Our Douglas County fire departments once again brought extra Christmas cheer to selected young people and their families. Using a Heroes and Helpers grant from Target, firefighters, Garfield City Clerk Paulynn Terhark, and Target employees shopped for items the children had chosen through an online Target wish list. Staff at schools within the county selected 30 students to each receive $100 to buy gifts for themselves and their family members. The grant covered some of the cost, but fire departments also chipped in. The firefighters wrapped the gifts at the Alexandria fire station and delivered them in person. What a special memory. Thanks so much to Target and our firefighters and their dedication throughout the year!

Remember the dangerous storms Friday, August 14th in Douglas County? The National Weather Service has now confirmed an EF-0 rated tornado did touch down briefly in the southeast corner of the county near County Road 2 and Hidden Drive. Todd Krause, with the National Weather Service, used this video to get a site location. He visited Douglas County last Thursday where he found broken trees that helped him confirm the tornado. The video starts in Elbow Lake and concludes in the area by County Road 2. Thanks much to Tanner Schaaf for posting it.

The National Weather Service has included us in a tornado watch (the area in the yellow) until 8 p.m. As you know a watch means conditions are favorable for a tornado. Please continue to monitor your radio, television and social media.

Please be ready for predicted extremely high winds overnight in Douglas County. Whether you are camping or in a building with a basement, prepare now. Have a plan. Stay overnight with friends or family if you don't live in a sturdy structure. Move outdoor furniture into a storage building. Do not be out on the roads if you can avoid it. The National Weather Service says there is a high probability of this event affecting us tonight.

CAMPERS BE READY! Are you or someone you know out camping today? Thunderstorms late this afternoon and tonight may produce wind gusts that would make being in a camper dangerous. Have a plan to seek shelter if thunderstorms approach today.
