Senator Schmedes doesn't think we deserve healthcare — Equality New Mexico

Senator Schmedes has introduced a bill to let healthcare providers refuse treatment to LGBTQ New Mexicans. Read out blog post below about this horrible bill, and Schmedes' history of working to exclude LGBTQ from access to healthcare.

Senator Greg Schmedes (R-SD 19) represents pieces of Bernalillo, Santa Fe, Sandoval, & Torrance Counties and  actively works against the LGBTQ community in New Mexico . In his time in the House and now the Senate,  he has introduced and sponsored many discriminator

You've heard us - We're rebuilding a movement. But what does this mean?
Here's how we're doing that!

The LGBTQ movement for liberation has been long, evolving, and continues to ebb and flow with time. Equality NM is much like this. Founded in 1993, we have had multiple names, various priority projects, many different leaders and our share of good times and rough times.  So when we say we a

What is happening today is Domestic Terrorism. In the days to come we CANNOT let this rest without addressing the realities of disproportionate and incredibly different responses to "protesters" based on their cause, skin color, and the makeup of their crowd.

Right now we are hoping for the safety of our friends and allies, our family in DC - members of congress, their staff, New Mexicans working for the federal Gov't, national advocacy organizations, and the citizens of DC.

An anti-discrimination bill to help protect the LGBTQ community in the state will be filed in January ahead of the state legislative session. State Sen. Jacob Candelaria, D-Albuquerque, is sponsori…

Congratulations to New Mexico's own Rep. Deb Haaland!

In New Mexico, there is an outdated, 1969, abortion ban on the books. With Roe v. Wade on the line at the Supreme Court, it must be repealed this legislative session- not only because it is the right thing to do, but because as queer and trans people, our liberation is bound up in the liberation of all people... especially those who have or will be denied control of their own bodies. Paid Sick Leave is an LGBTQ issue. LGBTQ exhibit disproportionately high instances of HIV/AIDS, cancer, and Mental/Emotional health issues. No one, including our Queer and Trans workers, should be forced to decide between earning enough money to survive and having time to seek health care.

If you live in Albuquerque take a moment now to urge the City Council to pass the Paid Sick Leave proposal this Monday!

And stay tuned for a statewide proposed solution to this LGBTQ health - public health - issue!

Bold Futures

Join our friends at Bold Futures who are screening this powerful film! Rebuilding a movement at Equality New Mexico means building strong, collaborative, relationships across identities, across issues, and across communities. Nowhere is that more true than in the fight LGBTQ people have always had over control of our own bodies - whether controlling our transitions or our reproductive health.
Don't miss this opportunity to learn and build our movement across New Mexico!

Bold Futures is hosting an online screening of the film Belly of the Beast 12/04- 12/11. It's a powerful film that exposes forced sterilization in California's prisons, and also highlights the power of organizing. If you are a Black, Indigenous, or formerly incarcerated person and would like a free ticket you can register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/belly-of-the-beast-film-screening-tickets-130317036765

If you would like to purchase a ticket you can buy one directly through local cinema The Guild Cinema here: https://www.guildcinema.com/movie/2853

Accessibility Supports: The online screening format will allow viewers to watch the film at whatever time of day or night works for you! The film is presented in English and has closed captioning available. Let us know if you have further accessibility needs we can support.

December 8th , 2020 at 5:30 - 7:00pm (MT) on Zoom

We are also hosting an amazing panel with Kelli Dillon, one of the impacted women from the film who organized for change, and systems impacted women from New Mexico. Panelists will share their reflections on the film and how people have been impacted in NM and beyond.

We know that Queer and Trans Americans, especially Queer and Trans People of Color are acutely aware of the implications of the Presidential Election. We may not know those results until late today… We will keep watching for them until they are final.

But Equality New Mexico will be working and building no matter what. Our work doesn’t stop on Election Day, it begins anew.

Will you join us in rebuilding this movement?

We may not know the results of all the Elections tonight. We cannot achieve liberation for all people, until we have valued the voices - and in this case the votes - of all people.

This year expect delays in counting ballots. If the results are taking time-it's not because something nefarious is happening - it’s because election officials are working to carefully count every vote.

10/31/2020

LGBTQ people are not strangers to violence or threats. In fact, our entire history is wrapped up in experiences of trauma. We also know all too well the realities of living in a world where the systems meant to protect people don’t necessarily protect us. It is important to remind ourselves that the Stonewall Riots starting on June 28th, 1969, are rooted in LGBTQ oppression, but also were a direct result of mistreatment by police and the six days that followed, had folks from various walks of life unite to demand justice from the cops. From the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s to the dismissal of hate-motivated violence in communities across this country, Queer and Trans people have not always been able to count on the support of law enforcement or the open arms of agencies whose mission is to support and assist all people.

Right now, hatred is being felt in an especially acute way and hatred and threats of violence are in fact being rewarded. And while LGBTQ people are feeling this violence, we know that LGBTQ people of color, women of color and Black and Indigenous people are always feeling these threats. We often have to make incredibly difficult decisions about where to go and how to handle violence or the threats of it.

It is crucial, now more than ever, that LGBTQ folx be the community we need, for each other. In the coming days, we can expect to see a rise in experiences of violence and an increase in the intensity of these threats.

We know Queer and Trans people are resilient. We’ve always been the community we need, we’ve always been there to support and shelter each other, and we will have to do that again for our most vulnerable in the coming days.

I encourage us all to find the community we need, in our hometowns or across the country; in ways this pandemic has already taught us to do. I encourage us all to share with each other the resources we have in our reach - here are just a few:

https://tgrcnm.org/groups (TGRCNM support groups info)
http://eqnm.org/sageabq (SAGE ABE info)
https://fb.me/e/2SRucgMdq (UNM LGBTQRC event)

We cannot ignore the fact that violence and threats have been part of the LGBTQ experience throughout history. We won’t pretend it doesnt impact Queer and Trans people of color especially. We will certainly not repeat the idea that it’s as simple as “call 911,” because it hasn’t been that simple, for LGBTQ people of color, for women of color, for Black and Indigenous people who experience violence, for those who experience domestic violence, and for leaders in our movements for bodily autonomy and for liberation. It’s not always that simple.
But we do know what we have always known, that we can be resilient in large part because we can be there for each other. I have no doubt that this moment of political division, of hatred and violence, of voter intimidation and of fear for our future, we will come together again. We will continue to be the best safety net we have, because we have always known how.

Don't forget to vote, be ready to engage in our fight to reform a system that hasn’t always protected us, and be there for each other.

Disappointed in Adrian Carver's use of racism, classism, and hypocrisy in his attack ad against Adrian Barboa, a queer single mom of color. Please consider finding a new ED who understands intersectionality and the need for solidarity, even when ambition is at hand.
You are invited-> https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4257168 **Anne Frank Remembrance Day with Deborah Lipstadt, Sunday August 4, 2019 3 pm** The Santa Fe Distinguished Lecture Series and the Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival are sponsoring this Anne Frank Remembrance Day on Sunday, August 4, the 75 anniversary of the arrest and deportation of Anne Frank and her family. In a special event for New Mexico, Deborah Lipstadt will speak on Antisemitism: Here and Now on August 4 in Santa Fe at the James A. Little Theater at 3 pm. There will be a VIP reception for her after the talk. Her new book on Antisemitism, published earlier this year, sold out immediately and went into a second printing on the second week after its release. In addition to the American edition, it is now being published in England, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Israel. Lipstadt came to national attention in 2016 with the movie Denial in which she was played by Rachel Weisz, a movie about her international court case with David Irving, a Holocaust denier in England. Lipstadt had long fought Holocaust deniers, and in this court case she was able to prove the falsehoods of those who denied it happened. After a successful in in theaters, Denial can now be seen on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and other streaming services. Her TED talk abut the trial has received 1.2 million views. Prof. Deborah Lipstadt has held the Presidential appointment to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and represented President George W. Bush at the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. She is the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University. Her books include The Eichmann Trial, Denial: Holocaust History on Trial (a National Jewish Book Award-winner), Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory, and Beyond Belief: The American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust, 1933-1945. Public officials will help us in this program "United Against Antisemitism", an initiative of the Jewish Federation of New Mexico
