SFA SCHOLARSHIP RENEWAL CHECKS *ROUND 1* have been delivered to past Award Recipients’ colleges’ finance offices! It takes a fair amount of fundraising, administrative prep time, and three sets of eyes 🧐🤓👀(at least!) to make sure they’re “just right.”

🫵 IF YOU HAVE NOT YET completed the online Renewal Application, the priority deadline is Friday June 30th.

The application will remain open until the end of the summer for students who do not yet have all required documentation ready. Questions? Please email Alyssa Samuel at [email protected].

Starting is half the battle. Don't wait!

SHHHHHHH it's a surprise! It WAS and STILL IS the BEST of surprises! After 30.11 years of marvelous teaching, MS. CORA KING accumulated quite a fan club—even the principal who hired her for her very first teaching gig 30 years ago AND her very own mother! Ms. King experienced all their gratitude and joy first-hand Friday, June 2nd with a resounding retirement party fundraiser!

"We who were given the great gift of having Ms. King in our children's lives … honor her with a scholarship for a graduating student in the ACHS Class of 2024, delivered through the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria," reads the tribute on the scholarship donation page.

As one grateful donor put it: "Cora, you are the gold standard!"

Another contributor said "Congratulations, Ms. King! Thank you for all that you have given to the luckiest first grade students time and time again!"

If you made it to the party honoring Ms. King for her extraordinary dedication to Alexandria City Public Schools and all the elementary students she has positively impacted over 30 years, but DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE TO GIVE (too busy singing? admiring? cheering?)—it is NOT TOO LATE to add to this meaningful legacy.

The Cora King Scholarship is fully funded for 2024 and will be awarded for the first time this spring. BUT!!!! Just as Ms. King showed up for us time and time again, let's make this a repeat scholarship! Making it to our goal of 6k will allow this to be awarded years in a row.

Please donate today by visiting the page…Let's grow Ms. King's scholarship!

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria (SFA) recently awarded $600,000 in college scholarships to graduates from the class of 2022. Soon, the nonprofit organization plans to match that amount when they award students already in college, contiuing a promise to offer support throughout their academic careers. Thus, $1.2 million dollars will be the largest amount ever given by the SFA.

“We are so very proud of the next generation of nurses, doctors, business leaders, computer scientists, recording artists, biologists, and professors ,” said SFA Board Chair Priscilla Goodwin, “who are heading off to college this fall thanks to the generosity of this community. Scholarships really do make dreams come true.”

The recipient of the Madelyn Anderson Memorial Scholarship, the largest offered, was Brianna Jerez. She will receive $40,000 over four years while she attends Virinia Commonwealth University. As the first member of her family to attend college, she plans to pursue a degree in criminal justice.

Late last month, the Scholarship Fund of Alexandrial (SFA) held its first in-person gala in three years. The event raised nearly $500,000 for scholarships, thanks to donations from the Alexandria community and its businesses.

During the gala, the board chair of the SFA, Priscilla Goodwin, announced that the nonprofit recently gave $600,000 in scholarships to 206 Alexandria City High School students who will graduate this next month. The SFA also plans to award an additional $600,000 to Titans already in college, supporting them as they complete their four-year degrees. That adds up to a commitment of $1.2 million.

Student speaker Brianna Jerez, the recipient of the Madelyn Anderson Scholarship (amounting to $40,000, the largest amount awarded to one individual) told the assembled crowd of local leaders, business owners, and high school alumni that she realized pivotal role higher education would have in helping to achieve her career goals. As a result of the schoalrship and financial aid, this member of the class of 2022 will graduate college debt free.

Thank you to Congressman Don Beyer for inviting me and sponsoring our table of young Democrats. I was delighted to attend and had such a great time that Govan Faine and I forgot to take pictures together (lol!)
