Domestic violence affects each person differently, but it impacts a person both physically and psychologically. Many victims try to cover up what is happening to them, but here are a few warning signs you can look out for if you suspect someone you know is being abused.

🔹 Bruises on the arms
🔹 Low self-esteem
🔹 Sprained wrists
🔹 Wearing long sleeves or scarves in the summer
🔹 Extremely apologetic or meek
🔹 Begins to isolate themselves or becoming reserved and distant from close friends and family

If someone you know is experiencing these signs or other forms of domestic violence encourage them to seek the help they need and deserve. Get connected with an advocate here: https://bit.ly/3htGE5Q

COVID 19 Impacts Domestic Violence

It’s Giving Tuesday, a global generosity movement to use the power of people to help their communities. The Domestic Violence Resource Center of NM can certainly use the community’s help as we continue to provide support and services for victims and witnesses of domestic violence. Donations are down due to COVID-19, yet domestic violence is up. Your donations go directly to helping DV victims and their families. Please use the following link if you’d like to donate:

If you know someone who is a victim of domestic violence, make sure to let that person know that there is a way out. There are several legal remedies available to someone who received brutal treatment from a spouse. Seek the help of an attorney to get started.

Why You Should Give to DVRC

The statewide “stay-in-place” order in New Mexico has forced victims to stay in close quarters with their abusers resulting in an increase in severity and brutality of physical harm, rape and sexual assaults. The violence has the effect of silencing victims for fear of having to find shelter and protection while being locked down. DVRC needs your help. The number of victims and the services they need are building up. On-scene assistance from advocates responding to police calls is expected to double; increases for emergency medical help, transportation, shelter, clothing and food has already started; and the need for case management and counseling to heal victims is expected to exceed DVRC capacity unless additional funding can be met. Your contribution will go directly to helping victims of domestic violence giving them safety and guidance. Please give generously to DVRC.

Remember that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. If you know someone who is experiencing violence at home, do not hesitate to call the assistance of the authorities. Report all forms of domestic abuse.

Aside from this, you can also offer your helping hands to the victim of domestic assault. Make yourself available whenever the said person needs a shoulder to cry on or someone to talk to.

General information

Domestic Violence occurs when one person in an intimate relationship exercises power and control over the other through a pattern of intentional behaviors, including psychological, emotional, physical and sexual abuse. There is no way to define a "typical" victim of domestic abuse and violence - it can affect anyone from any socioeconomic, demographic, geographic, or educational background. Most people can recognize an abusive relationship when it involves violence, relationships involving psychological or emotional abuse are more subtle, but no less destructive.
