When the HHS Office of Inspector General comes calling, you show up prepared.

APC participated in an OIG listening session this week on GLP-1 compounding and made the case that deserves to be made: compounding pharmacies stepped into a genuine gap, meeting demand manufacturers couldn't at prices patients could actually afford.

We also pushed back on something that keeps coming up in these conversations: the conflation between legitimate, state-licensed compounding pharmacies and the illicit actors who were the actual source of most patient safety concerns.

Getting our perspective into that room early matters. More to come as OIG's evaluation moves forward.

A few things worth your attention this week.

Counterfeit GLP-1s and who's actually responsible. ASOP Global Board Member Ilisa Bernstein published a piece this week that does something rare in GLP-1 coverage: it draws a clear line between legitimate, state-licensed compounding pharmacies and the counterfeit operations that are the actual source of patient safety concerns. 40% of individuals who purchased GLP-1s online report receiving substandard products or being harmed. That's the problem worth solving.

What TrumpRx actually tells us about drug pricing. This piece from Drugstore Cowboy has some attitude, fair warning, but the core point is one compounding pharmacists already know well: the molecule is often the cheapest part. What's expensive is the PBM ecosystem, the hidden rebates, and the opacity around what things actually cost. Worth a read, snark aside.

DTE compounding is under threat, and now is the time to understand exactly what's at stake.

APC's June 25 webinar features Dr. Sarah Zielsdorf, MD, MS, walking through the full history of natural desiccated thyroid, the pharmaceutical industry's role in shaping clinical bias against it, and what compounding pharmacy professionals should be doing right now in response to FDA's controversial biologic reclassification.

If DTE is part of your practice, this one is not to miss. Register at the link below.

Accreditation that works with you, not just at you.

APC's partnership with the Coalition for Compounding Excellence (CCE) is growing fast, and it's not hard to see why. Unlike traditional checklist-based programs, CCE takes a risk-based approach, with pharmacist-led evaluators who actually understand compounding operations.

They also move when you need them to. This month, an auditor was deployed for an urgent visit with just five days' notice.. If something comes up, auditors don't just flag it and leave. In one recent example, an auditor worked directly with a PIC on the spot to address concerns about hood placement in a sterile facility.

PFM members get preferred pricing, in some cases close to half the cost of other programs.

Most document and SOP reviews happen remotely, so the on-site visit stays focused on observations and problem-solving. And if something comes up, auditors don't just flag it and leave. FDA adds non-injectable GHK-Cu back to Category 1. FDA Thursday re-added non-injectable GHK-Cu to Category 1 of the 503A bulks process after the nomination was withdrawn from further review. Injectable GHK-Cu remains separate and continues to raise FDA safety concerns. Importantly, this does NOT make GHK-Cu FDA-approved, but it does signal continued movement in the peptide discussion ahead of upcoming PCAC meetings.

There are many misleading websites and sellers advertising substances presented as compounded drugs, so it makes sense to confirm that the pharmacy filling your medication is the real deal.

To help, we created an easy verification tool called “IS IT LEGIT?” You can access it at the link below. (For the best results, enter the pharmacy’s exact name in the lookup field.)
