Today marks the first day of Latinx Heritage Month. According to the National Latinx Network, about 1 in 3 Latinas will experience intimate partner violence in her lifetime, and 1 in 12 Latinas have experienced intimate partner violence in the past 12 months. While this number is similar to the rate of white individuals facing abuse, Latinx survivors can face barriers to getting support. Check out this article to learn more: http://ow.ly/oBPA50KKgFB

Victim-blaming isolates victim/survivors and makes it harder for them to come forward. Examples of victim-blaming include:
▪️Making excuses for the abuser ("They were drunk")
▪️Blaming the survivor for the abuse because of something they did (or didn’t do) or said (or didn’t say)
▪️Saying the victim is making up the abuse to get attention
The best thing to do when a survivor shares their story with you is to listen and believe them.
If you have any questions or concerns about your relationship, give us a call at 1-800-373-1043.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 71% of pet owners entering domestic violence shelters report that their abuser had threatened, injured, or killed family pets. This is why DVIP has a safe pet program that includes fostering, emergency vet services, and Cooper's House, the kennel area in our shelter.

Way to go New Mexico Highlands University!
I would like to offer six scholarships to any member of the NMHU community to take the online basic course in Animal Care and Control (ACO) from the National Animal Control and Care Association (NACA). The class is valued at $447 but will be offered free to the first six people who indicate an interest. This offer is open to students, faculty, and staff at the Las Vegas campus and all the Centers.
The course is offered asynchronously and provides basic training for anyone who is interested in expanding their skills in caring for animals. At the end of the online course, participants will receive National Animal Control Officer certification from NACA. You can read more about NACA and the course here: https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/ready-to-grow-in-your-career/
It’s no secret that animal control is an ongoing challenge in Las Vegas and other communities in New Mexico, and although this course cannot address all aspects of the challenge, NMHU wants to provide resources to anyone who would like to add animal control training to their skillset, whether it’s for the eventual goal of becoming an animal control officer, whether it might benefit animal-related volunteer work, or whether it might provide a boost to your resume.
Mayor Louie Trujillo has commended New Mexico Highlands University for their initiative in offering this certification to members of the NMHU community because it brings attention to a critical issue in Las Vegas and provides a possible avenue for helping the city. As Mayor Trujillo says, “It shows great partnership between the university and the City of Las Vegas.”
If you are interested in receiving one of the six scholarships to the course, please contact Maria at [email protected]. The scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Monday Positive Links, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing all forms of family violence, spoke in front of state lawmakers along with other organizations
Positive Links will be presenting at a New Mexico State Legislature Interim Hearing on Monday. Along with Animal Protection Voters, we will be speaking about the link between animal abuse and human violence and the work we do to reduce all forms of family violence including domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse and animal abuse.
We'll be asking legislators to support legislation to prohibit be******ty in NM. Be******ty is harmful to animals and is also significantly connected to harm to children and adults. NM is one of only 2 states where be******ty isn't illegal and we need to change that!
