Lucky Paws: a storefront operation in a shelter business. In 2006, Albuquerque’s HEART Ordinance made it illegal for pet stores to sell dogs and cats that were not sheltered or rescued animals within city limits. This forward-thinking effort put a serious dent in the puppy and kitten mill businesses in the area, and left a void in commercial venues where people could view animals available as pets. To fill this newly found void, the City’s Animal Welfare Department opened Lucky Paws, a retail store in Coronado Mall where only Animal Welfare shelter animals can be displayed for adoption. Lucky Paws has been an incredibly successful venture and has contributed to an increase in the public’s opinion of what a shelter pet looks like. Since Lucky Paws opened 10 years ago, 22,000 have found homes through the adoption center. Lucky Paws is supported by a 501c3 registered charity, Friends of Lucky Paws, that assists with funding services and purchasing items needed to operate the store. You can learn more about our charity, or donate to help fund our efforts, here: http://www.saveluckypaws.org/Save_Lucky_Paws/Friends_of_Lucky_Paws.html Help Us Spread the Word! • Encourage potential pet adopters to go to Lucky Paws. • Do not patronize backyard breeders or puppy mills. Adopt or buy pets from reputable breeders with valid permits. • Spay or neuter your animals. All Lucky Paws pets are spayed or neutered, immunized, microchipped, licensed, and ready to go to their new, loving, forever homes. All new pet parents must meet the City of Albuquerque qualified adopter requirements. Who is a qualified adopter? • Must be at least 18 years old • Has never been convicted of any form of animal cruelty under any law • Has never been convicted two or more times for any violation of the HEART Ordinance or any preceding animal ordinance • Has never had any animal related permit revoked or suspended • Has never failed to reclaim an animal from Animal Welfare • Has not surrendered an animal within one year at the time of adoption • Has never been convicted of child or domestic abuse. Parking We suggest parking on the southwest side of Boot Barn at Coronado Mall. New pet adopters are not allowed to show off their new friends by walking through the mall. Leaving the mall with your pet is only allowed through the foyer at the south end of the Boot Barn entrance.

Mission: To serve as tireless champions for the animals of Albuquerque by providing them the finest care available along with hands-on assistance in finding happy homes.

We miss all the pet lovers that frequently come into Lucky Paws. We especially appreciate those who end up taking home one of our pet residents. This was the wonderful outcome for a special cat named Olli (aka Mini Ryu), to the volunteers and staff who loved him. He has neurological issues that cause him to have an endearing twitch to his movement. Olli's new mom said that he is a chatterbox, and is very vocal with lots of information, as he goes about his business. He enjoys his independence and likes to climb to high places, even when it seems too high. We are beyond happy for Olli's happy ending story and Thank his new family for giving him a wonderful forever home.

Adoption Update from Lucky Paws! A Sunday silver lining to make your day : Dannie, formally knows as Rockstar was a dog that came to the shelter with an injured leg. Her leg was eventually amputated by our vet staff, and it took her some time to adjust, but she is over that hurdle and enjoying life with her new family. Her mom said that she is very well, behaved, as sweet as can be, quite the talker and she does not even seem to know that she is missing a leg.

it's important to know that just because a dog only has one leg, it doesn't mean they can't live a long and happy life. In fact, many dogs thrive and live life to the fullest regardless of their missing limb, showing a resilience and enthusiasm for life that's impossible not to admire.

Volunteer week is upon us and we would like to take a moment to say how much we appreciate and admire the volunteers, who continue to help us take care of our shelter pets. Even during this time of uncertainty, they still show up happily, and ready to walk dogs, and spend time with the cats.

Pictured here are just a few of the volunteers, but there are many others, and their dedication and efforts do not go unnoticed.

Thank you Crystal Torres, for your color and creativity, to go above and beyond, to let our volunteers know how much we appreciate them. 🐾🐾

As we continue to help out at the shelters, it is inevitable that we will meet and fall in love with the sweetest pups, and we came across this sweetheart of a dog.

Do you need a shadow? Or a sidekick? Or maybe an assistant while you are working from home? Guerra (A1784843) might be the dog for you. She is a curl-up-by-your-feet-and-keep-you-company type of girl. Loyal as can be, Guerra would be a great companion and will love you to pieces, if you let her. She is very shy and hopes to be your one and only doggie mate. If you would like to meet Guerra, please set up an appointment by going to our website at www.cabq.gov/pets #ADOPT #Awdshelterpets

Once upon a time there were two peas in a pod, Mutley and Moose, (formerly known as Gordita and Chalupa), waiting for the right home to welcome both of them into. That family walked in our doors, and now these two have it made and live a life of happiness and love. We enjoyed hearing the stories from their mom about how spoiled they are, and how much fun and smiles they have brought to this family's lives. Thank you so much to this amazing family for taking a chance on not just one, but two special dogs. 🐾🐾 #ADOPT #Awdshelterpets

The essential workers that are taking care of the pets and finding homes for them at both of our shelter facilities had a wonderful surprise today.....one of our eastside shelter co-workers was hard at work, making these colorful masks to keep us safe and protected. Thank you so much Tanna 'Eastman' Bennett for taking care of us, we miss you too, and we appreciate all the work and love that you put into making sure that we stay safe.

During this time that we are all doing everything we can do stay safe and healthy, it is also quality time to reflect on spending with family and those we live with. Surely, our fur babies are enjoying the extra time that we are able to spend with them, and are finding ways to insert themselves in everyday tasks.

Our Lucky Paws staff, while still helping out at the shelters, we have been able to spend more time with our own pets and they seem to be very aware of that, here is the PROOF!

Share with us your own personal photos of how you are bonding at home with your fur babies. It is likely to be entertaining and will make anyone smile 🙂

EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about Monsieur's journey with us!

He was originally known as Bubbas and was living at the Westside shelter. One day he came to visit us at lucky Paws, he took a job for the day sitting outside greeting people. The staff fell in love with his easy going and sweet personality, and eventually he made it over to Lucky Paws on the path to find a home.

The lovely couple who were won over by this sweet boy had this to say about him: "He loves to sleep and cuddle! He’s always by our side and we can’t even go to the bathroom without him! 😂 He loves to play with dogs and he loves to drive in the car. He loves treats more than anything and we love him more than he could ever imagine!
Thank you guys❤️❤️"

NO‼️THANK YOU‼️ for giving this wonderful pup the home he very much deserves. We knew he was going to be a great addition to a loving home. #ADOPT #Awdshelterpets

Thank you again to all the public who is bearing with us thru this difficult time as we maneuver our way thru adoption appointments. We appreciate the continued support that our animal community continues to give us by setting up appointments to come in and adopt and foster our pets.

Bagheera (A1814657) knows how to practice social distancing behind a protective panel and he is waiting at the Eastside animal shelter, hoping that the next scheduled adoption appointment might be for him. If you would like to set up a time to meet Bagheera or any of our other awesome pets, visit our website at www.cabq.gov/pets #Adopt #Awdshelterpets

Hello Facebook family, we hope you all are staying safe and enjoying time home with your family and four legged fur babies.

We wanted to put a smile on your face and share some happy news with you about a dog named Milo who found his happy home. Milo's owner had this to say about him: "Milo is a very happy dog, he loves going for walks and runs. He is a very friendly dog and very obedient too. He is smart, he listens and learns quickly. He fits right into our family and I would not trade him for any other dog." It sounds like Milo has managed to steal his owner's heart and we wish him the very best in his new forever home. Thank you to Milo's humans for the wonderful update. #ADOPT #Awdshelterpets

We just want to thank the amazing Albuquerque and New Mexico community for stepping up to help our shelter pets. Last Monday we had 559 pets in care, this morning we had 338 pets in care. That's 221 pets in a home rather than being in the shelter in just seven days.

We are still adopting and placing pets in foster. With our recent operational changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic we have changed how adoptions and fosters are happening. Please be patient as we work through the scheduled appointments and the over 200 individuals who want to step up and foster.

Our Lucky Paws and PetSmart EAC locations are currently closed however all of our team members from those locations have been diligently and tirelessly working at our Eastside and Westside shelters to help get pets into homes. Last week was a crazy week! They have been helping with adoption, pet counseling and scheduling, helping out our foster program with getting pets into homes, helping our kennel team clean and lots more.

We are so grateful to have each and everyone of them part of our AWD team! You all rock!!!

Good Morning Lucky Paws family! We wanted to share with you a heartwarming update about a sweet dog named Arrow. He is now living in a loving happy home, living his best life. He is a running companion to his mom, and a cuddle bug with his doggie companions, and the kids. He is described by his mom as a very mellow and well mannered dog. Arrow was thrilled to finally belong to a family, and the deal was sealed when he got his own collar with his name tag on it! We are so thrilled and grateful that this wonderful family came along, Thank you for giving Arrow the loving home he deserves 💜💜💜

Mayor Tim Keller

Mayor Keller Declares Local State of Emergency to Tap Into Funds for Recovery and Response (See personal message from Mayor Keller below)

UPDATE: Directing resources to response and recovery, allows City to tap into State and Federal Funding

Today, Mayor Tim Keller declared a local public health emergency (video available on YouTube and downloadable on Dropbox) due to the novel coronavirus COVID-19, joining dozens of states and local governments, including the City of Rio Rancho, that are dedicating additional resources to an outbreak the World Health Organization has formally designated as a global pandemic.
The emergency declaration (attached) allows the City to direct funds for the coronavirus response and request additional resources from the state and federal government.
“We are continuing to take action to slow the spread of the coronavirus and help the most vulnerable folks in our community,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Like many mayors across the nation, declaring this public health emergency declaration gives us the tools to allocate resources to immediate needs and tap into additional funds for recovery and response.”

This declaration does not:
• Limit the sale or transfer of firearms
• Prohibit the sale of liquor
• Close streets
• Declare a curfew

Yesterday, Mayor Keller convened a series of virtual meetings with public safety officials, business leaders and the Volunteers Advisory Board to discuss the state of the public health emergency in Albuquerque. He did emphasize that while there are many blessings that come with being the largest metropolitan area in roughly 1,000 square miles, it also means that we have by far the most connectivity and density in the region through our shopping malls, airport, hospitals and other large facilities. Thus, going forward the City may have to have stronger restrictions than the rest of the state, and other New Mexico cities, in the near future.

The best way to slow the spread of COVID-19 is to practice proactive social distancing. It is crucial that the public avoid large gatherings, order food from restaurants to-go, work from home and stay home in general if at all possible. The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the flu, with fever, coughing, and trouble breathing. The City is urging those who believe they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 to call the New Mexico Department of Health at 855-600-3453.

The latest information on City facilities, programs and events will be continuously updated here: https://www.cabq.gov/news/coronavirus-impacts-on-city-services.
Yesterday, Mayor Keller signed the public health emergency powers provisions, O-20-4, which was passed at Monday’s City Council meeting. Previous to passage, the Mayor already had general emergency powers that can be used in this, or other general emergency situations, for a 48 hour period. This new provision only provides specifically for “public health” situations.

we adopted these 2 from you about 5 years ago. You would think they where from the same liter they are inseparable
I adopted Blackie [A1008824] from Lucky Paws on Jan 20; he started out at the shelter on Jan 14 then went to LP on Sunday. The folks at LP are very kind and had taken him to the back so he wouldn't get too stressed as it got very busy. The folks at LP are awesome as are the folks at the Eastside clinic His teeth are bright and shiny now thanks to Dr. Stutzman-Rodriguez, and he's walking much better after Nicole worked on his nail. He is a very sweet old guy [13] who can't hear so follows me everywhere [😊] while he gets acclimated to his new surroundings. He likes my orange cat who has yet to admit she thinks he's alright . Liberty isn't too sure at all. 🙀 He did great at the groomer's and has such a pretty, shiny coat 😎 plus he met his new veterinarian who will be taking care of a couple things a little later. Fun fact I learned on the first day - he likes the car, and he started out in the back seat on our way to the clinic for his nail, but when I got out to get him, he was gone.....he'd instantly claimed the driver's seat and has done it every time we go somewhere. Well, I have a little harness now so I can hook him to the seatbelt for safety 😉. So glad I adopted him!!! Thank you for giving him a chance 🥰
This is Buckeye's (formerly Charlie) 2nd Christmas with us and he learned real quick which stocking is his and when something has been put in it. 🎄🎁🎄🎁🎄

This is our 1st christmas with Winston, thankyou Lucky Paws he is quite the character 😉🐾🐾
Cutest, sweetest kitty living in our business stone yard. She just showed up and has been here for months. We would love to find her a forever home. She is not ferrel. Definitely a pet. Has a clipped ear. Please contact Aleena at Rocky Mountain Stone Mon-Fri 8-5 if interested..... 505-345-8518. This Kitty is a 'lover' 🥰 Let's get her out of the cold in time for Christmas!!
Just wanted to show an update of my baby!! Rolling up on almost 4 months since adpoting Buddy from Lucky Paws! I couldn't ask for a better personality from this handsome guy! So happy to have him! He's quite the ladies man and adored by all friends & family! He had a great time frolicking in the snow for a bit Thanksgiving morning then snoozed like a baby afterward by the heater. For whatever reasons needing to surrender this handsome guy, just knw he will always be loved here & will forever be in good hands! ❤🐶 #AintNuthnButAHoundog #MyBuddy #HappyGotUDay #8yrsYoung #LuckyPaws
Ms. Sally and Mr. Franklin are settling in quite well as new siblings!
The bigger dog is Drogo- whom we have adopted from Lucky Paws- and his best friend Khaleesi is the brindle. He plays so gentle with her.
