Their tactics are politically risky, strategist Greg Valliere says.
"A Social Security cost-of-living-adjustment of 8.7% is rare – enjoy it now," said Mary Johnson, a policy analyst at the Senior Citizens League. "This may be the first and possibly the last time that beneficiaries today receive a COLA this high."
Larger Social Security payments are set to begin this week for millions of retired Americans, who will see an 8.7% cost-of-living bump to their benefits.
“I’m sure everyone is anxiously awaiting because prices are still high,” said Mary Johnson, a Social Security and Medicare policy analyst at The Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group. “Just shopping for food to feed people during the holidays is going to be a huge challenge.”
Senior citizens and other Social Security recipients will start getting a heftier monthly benefit next month due to an 8.7% annual cost-of-living adjustment aimed at helping them cope with high inflation.
Today The Senior Citizens League is reporting that from January through December, the 5.9% COLA fell short of actual inflation every month by 46% on average and left the average Social Security benefit of $1,656 short by more than $42 per month and more than $508 for the year.

Seniors and other recipients are getting the biggest bump since 1981. But tax and Medicare issues may complicate things.
With the window closing December 7, seniors should compare costs carefully and watch out for marketing hype from Medicare Advantage plans.
You might not realize it, but seniors are getting shortchanged in two specific ways by Social Security.

The Social Security Administration has announced that the COLA will increase Social Security benefits by 8.7% starting in 2023.
A COLA this high is almost unprecedented.
This may be the first and the last time that today’s beneficiaries receive a COLA this high. There were only three other times since the start of automatic inflation adjustments that COLAs were higher (1979-1981).
The COLA this year will help, but it does not address the more essential concerns of seniors living at or near the poverty level, like putting food on the table, filling prescriptions, and making sure they have heat as winter nears. That is why The Senior Citizens League will continue to advocate for Social Security Reform, Medicare reform, and a special 1,400.00 stimulus for Social Security recipients.
“It’s the highest rate of inflation that retirees and disabled people today have really ever seen,” said Mary Johnson, a Social Security and Medicare policy analyst at The Senior Citizens League.
