CSVANW’s Statement on Joleen Nez, An Unhoused Relative Who Dies in MDC Custody

We are in solidarity with the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women and demand justice and accountability for the death of Joleen Nez. We support their call for:

▪️Transparency from the Albuquerque Police Department and the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center about circumstances that led to Joleen Nez’s death

▪️A full investigation regarding Joleen’s manner of death from MDC and the prosecutor Pilar A. Borneo

▪️APD officers involved be terminated, with cancelation of pension, administrative leave, or any benefits

▪️MDC staff responsible for Joleen’s care be held responsible for her death pending a thorough investigation

▪️Accountability, over-sight and professionalization of APD and MDC personnel who are involved in over-policing practices

▪️Justice for Joleen Nez

CSVANW’s Statement on Joleen Nez, An Unhoused Relative Who Dies in MDC Custody The Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW) learned about the passing of our relative Joleen Nez. Haaland On Protecting Indigenous Women

Today, we join in raising awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. In the U.S., homicide is the third-leading cause of death among Native women ages 10 to 24, according to the Urban Indian Health Institute, and Native women are victims of murder more than 10 times the national average, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Below is an interview with U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland about this epidemic being one of her top priorities.

Healthy Masculinties Collaborative Update

The Healthy Masculinities Collaborative participates in a Transgender Cultural Fluency Training

NMW.O continues to meet with Together for Brothers, Tewa Women United, the Transgender Resource Center, and New Mexico Health Equity Partnership, as part of our Healthy Masculinities Collaborative. Members of the collaborative recently attended a Healthy Masculinity Training Institute hosted by Men Can Stop R**e, where we explored dominant and counter stories of masculinity, reframed masculine strength in the context of vulnerability, and discussed how a range of masculine identities allows for self-identifying men and boys to express themselves fully and fluidly without rigid binary gender roles. The collaborative was also honored to have the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico train us in Transgender Cultural Fluency.

Later this year, the collaborative will work on a healthy masculinities toolkit that will be free and available for community use! Engaging self-identifying men and boys is a key part of our commitment to gender justice. Each time we move into honesty, vulnerability, and healing around masculinity and gender, we move further away from patriarchy.

ICYMI, the APD Union is running a "Crime Matters More" campaign to get out of the reforms mandated by the DOJ (link below). APD has the distinction of being one of the deadliest police forces in the country, mostly killing people who are Indigenous, Brown, Black, poor, unhoused, disabled, and/or living with mental illness or addiction. Our hearts are with the family of #GeorgeFloyd and the millions who have acted in defense of Black lives over the past 11 months. A moment of relief is here for many as the trial is over, yet the conviction of Derek Chauvin doesn’t absolve policing as a whole.

Our communities need and demand more than a guilty verdict delivered through an unjust and racist system. We require real accountability for police and real safety for our communities. We are mobilizing to defund and abolish the police, because this is the only way we will stop police terror and bring about real safety. There is no ‘reforming’ this system—the time is now to divest from deadly policing and invest in a vision of public safety that protects us all.

The pain, poise, anxiety, courage, fear... it's immense what our people are going through. We continue to send our love and support to everyone in the thick of these fights ✊🏼💜

Stories of Survival is seeking submissions for an upcoming short story anthology featuring Latinx Q***r Survivors! In honor of Gloria Anzaldúa, We are looking for stories from the borderlands. “the Borderlands are physically present wherever two or more cultures edge each other, where people of different races occupy the same territory, where under, lower, middle and upper classes touch, where the space between two individuals shrinks with intimacy.” (Anzaldúa, Borderlands, Preface) Emo, punk, grunge, goth, scene, raw, dark, twisted, raunchy, q***r af. These are just some of the themes we are seeking to uplift in this first volume ever published by SOS. Edited and featuring work by Vanessa Cordero, this anthology will be included with tickets to our first 2 day literary conference spring of 2021 “Sobreviviendo a las Fronteras/Surviving the Borderlands”. Once published, this anthology will be available as, “pay what you can”, with ALL proceeds going towards empowering Latinx Q***r Survivors to share their Stories of Survival. Keynote Friday January 29th, 7pm EST, Conference dates January 30th & 31st, times TBD. Last day for submission is January 22nd at 11:59 PM EST! Chosen artists will be announced Friday January 29th to the public, with individuals being notified privately January 24th. All who submit should be available to attend at least one day of the conference. Work must be original and cannot have been published elsewhere. We are seeking 8-10 Latinx authors whose life and identities align with that of Q***r Survival. Chosen authors will be invited to participate in the literary conference, will receive a copy of the completed anthology (PDF), and will receive complimentary access to Stories of Survival content for an entire year! Chosen authors will receive a small monetary gift honoring their time, passion, and energy. We wish we could pay you more, and we hope that this anthology will support authors in getting to the next phase in their writing career! All submissions should be sent to q***[email protected] - please ensure all submissions include a cover letter with contact information, word count, and venmo (so we can pay you if chosen!). We also accept verbal manuscripts, just record yourself telling your story and we will transcribe it if you want!

Person personal ass question. ⚠️Trigger Warning ⚠️ Do we have any silver LGBTQIA+ members who have experienced the AIDS crisis? I wasn't born back then but learned about it and continue to do so now in my adulthood. But on a personal level, You as an Individual going through and being apart of such a tragic and chaotic time...what is Your Story? How did you do it? I understand COVID 19 has never ever happened before. Although AIDS and many other diseases have taken the globe....we can learn as much scientific and logical things about these sicknesses but we never learn about those who experienced it. I would like to hear some stories from people who had to battle something similar. That may sound morbid and odd but damn it!! There are too many feelings for one to hold and being able to have realtabilty and humanity is important as well. So thank you for responding if you do and feel brave enough.
Good evening I would like to reach out to your Navajo Tribal enrolled clients. If they need to complete the Navajo Nation CARES Fund Applications I can help them... please inbox me when you can.
