In 2006, Albuquerque’s HEART Ordinance made it illegal for pet stores to sell dogs and cats that were not sheltered or rescued animals within city limits. This forward-thinking effort put a serious dent in the puppy and kitten mill businesses in the area, and left a void in commercial venues where people could view animals available as pets. To fill this newly found void, the City’s Animal Welfare
Department opened Lucky Paws, a retail store in Coronado Mall where only Animal Welfare shelter animals can be displayed for adoption. Lucky Paws has been an incredibly successful venture and has contributed to an increase in the public’s opinion of what a shelter pet looks like. Since Lucky Paws opened 10 years ago, 22,000 have found homes through the adoption center. Lucky Paws is supported by a 501c3 registered charity, Friends of Lucky Paws, that assists with funding services and purchasing items needed to operate the store. Help Us Spread the Word!
• Encourage potential pet adopters to go to Lucky Paws.
• Do not patronize backyard breeders or puppy mills. Adopt or buy pets from reputable breeders with valid permits.
• Spay or neuter your animals. All Lucky Paws pets are spayed or neutered, immunized, microchipped, licensed, and ready to go to their new, loving, forever homes. All new pet parents must meet the City of Albuquerque qualified adopter requirements. Who is a qualified adopter?
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Has never been convicted of any form of animal cruelty under any law
• Has never been convicted two or more times for any violation of the HEART Ordinance or any preceding animal ordinance
• Has never had any animal related permit revoked or suspended
• Has never failed to reclaim an animal from Animal Welfare
• Has not surrendered an animal within one year at the time of adoption
• Has never been convicted of child or domestic abuse. Parking
We suggest parking on the southwest side of Boot Barn at Coronado Mall. New pet adopters are not allowed to show off their new friends by walking through the mall. Leaving the mall with your pet is only allowed through the foyer at the south end of the Boot Barn entrance.

Hey there Lucky Paws peeps it’s me Mia! Just hanging out enjoying some fun in the sun on my morning walk! I’ve been in the care of animal welfare and Lucky Paws since April and although it’s been fun I’d really like to have a family of my own. Even though we’ve been closed the past few days doesn’t mean our dogs are not having a good time, here’s what Brinda has been up to with her special volunteer:
Miss Brinda gets in a car and rides well. She went to pet smart and was fine. She knows sit and she knows how to play Fetch. She did well meeting my dog Walks on a leash and doesn’t mind letting you be silly with her. Does well playing off leash. Today we also discovered she likes to play with water. Super sweet girl.

Buck is a loving handsome boy who is currently residing here at Lucky Paws. Buck is shy at first, but once he opens up, he shows you his adorable smile. Buck is not only one smart pup, he is also super outgoing with other dogs.
And for the 🏆 BEST pawformance in Silent Films, the Oscar goes to.... Daisy! At 8 years old, Daisy is still charming and winning hearts with her playful and affectionate personality.

There is a very special girl here at Lucky Paws celebrating her Birthday today. Her name is Rosie she is a year old and has a heart of gold just like her crown. Rosie is deaf, she can hear some pitches but she needs a home with plenty of love and patience. She has high energy, is very playful and gets along lovely with other dogs. Rosie's birthday wish is to get adopted but for now she will save the memory of today, celebrating with those who love her with a slice of doggie Birthday cake.

Did you miss us?? We missed you too! Lucky Paws is back! We had a great opening week for our Valentine holiday, the " My Forever Love Campaign" adoption event. It was a success!! And in true Lucky Paws fashion we found many homes for our shelter pets and had fun doing it! It does not stop at Valentines Day though, the love keeps on going. Our doors will remain open helping our furry friends find their furever homes.

At this time, Lucky Paws is temporarily closed due to the pandemic. We will definitely not be open on 4th of July, as neither will our two other locations, the Eastside and Westside shelters. However, PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center located at 350 Eubank Blvd NE will be open to the public by appointments only from: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
We would like to remind you, July 4th is a wonderful day to celebrate with family and friends, but for animals it is a fearful, stressful and dangerous time. The fireworks often drive pets to act out of character, especially if left outside and unattended. They run away, jump over fences, and leap through screens and windows out of fear.
Animal Welfare is encouraging pet owners to protect their pets from potential harm by taking these simple precautions during the Fourth of July festivities.
Should your pet get lost and end up at either shelter, Animal Welfare wants to expedite the process. If your pet is already spayed or neutered, he or she will be returned to you free of charge. All you have to do is pick up your pet at the shelter.

Just a little update for everyone who is wondering when we are going to open back up. Due to limited staffing in city facilities, we will not be opening Lucky Paws on June 1st. We will continue to do adoptions by appointment at our other locations, the Eastside shelter, the Westside shelter, and the Everyday Adoption Center, located inside Petsmart at 350 Eubank NE. We miss all the pet lovers that frequently come into Lucky Paws. We especially appreciate those who end up taking home one of our pet residents. This was the wonderful outcome for a special cat named Olli (aka Mini Ryu), to the volunteers and staff who loved him. He has neurological issues that cause him to have an endearing twitch to his movement. Olli's new mom said that he is a chatterbox, and is very vocal with lots of information, as he goes about his business. He enjoys his independence and likes to climb to high places, even when it seems too high. We are beyond happy for Olli's happy ending story and Thank his new family for giving him a wonderful forever home.

Kitten season is soon sneaking up on us. Crystal and Carolyn have their arms full with the latest batch of kittens coming into the shelter and soon heading out to foster homes. Sandra made Sake her office buddy for the day and he decided to show off a little. Adoption Update from Lucky Paws! A Sunday silver lining to make your day : Dannie, formally knows as Rockstar was a dog that came to the shelter with an injured leg. Her leg was eventually amputated by our vet staff, and it took her some time to adjust, but she is over that hurdle and enjoying life with her new family. Her mom said that she is very well, behaved, as sweet as can be, quite the talker and she does not even seem to know that she is missing a leg.
it's important to know that just because a dog only has one leg, it doesn't mean they can't live a long and happy life. In fact, many dogs thrive and live life to the fullest regardless of their missing limb, showing a resilience and enthusiasm for life that's impossible not to admire.

Volunteer week is upon us and we would like to take a moment to say how much we appreciate and admire the volunteers, who continue to help us take care of our shelter pets. Even during this time of uncertainty, they still show up happily, and ready to walk dogs, and spend time with the cats.

As we continue to help out at the shelters, it is inevitable that we will meet and fall in love with the sweetest pups, and we came across this sweetheart of a dog.

She is a curl-up-by-your-feet-and-keep-you-company type of girl. Loyal as can be, Guerra would be a great companion and will love you to pieces, if you let her. Once upon a time there were two peas in a pod, Mutley and Moose, (formerly known as Gordita and Chalupa), waiting for the right home to welcome both of them into. That family walked in our doors, and now these two have it made and live a life of happiness and love. We enjoyed hearing the stories from their mom about how spoiled they are, and how much fun and smiles they have brought to this family's lives. Thank you so much to this amazing family for taking a chance on not just one, but two special dogs. 🐾🐾
The essential workers that are taking care of the pets and finding homes for them at both of our shelter facilities had a wonderful surprise today.....one of our eastside shelter co-workers was hard at work, making these colorful masks to keep us safe and protected. Thank you so much Tanna 'Eastman' Bennett for taking care of us, we miss you too, and we appreciate all the work and love that you put into making sure that we stay safe.
During this time that we are all doing everything we can do stay safe and healthy, it is also quality time to reflect on spending with family and those we live with. Surely, our fur babies are enjoying the extra time that we are able to spend with them, and are finding ways to insert themselves in everyday tasks.
Our Lucky Paws staff, while still helping out at the shelters, we have been able to spend more time with our own pets and they seem to be very aware of that, here is the PROOF!

He was originally known as Bubbas and was living at the Westside shelter. One day he came to visit us at lucky Paws, he took a job for the day sitting outside greeting people. The staff fell in love with his easy going and sweet personality, and eventually he made it over to Lucky Paws on the path to find a home.
The lovely couple who were won over by this sweet boy had this to say about him: "He loves to sleep and cuddle! He’s always by our side and we can’t even go to the bathroom without him! 😂 He loves to play with dogs and he loves to drive in the car. He loves treats more than anything and we love him more than he could ever imagine!
