Editorial: A big step for tiny homes

By Albuquerque Journal Editorial Board

Monday, October 15th, 2018 at 12:05am

Big thanks go out to the Albuquerque Indian Center for stepping up with a smart solution to the dilemma of where to locate a tiny homes village for homeless people. While many have blasted the village idea and made it clear they didn’t want this village in their backyards, AIC is offering a 1.38-acre vacant lot behind its building at 105 Texas SE.

Bernalillo County already has $2 million for the project from a general obligation bond voters approved in 2016. AIC will offer a long-term lease and be contracted to provide management and operations services. Each of the 30 116-square-foot homes will have heating and cooling, minimal furniture, and electricity. (Restrooms, showers, laundry and a kitchen will be in communal buildings.) AIC already offers services key for the village, including around 200 meals Monday through Friday, mail collection for clients, employment assistance, and behavioral health and DWI and substance abuse counseling, according to Executive Director Mary Garcia.

There are still hurdles to overcome – commission approval and a required zone change – but the partnership is off to a good start. While it certainly does not solve the homeless problem in Albuquerque, it is a start to helping get some of the city’s neediest off the streets. Thanks to AIC, its board and everyone else who is stepping up to help people in our city who need a break.

This editorial first appeared in the Albuquerque Journal. It was written by members of the editorial board and is unsigned as it represents the opinion of the newspaper rather than the writers.

The Mission of the Albuquerque Indian Center is to, "Empower the Albuquerque Urban Native American Community and others through the provisions of wrap-around services designed to promote wellness, education, self-sufficiency and tradition." So why don't i see any Native specific cultural events listed? how are you promoting tradition as stated in your mission? it would be nice to see classes on native crafts and the sharing of stories and traditions. we need our culture to heal and be empowered!
