Our partners at @elcentrodeigualdadyderechos, a local immigrantsā rights and workersā justice organization, elected officials, and immigrant families impacted by the detention of a loved one speak out at a press conference against the recent uptick of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in Albuquerque and attempts by the federal government to strong-arm local governments into fueling Trumpās deportation machine.
Letās correct the record: Equality New Mexico did not try to kill #HB25 the Pregnant Worker Accommodations Act. EQNM strongly supports efforts to codify protections for workers who are pregnant. We look forward to working with NM State Representative Gail Chasey and Senator Liz Stefanics NM Senate District 39 in Interim Committees to explore ways we can continue EQNMās 27 year history of winning stronger non-discrimination protections for our stateās most marginalized populations.

Moments ago, we led the charge to defeat HJR2, Rep. Gregg Schmedes' effort to weaken New Mexicoās ban on conversion therapy on minors. VICTORY!!!
The ambiguous and broadly worded bill was a thinly-veiled assault on public education and would have led to the weakening of LGBTQ+ young peoplesā protections from conversion therapy, and all youthās ability to access behavioral/mental healthcare, substance abuse counseling, reproductive healthcare, and youth suicide prevention counseling. Most egregiously, this bill would have circumvented our hard fought prohibition on conversion therapy.
We proudly thank the members of the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee who voted to table this bill. Chairwoman Liz Thomson, New Mexico State Representative Angelica Rubio, Andrea Romero.
Roe v. Wade Day at #nmleg 2020
"Because abortion bans are about power and control of our bodies." š
EQNM is proud to be a member of the Respect NM Women coalition because reproductive healthcare, including abortion is HEALTHCARE. Abortion is LGBTQ+ affirming healthcare, and healthcare is not a crime.

The Supreme Court has the opportunity to affirm that all LGBTQ people should be able to work hard and support themselves and their families without fear of harassment or discrimination at work.

Apply now to support EQNM's Endorsement Process
You've probably seen us endorse candidates before, now we need your help. The EQNM Board of Directors endorses candidates for public office who align with our mission, vision, values, and core beliefs ā because electing members of our community and our allies to office is a key part of how we continue to win equality for New Mexicans.
That's where you come in ā we need your help! We are currently accepting applications to join our "blind review" committee. What does this mean? It means that, if you're eligible and selected for the committee, you'll give the Board of Directors feedback on answers submitted to EQNM by candidates. It's called a "blind review" because we won't be revealing the candidate name or the specific race which you're evaluating and identifying information will be redacted from the questions. Apply here: http://bit.ly/2019reviewCommittee
So, how's all this work? You must live in New Mexico and you cannot be a current candidate for local office or be actively working/volunteering for a candidate for local office. You must submit this application, answering the questions so that we can determine your alignment to our organizational values and issue priorities. Other than that, it's pretty easy and the commitment is fairly low! Apply here: http://bit.ly/2019reviewCommittee Here is our timeline:
Applications to serve on the committee are due October 4th at 11:59pm
You will be notified if you've been selected on October 7th.
You will receive a link to the feedback google form on the 7th.
You will be able to review candidates' answers through October 13th.
Feedback google form is due back to the Board of Directors on October 13th at 11:59pm

Please bear with us as we resolve these issues.
Hey Trump, this is what resistance to your bigotry looks like in New Mexico. You canāt (and wonāt) win here.

This also wouldn't have been possible without our partners at the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico and the National Center for Transgender Equality!
Please show these folks some love by sharing this post!

We here, rallying for LGBTQ rights!
Today the Supreme Court issued a narrow ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, and while they sided with the baker who discriminated against a same-sex couple, the ruling pertained to the specifics of this case and did not undermine our nationās core principle that businesses open to the public should be open to all. In fact, it reaffirmed that states can pass laws protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination.

Congresswoman Gwen S. Moore is here for #TeamDeb! Like EQNM and Pat Davis, Rep. Moore has endorsed Deb Haaland for Congress because she knows Deb is the powerful progressive champion and fighter the LGBTQ+ community needs.
EQNM Members: In 2010, Lynda Lovejoy compared being LGBTQ+ with being born with a disability. It's *NOT* ok to shame either one of those groups and we shouldn't send people like her back to elected office.
If you live in the northwest quadrant of the state, you have an important choice to make about the Public Regulation Commission. We encourage you to take a look at Janene Yazzie for NM!
