We are so excited to see our CASA volunteers face to face again!

We did it New Mexico! Today we are officially fully reopened, with all pandemic-related occupancy restrictions lifted and all limitations on mass gatherings gone.

I'm so proud of New Mexico for stepping up, sacrificing, and saving lives. We’re all ready for a safe and fun summer – lord knows New Mexicans have earned it.

If you haven't already, please get your shot – don't risk these dangerous new variants that present incredible risk to those who are unvaccinated. Go to www.vaccineNM.org and help protect yourself and your family.

We are thrilled to announce that we received a grant from @BlueCrossBlueShieldofNewMexico through
their Healthy Kids, Healthy Families initiative! This grant will help fund our Successful Transitions and Adult Readiness (STAR) Program! The STAR Program aims to provide detailed advocacy to youth 12 and older. CASA volunteers work with these youth to help navigate the transitions that arise as the young person approaches aging out of foster care. This grant will help us prepare Youth for adulthood and ensure they are able to navigate the adult world. Thank you, Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico!

“LGBTQ+ youth are at greater risk of experiencing violence, and they are at higher risk of experiencing negative health and life outcomes, such as low graduation rates and mental health issues. With this knowledge, it is imperative that we support youth who identify as LGBTQ+ and make sure they develop in such a way that they are enriched, rather than being so disenfranchised. In child welfare, that starts with the foster care placement process, where we can surround children with supportive relationships and resources.” -Terrence (Terry) Scraggins

Did you know that LGBTQ+ youth are at a significantly greater risk of being placed into the foster system? Further, Foster Club conducted a survey that found 78 percent of LGBTQ+ foster youth moved or ran away from their foster placements because of hostility toward their sexual orientation or gender identity. The same survey found that 100 percent of LGBTQ+ youth living in group homes experienced verbal harassment and 70 percent endured physical violence which leads to increased incidents of homelessness because the youth feel safer on the streets than in the institutions that are meant to protect them.

June is Pride Month, and we are immensely proud of our LGBTQ+ foster youth. We are proud of how far they have come, proud of all the obstacles they have hurdled, proud of who they are, and proud of who they will become.

It's #FeelGoodFriday!

In 2009, a foster provider met the biological mother of children that had come into foster care. The bio mom and foster mom developed a good relationship that helped the treatment plan and placement go smoothly. The mother recovered from addiction quickly and was reunited with her children. Despite the case being closed, a mentorship and friendship continued between the moms. Over the years, the women have raised their children like siblings and supported each other’s careers and volunteer work. The bio mom earned college degrees while working full time, and the former foster mom worked as a teacher and became a CASA. The women even inspired each other to pursue graduate degrees in social work, and began classes at a New Mexico university this semester. The CASA is now an employee of NM Kids Matter, and the bio mom provides vital services to the unhoused.

It’s #FeelGoodFriday! If this story gives you all the feels, share it with your friends!

One of our CASAs recently got to know four siblings all placed in separate homes and advocated for them to all be placed in the same home. The youth were all moved around several times but were never placed together. Through it all, the CASA remained a constant part of their team. The CASA connected the foster providers to APS lunch distribution sites since the beginning of the pandemic, and has promoted group outdoor play to help ease the children’s stress. After a long and bumpy road with lots of advocating on the CASA’s part, we are happy to report that the siblings have been placed into a loving, healthy, and safe home with parents who want to adopt all four of the siblings. The adoption will be finalized this year, and the kids have never been happier.

Happy #FeelGoodFriday! This week's story is short, but it is oh so sweet!

We recently had a Youth change foster homes, and unfortunately many of their belongings were misplaced during the move. Our team and our volunteers jumped into action immediately and we were able to replace their missing items. This is just one example of how amazing our network is every single day!
