In November 2020, Tommy was hit by a car in a Las Cruces parking lot. He doesn’t remember the accident, but witnesses say he was flipped into the air and landed head first on the pavement. He was rushed to an El Paso hospital for acute care.

Tommy was admitted into ARCA Neuro in early 2021. After eight months, he says, “Overall, I feel pretty good. Every day is a new day. A new adventure. A new goal. I’m always thinking about bettering myself. And the only way I can do that is with ARCA and thank God for them. Thank God for them.”

“These people here, they’re doing a lot for me. They do care. I think that’s one of the main things. They’re not just here working, they’re here caring for a person.”

After decades working between construction and the oil fields, Tommy recognizes the changes in his body since the accident. He says he feels great when he wakes up, but before long exhaustion takes over. Using a cane helps him feel more secure walking.

Tommy’s brain injury also affected his short-term memory. He’s made progress in identifying his feelings and keeps a journal to supplement memory gaps. He has dreams about the past and the things he used to do and wonders whether he will be able to do them again. He says when he came to ARCA, he was at about 40% and now he’s at about 70%. It hasn’t been easy but he’s dedicated himself to working through the program.

“I appreciate ARCA. They can’t pull me away from here. Them caring for me helps me a lot.”

“Hopefully in the future, I can help [other] people out. To share my story, let people know it’s okay. It’s okay to be sick. The better part is getting better. Talking helps. Just getting it out to let people know how it feels – get a burden off my shoulders.” Tommy tells other survivors, “Don’t worry about if you’re feeling bad, just try to get better. Don’t rush it.”

Senate leadership and the White House report they are receiving the most constituent outreach on the $400 billion for HCBS. Please use the action tool link http://www.votervoice.net/Shares/BV-igAC7ACVQVA0ub0Y7FAA
to ask your Representative to support and fully fund the inclusion of the Better Care Better Jobs Act in the reconciliation package being drafted.

Speaker Pelosi announced the cap for the budget to operationalize the President’s priorities will be $3.5 trillion. While that should include the Better Care Better Jobs Act, which brings to life $400 billion investment in the Medicaid HCBS program which the President asked for, that inclusion is vulnerable as every industry lobbies to be included in the spending. Please tell your Representatives the $400 billion for HCBS proposed in the Better Care Better Jobs Act needs to be included in any budget package that moves forward.

Please take a minute today to advocate for the Better Care Better Jobs Act in this vulnerable time in the budget negotiation process.

Thank you for all you do to support children and adults with IDCD in our community.

STAFF IN THE SPOTLIGHT!

Meet Matt Farber, Greenhouse Grower! He's been at ARCA for 26 years!

Why did you come to ARCA?

I came to ARCA because I wanted a change from working in the food industry. More importantly, I wanted a job that would give me a better personal challenge. My Mom worked as a Physical Therapist for the public school district in Belen, NM and my Dad worked for ARCA as the Intake Social Worker for ICF. I started with ARCA right after high school at age 18 as a Residential Instructor working just weekends. After working for a couple years as a Residential Instructor, I saw an opportunity to become a Vocational Instructor which would provide me with a full time work schedule and give me an opportunity to work outside in a vocational setting. I quickly scooped up that opportunity to work at the La Paloma Greenhouse. During my first 5 years working at the greenhouse, the grower took me under his wing and taught me everything he knew about growing a quality poinsettia crop. After he retired from ARCA, I took over being the head grower for La Paloma greenhouse and never looked back!

What did you do prior to ARCA?

Prior to working for ARCA, I spent a couple years working in the food and restaurant industry. I love to cook but I quickly realized that the food industry was not going to be my chosen path! I also worked for a short period of time on a farm maintaining large acres of alfalfa, taking care of livestock, and maintaining farm equipment.

Why do you stay at ARCA?

I stay with ARCA because when you come to work every day and work with the wonderful individuals that we serve each day, you can make a positive difference in their lives (as well as your own) and you get to see it and experience it regularly! It’s not just a workplace, it’s family! Helping people grow and enhancing the quality of their life and livelihood and being able to learn and grow together is why I love working here at ARCA.

What do you like to do outside of work?

My passion outside of work is spending time going camping, hiking and backpacking. I absolutely love throwing on a 30 lb pack with just the basic necessities and heading out on a trail into the wilderness and spending a few days just enjoying what nature has to offer. It is important to maintain good physical and mental health. Backpacking and hiking gives me the best of both! I enjoy sharing these adventures with people too. As a YouTube content creator, I run my own outdoor adventure channel called “The Southwest Backpacker” and I share many of my backpacking, hiking, camping and canoeing adventures with the world. Outdoor photography/videography is also something that I really enjoy! The desert southwest has to be one of the most picturesque locations on earth and it’s my favorite region for photography. Outdoor cooking is also a passion of mine! I love cooking on a plow disc (disco) or BBQ grill this time of year but during the fall, winter and spring months, it’s all about cast iron cooking… specifically using a Dutch oven!

At ARCA, we measure success by the opportunities created for people we serve, like when little ones in our Foster Care program find a lifetime of opportunity with their forever families.

The moment a forever family is born, whether through reunification or adoption, is magical. However you measure it, this is success.

May is National Foster Care Month, a special time to recognize loving families who welcome children of all abilities and needs into their lives. To learn more about how you can make a difference in the life of a child with special needs, please contact Jennifer Madrid at [email protected].
