South Valley Pride Day 2020 has been canceled. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has necessitated the cancelation of this year’s event.

“Due to the pandemic, with the New Mexico State Fair, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and other large gatherings being canceled, we have made the decision to cancel South Valley Pride Day 2020 to secure the health and safety of the South Valley community,” says District 2 County Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada. “We hope that South Valley Pride will be back, bigger and better than ever, in the spring of 2021.”

Bernalillo County Fire Department

Great advice for everyone to help keep us all safe over this Fourth of July holiday! Thanks Bernalillo County Fire Department

As we all get ready to celebrate the Fourth of July. We here at Bernalillo County Fire Rescue want to remind you to do so in safe manner.

We understand that with the Covid-19 Pandemic, Social Distancing Practices, and the dryer weather, has led to us to celebrate our independence in a completely different way. This year, the city and the county will be collaborating in a fireworks celebration all across the city. (Tom Tenorio Park, Ladera Golf Course, North Domingo Baca Park, Expo New Mexico). These firework events will start at 9:20pm weather permitting.

We welcome each and every one of you to enjoy the show from the comfort of your own home. For those of you who plan on doing your own fireworks this year, we want to go over a few ways that you can do so safely.

First, never allow young children to handle fireworks.

Older children should use them only under close adult supervision.

Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.

Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands.

Never light them indoors.

Only use them away from people, houses, and flammable material.

Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.

Never ignite devices in a container.

Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.

Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.

Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in the event you have a fire.

Never use illegal fireworks

Thank you for helping us reduce the chance of an accidental injury or an unintended fire from starting. We hope you have a fun and happy Fourth of July!

Bernalillo County Animal Care Services advises citizens to bring animals indoors during fireworks displays. During the Fourth of July holiday, more companion animals, especially dogs, are picked up by Bernalillo County and City of Albuquerque animal care officers than at any other time of the year. Animals frightened or confused by the fireworks may run away or even jump fences to try to escape the noise.
