By car: Take I-25 to Gibson Blvd SE, exit to eastbound Gibson, go east to University Blvd (traffic signal), then turn left and go north 1.5 blocks, to 1840 University Blvd SE. The AHA office is located on the east side of University Blvd, use the main entrance on the south side of the building. By bus: The AHA office is served by two ABQ ride bus lines (route 16 and rush hour express route 217) and by Sun Van (para transit for the disabled).
AHA was founded in May 1967 by Resolution of the City of Albuquerque. AHA was initially organized as an internal department of the government of City of Albuquerque (Housing Authority Department), which later became the Albuquerque Housing Services (AHS) Division of the City's Department of Family and Community Services (DFCS). In 2010, the Mayor and City Council of Albuquerque adopted City Resolution 2010-145 (R-10-97), to create the Albuquerque Housing Authority as a component unit of the City and establish the AHA Board of Housing Commissioners to directly govern the AHA as of July 1, 2011. The AHA is a separate Public Body Corporate and Politic.
