I just watched you all on MilSpouseFest. Do you all have anything in your tool box that would provide reading assistance for Dyslexic High Schooler? Secondly, our 12th grader who reads at a 3rd grade reading level due to never being taught the Science of Reading is prepping for college. Do you know of help for college based on these circumstances?
Hello everyone. I am looking for help. My husband, Ret Major in AF,
passed away 2 years ago. I receive Survivors Benefit every month. Several months back I saw an increase in my income. When I went to file taxes, before covid virus, my tax preparer said I owe all the back taxes that were not taken out. That I currently owe $500.00! Is there anyone here who can point me in the right direction for answers? Since the virus, tax filing has been extended. Thank you very much.
From another Mil Spouse Page- can you provide insight/clarification?
I wanted to make you aware of some perplexing news regarding the recently passed Military Residency Relief Act from 12/31/18. VA is a Commonwealth and as such they do not have to recognize Federal guidance on the matter of the MSRRA as other sates do. They have taken the position that they will not be complying with the new law until it goes to the Virginia Assembly's floor. The assembly met on 2/15/19 and did not include this important legislation. Because they did not, VA tax's position is as follows: "The General Assembly will have to take this up as part of conformity to IRS code up again at a later date. Currently, VA Tax is still considering this matter as the same as previous years". I would suggest that you speak with your tax professionals and consider filing extensions to the May 1 deadline until this is resolved for 2018. I would imagine that VA would be impacted significantly by the new legislation and is doing everything they can to delay it. I would also be very careful how you are claiming 2019 because if they do not adopt the law you could have to pay!
Have you all seen this? It really upsets me because when will it stop? When we and/or our spouses elected to serve 20 or more years in the military, certain benefits were promised. Health care was one of them and health care, IMO, means having access to any drug your physician/health care team thinks is necessary.
Is MOAA involved, or have an opinion on this issue in Hawaii?
https://yesforourkeiki.com/why/ The lack of decent public schools is a huge issue for military families and the cost of private school is a massive burden. "The intent is only to apply this surcharge to residential investment properties valued at over $1 million." I cannot believe that we even have to vote on this.
Hello, I am hoping to get some ideas on what I can send my husband for our 1 year anniversary. He is currently deployed and I want to make it as special as I can. Please help
VIPKID, where have you been all of my military life?!
I’ve been a military spouse for 18 years (this Sunday 4/8) and as many of us know, maintaining consistent employment is not easy when you move with your spouse every 3 plus years. In the beginning, I used my journalism/communications degree to freelance at public radio stations wherever we moved, but the pay was low and I was more of a volunteer than an employee. Plus, being on a deadline often times delayed me from picking up my son after school or from getting him to an activity. Fast forward to 2017 where I find myself with a lot of time on my hands because my 16 year old now drives to school-FREEDOM!!! It was time to get a job, but journalism was no longer my passion. With a background in ESL (English as a second language) I searched for jobs teaching in my area and I found VIPKID, a Chinese company that teaches English to Chinese kids online. After a few weeks of interviewing and mock lessons, I was hired and I’m now making $20 an hour from a desk in my home and I don’t have to leave my house, battle traffic or work with people who make me miserable-I am my own boss. This is my business. The best part of this job is that it’s completely mobile. I can travel and teach. I can move and teach. I can teach from anywhere as long as I have a strong internet connection and a few props to assist me while I teach. I teach forty 25 minute classes a week-I can teach more or less, it’s up to me. Half of those classes are kids I call regulars-I see them week after week and I can’t imagine life without them-I love my kids! If you’d like info about this job, click on the link below or reach out to me directly and I’ll tell you all about it and even walk you through the hiring process. You don’t need to have teaching experience, but you do need a minimum of a bachelors degree.
Sigh. This is not a very accurate article. This has already happened at many bases! For example, my kids attended the elementary school on Beale AFB, CA. The school was located within the gates of the base but the building was owned and operated by the local school district. I would estimate 85% of the kids at the school lived on base. However, military families living off base could apply for a transfer to go to the school as could non-military families that lived in the district. The base security forces and the school cooperated in lock down drills. The school has an MFLC counselor assigned to it. While not DoDEa they were extremely involved in the base and very supportive of the military. Also, it is important to point out that in-lieu of DoD schools, schools do get DoD money and grants for military kids that attend. That is why you are required to fill out the federal impact aid forms every year. Plus, we not have the Military child Education Compact with many states and also School Liaison officers that assist with school transitions for military kids. Transfering schools from DoDEA to local districts has been very successful in many areas. I am actually surprised there are still so many DoD schools stateside. It is important to have accurate information.
