The Salvation Army is mobilizing to support families affected by the devastating earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10th.

Officers, staff, and volunteers are assessing needs in affected communities, while emergency relief efforts are underway to provide food, safe drinking water, hygiene supplies, mattresses, bedding, and other essential items. For years, staff at CIDAI León XIII in Tibás, San José, Costa Rica, worked to provide children with a safe and welcoming place to learn despite aging facilities and ongoing maintenance challenges.

Today, thanks to the generosity of the Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club, this Childcare and Child Development Center has brighter, safer spaces for the more than 120 children it serves. Renovations included improved restroom facilities, upgraded staff spaces, and a classroom with a new roof, better lighting, and improved ventilation.

These improvements will benefit children, families, and caregivers for years to come, creating a healthier environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive.

When Nang’andu became pregnant with her first child at 17, she was battling malaria and needed additional support. Through routine prenatal care at the Chikankata Mission Hospital’s maternal and child health clinic, nurses began treating her illness and continued following up at home until she recovered.

Years later, during another prenatal visit, routine maternal care helped identify her HIV status early. With ongoing treatment, encouragement, and support from health workers, Nang’andu and her husband received the care they needed, and both of her youngest children were born without HIV.

In rural Zambia, The Salvation Army’s maternal and child health outreach is bringing essential care closer to families through regular visits to hard-to-reach areas.

Through the Chikankata Mission Hospital, outreach teams provide immunizations, child growth monitoring, antenatal and postnatal care, family planning services and medication delivery, helping mothers and children receive the support they need before health concerns become more serious.
