What's Blooming? Wednesdays

Meet the Canna lily: Are these beautiful golden yellow flowers around the Botanic Garden right now a type of orchid, or perhaps a lily? Technically, it’s neither!

Although commonly called a canna lily, the 10 species in the genus Canna are not true lilies (genus Lilium). The nickname likely caught on due to the similarity in appearance. These vibrant flowering plants are native to the American tropics, including all of South America, but have been easily cultivated in temperate climates in other parts of the world, even becoming naturalized in Europe, India, and Africa in the 1860s. The most common colors are warm shades ranging from reds and pinks to oranges and yellows, or any combination of those. No matter where you place them, the canna lily adds height and striking color to your landscape design! Visit the Garden's page to read more about how to grow your own! https://bit.ly/3MFbGpe

For more than two decades, the Aquatic Conservation Facility (ACF) at the ABQ BioPark has been been on the front lines of efforts to preserve one of the most endangered freshwater fish in North America: the Rio Grande silvery minnow. To date, over 1 million of these native fish have been hatched and released back into the wild.

This spring, climate change extremes added an additional threat to populations when drought left fish isolated in evaporating pools as the heat rose. A collaborative rescue effort of stranded fish resulted in an exciting surprise! Now safe under expert human care, the fish spawned and around 124,000 eggs were shared between the ACF and another conservation facility in Dexter, NM. Soon after, another 46,000 eggs were collected from the wild thanks to clever strategies from biologists, joining the 60,000 young silvery minnows that hatched from the rescued fish. There's a new face in Asia! Elok (pronounced EL-ick) is a 24 year old male Sumatran orangutan who recently moved to the ABQ BioPark from Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden. This move from a fellow AZA-accredited facility was recommended by the Orangutan Species Survival Plan (SSP), bringing Elok to New Mexico to join Sarah, Rubi, Pixel, and Bulan in the new Asia habitats.

He began exploring his new habitats on Friday, with many lucky guests getting the chance to observe his first time venturing out! Under the watch of the BioPark's expert primate care team, he will begin introductions with the rest of the family when the team determines he is comfortable and ready. Elok means "good looking" in Malay, and we couldn't agree more! Keep an eye out for this handsome gentleman on your next visit, and read more about him at our website: https://bit.ly/4kXzmEH
