IMPORTANT DATES AND DEADLINES:
On January 4th, the national NHD office announced that the 2022 contest will be virtual. After consultations with teachers and regional coordinators, the tough decision was made for the New Mexico state contest to also be virtual so that students could prepare “like for like” and work out any technical issues with their projects.
The Southern Regional Contest, originally planned for February 19th, will also be virtual. Registration is open at www.NM-SNMRC.NHD.org, and the deadline for that contest is February 16th. Judging will be completed by February 27th. If you are interested in judging, please contact Heather McClenahan at the email below.
For the state contest, registration information, including sign-ups for judges, will open at the end of February. The contest will run from March 25th through April 8th, with a virtual awards ceremony on Sunday, April 10th at 2pm. Students and teachers with questions should contact their regional coordinator:
Northern: Erin Gockel, [email protected]
Central: Stephanie Wilson, [email protected]
Southern: Victor Oaxaca, [email protected]
For judging questions, to sponsor the contest or a special award, or to volunteer, please contact state coordinator Heather McClenahan at [email protected].

2020 was defined by COVID-19, a global pandemic that has often been compared to the 1918 ‘Spanish’ Flu. In the summer of 2020, as part of the Manitos Community Memory Project, focused on building a community based archive, we decided to collect stories about the 1918 ‘Spanish’ Flu epidemic and COVID-19.
Deluxe package of cuadernos includes a boxed set of four issues with stickers and a bookmark with prompts for reflection. One cuaderno is intentionally left blank so you can include reflections about the pandemic you just experienced. You can fill it with art or words that express your experience during the pandemic.
Prompts include:
- How did COVID-19 impact your home? What do you do? Your family?
- What kinds of feelings did you have during the pandemic?
- What are your go-to remedies when you're not feeling well?
Please fill out the form found in the tiny url link above to express interest in requesting cuadernos so we know how many to print. We will give first priority to classroom teachers and librarians.
These cuadernos were created by Natasha Vasquez and Lily Padilla, students at the NMHU Media Arts program. Both Natasha and Lily will be available to conduct classroom programs to discuss how they approached interpreting the archival research and creating these cuadernos.
