Red Flag Warning
A term used by fire-weather forecasters to call attention to limited weather conditions of particular importance that may result in extreme burning conditions. It is issued when it is an on-going event or the fire weather forecaster has a high degree of confidence that Red Flag criteria will occur within 24 hours of issuance. Red Flag criteria occurs whenever a geographical area has been in a dry spell for a week or two, or for a shorter period , if before spring green-up or after fall color, and the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) is high to extreme and the following forecast weather parameters are forecasted to be met:
1) a sustained wind average 15 mph or greater
2) relative humidity less than or equal to 25 percent and
3) a temperature of greater than 75 degrees F.
In some states, dry lightning and unstable air are criteria. A Fire Weather Watch may be issued prior to the Red Flag Warning

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM MDT THIS EVENING...
**ZONES 102, 105, 106 AND 107**

An extremely dangerous Red Flag event continues today as strong to damaging winds persist through late afternoon. Poor humidity recovery occurred last night and early this morning with humidity
values expected to plummet to 5 to 10 percent in most of northern and central New Mexico again this afternoon. Above normal temperatures will also persist into the middle of the week along with high Haines indices that will yield very unstable conditions leading to rapid and potentially catastrophic fire spread and growth. Winds will decrease
this evening, but gusty winds will redevelop over the eastern half of New Mexico Tuesday, leading to another round of critical fire weather conditions. Low level moisture is expected to return to the eastern plains of New Mexico Tuesday night, leading to scattered thunderstorms there into Wednesday. Meanwhile, western and central New Mexico will continue to suffer from dry conditions and low
humidity while winds increase in speed area wide.

05/07/2022

To reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during extended periods of high to extreme fire danger coupled with severe to exceptional drought, and very dry conditions. The Southern Pueblos Agency (SPA), in consideration with Cibola National Forest and other Federal Agencies, is initiating Stage II Fire Restrictions.

Based on the above, we will initiate Stage II Fire restrictions beginning May 4, 2022. Stage II intensifies the restrictions from Stage I by focusing on activities that, although normally managed under permit or contract, have a relatively high risk of causing a fire start.

Several criteria are used to determine when to implement fire restrictions, including fire activity levels, current and predicted weather, fuel moisture, and the availability of firefighting resources. Fire restriction criteria are routinely evaluated, and restrictions could be upgraded or downgraded at any time.

In order to protect life and natural resources during this exceptional drought conditions for the Pueblos, as well as reduce the risk for a human caused fire, it may be necessary to close portions of the reservation if conditions do not improve. Closures may include the Mountain Ranges and the Bosque/Riparian corridors. Access would be limited to permittees, federal and tribal employees on official business only.

As conditions persist, we can anticipate increasing to Stage III Restrictions - total closures. Thank you for your cooperation. If there are any questions, please contact Anthony J. Thompson Jr, Fire Management Officer at 505-563-3662.

05/07/2022

The combination of increased and prolonged drought, well above normal temperatures, an exceptionally dry and unstable atmosphere
and strong winds will keep critical fire weather conditions going through at least the middle of next week. Widespread fire conditions
are forecast today, Sunday and Monday, with coverage mostly in the east Tuesday, then west and central areas Wednesday. No needed
moisture is in sight through Tuesday. Low level moisture could seep into the East Central and Northeast Plains Tuesday night into Wednesday night, with the potential for strong to severe
thunderstorms. It dries out again for later next week with more fire weather concerns in the east Thursday and Friday.

Damaging Winds and Extreme Fire Weather Event Friday April 22, 2022
IMPACTS:
South southwest wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph will be capable of producing damage to roof tops, trees, utility poles and other vulnerable structures.
Strong cross winds, especially on northwest to southeast oriented roads, will create dangerous driving conditions with the potential for high profile vehicles to topple.
Very dry conditions and low humidity between 5 to 10% will combine with the severe winds to create an extreme fire weather scenario with catastrophic fire growth possible

Hello! I’m doing research into mental wellbeing and factors related to su***de of wildland firefighters, and I could use your help. Wildland firefighters are almost completely unstudied when it comes to su***de, risk factors, and other mental health concerns. The research that I am doing is an important first step in understanding why wildland firefighters die by su***de, as well as what other difficulties they may be facing.

While there is no direct compensation for participating in this study, your participation would provide valuable data for our study. Anyone who currently is, or ever was, a wildland firefighter is welcome to participate in this project. All of your answers are kept completely confidential and will not be shared with anyone in your family, workplace, or your personal doctor. We will not be attaching your answers to your personal identity in any way. This research has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Oklahoma State University.

If you’re interested in participating, have questions about eligibility, or would like to know more, please send me a direct message on here or an email at [email protected]. Thank you for taking the time to read this!
