM HD 28! http://bit.ly/EQNM4Bunnie
Bunnie is a Trans Latinx woman who has been helping our community for decades. She lived the life of so many q***r and trans people: poverty, hunger, homelessness, bullying; and she came out of it resilient and strong. She came out giving back to a community that often turned its back on her. Join us in telling the Bernalillo County Commission to make history by appointing Bunnie - and honor pride month too! http://bit.ly/EQNM4Bunnie

Disappointed in Adrian Carver's use of racism, classism, and hypocrisy in his attack ad against Adrian Barboa, a q***r single mom of color. Please consider finding a new ED who understands intersectionality and the need for solidarity, even when ambition is at hand.
You are invited-> https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4257168 **Anne Frank Remembrance Day with Deborah Lipstadt, Sunday August 4, 2019 3 pm** The Santa Fe Distinguished Lecture Series and the Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival are sponsoring this Anne Frank Remembrance Day on Sunday, August 4, the 75 anniversary of the arrest and deportation of Anne Frank and her family. In a special event for New Mexico, Deborah Lipstadt will speak on Antisemitism: Here and Now on August 4 in Santa Fe at the James A. Little Theater at 3 pm. There will be a VIP reception for her after the talk. Her new book on Antisemitism, published earlier this year, sold out immediately and went into a second printing on the second week after its release. In addition to the American edition, it is now being published in England, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Israel. Lipstadt came to national attention in 2016 with the movie Denial in which she was played by Rachel Weisz, a movie about her international court case with David Irving, a Holocaust denier in England. Lipstadt had long fought Holocaust deniers, and in this court case she was able to prove the falsehoods of those who denied it happened. After a successful in in theaters, Denial can now be seen on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and other streaming services. Her TED talk abut the trial has received 1.2 million views. Prof. Deborah Lipstadt has held the Presidential appointment to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and represented President George W. Bush at the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. She is the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University. Her books include The Eichmann Trial, Denial: Holocaust History on Trial (a National Jewish Book Award-winner), Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory, and Beyond Belief: The American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust, 1933-1945. Public officials will help us in this program "United Against Antisemitism", an initiative of the Jewish Federation of New Mexico
