Today was a special day. We were able to celebrate Sophie’s birthday, as it marked 1 year that we have had this wonderful gal in our care. We prepared a pupcake with all of her favorite ingredients, and gathered to wish her a “Happy Birthday”.
Sophie is a boisterous and lovable ball of joy who has been waiting for the right family to find her. She loves her toys, and has never met a stranger (she wiggles her whole body when she sees you). Sophie does best with dogs her own size, and is a bit selective about her doggie friends (so we do recommend bringing your dog to make sure they get along). While we love having Sophie around, we hope that she can find her family before her next birthday rolls around.
If you would like to meet Sophie, please fill out an interest form and we will reach out to schedule an appointment:

Today is Celebrate Shelter Pets Day!

Our BCACS Team wanted to share a fabulous article from our friends at #MaddiesFund.

Let’s honor our pets with Celebrate Shelter Pets Day! What do they love to do? What is your favorite thing about them? What is the funniest thing they do? Shout it from the rooftops!

Shelter Pet Project has created these beautiful graphics to help encourage others in your community to celebrate this fun day, and of course to #AdoptPureLove. Just right-click on the photo, save and share to your social channel(s)!

Animal Care Services Home

BernCo Animal Care and Resource Center reminds our citizens that we are still CLOSED to the public.

We are hosting adoptions by appointment only. BCACS is following the governor’s order by requiring all visitors, including children, to wear a mask while at the shelter. Those not wearing a mask will not be allowed to keep their appointment. Bernalillo County's lost and adoptable pets are our highest priority.

Animal services officers will be responding to emergencies and threats to public health and safety.

Citizens finding stray animals are asked to contact the enforcement line and not bring animals to the shelter as staffing levels are reduced.

Citizens needing to relinquish an animal must contact 505-975-5945. Approval will be made on a case by case basis by an intake specialist. Please do not bring animals to the facility without prior approval.

BCACS is asking for the public to be patient during this time as staff are working diligently to protect animals in our care and respond to the public’s requests.

It is time for #FosterFriday with BCACS.

Today's SPOTLIGHT is on these little orphaned kittens came to the BernCo shelter when they were a mere one week old. They were immediately herded off to our foster home because kittens this age can’t eat, defecate, control their own body temperatures, or just generally take care of themselves and need a substitute mama equipped with a bottle and a warm cozy nest. However, one skill they had immediately mastered was screaming, and because their wails for food and attention had a country twang, they were dubbed Waylon, Dolly, Patsy, and EmmyLou. These kittens are now a whopping four weeks old and have left their bottle in the dust, are eating yummy mushy food, and are using the litter box like champs. They will be ready for adoption in a month or so. Watching them grow and thrive has been an incredibly rewarding, if slightly sleep-depriving, experience, and BernCo has a great need of foster homes for young and abandoned kittens and puppies on a year-round basis.

So if you would like to raise a little herd of your own until they are old enough for adoption, please contact the BernCo foster coordinator Jolene Hewitt at [email protected] or visit our Foster and Volunteer page at https://www.bernco.gov/animal-care-services/volunteer-or-foster-.aspx.

Not all foster kittens and puppies are so young as to still be on the bottle, but if you are up to this life-saving task, we can provide the training you need.

UPDATE - Jagger, my lost Pomeranian, may be with a homeless couple in ABQ. Please see latest text from an ABQ community member. My daughter works in the ABQ Uptown plaza center and she'll keep a look out in that area. If you happen to see a homeless couple, and they have a Pomeranian that really looks like Jagger, please let me know where you see them at. If my daughter sees them, she will take pictures and I know of community outreach affiliates willing to help me trade the reword of $250 for Jagger. If the homeless couple does have Jagger, they found him and likely trying their best to care for him.
$250 reward for safe return of 4 mo Male Pomeranian - Jagger. Please see flyer in comments for details.

Making her at home ❤️ Thank you 😁
Chance at 9 weeks old
This past weekend was my pup Chance's 1st year with me. Chance was only 9 weeks old when I fell in love with those beautiful blue eyes. According to Bernalillo County Animal Resource, Chance came into the Center with his litter mates that were left in the rain in as box on someone's yard. The homeowner took them to the Center where they quickly went under quarantine. One pup was showing signs of parvovirus. Fortunately, it happened to be negative and they were placed for adoption. He was to have been adopted a week prior to my visit but that didn't flourish so he was back up for adoption. It just so happened that I was making a visit just to see what was available when this little guy took my heart away. From 10 weeks old till now, he's become a great companion.
