This Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Island Heritage Month, USCIS salutes those who work for racial equality and justice. Hidemitsu Toyota became a after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWI. But in 1925 the Supreme Court ruled that Toyota was not entitled to citizenship because at the time U.S. law barred Asians from naturalizing. During WWII, the U.S. government interned him in Arkansas at the Rohwer Japanese American Relocation Center. Finally, over 25 years after he lost his citizenship, Congress eliminated racial distinctions in citizenship law. In 1959 at age 71, Toyota became a U.S. citizen.
