Alexandria Earth Day

Come out to Alexandria's Earth Day celebration from 10 AM - 2 PM today on Lenny Harris fields near GW Middle School. This year’s theme is Climate Change - Take Action! The event is a great way for kids and adults to learn about ways to live more sustainably. There will be fun activities, a bike rodeo, electric vehicle demos, food, exhibits, an art contest, and much more.

It’s also a chance for residents to encourage our City Council members to set good policy that protects the environment and lowers costs to consumers in an equitable way. On Monday Council will vote on whether to create a program that can lower utility bills for apartment tenants by finally giving landlords a way to finance energy efficiency investments. Let them know what you think.

Mark your calendar for Alexandria Earth Day 2018! This year's celebration will be held at Lenny Harris Memorial Fields at Braddock Park, 1005 Mt. Vernon Ave., on Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

ALX City Council unanimously endorsed Phase 1 of the updated Environmental Action Plan yesterday! This update was a joint venture of the Environmental Policy Commission, City Staff and local activists over the last 15 months. Many members of public spoke in support and lots of commentary on the recent UN IPCC report and the need for ALX to be part of the solution, and not part of the problem. Thank you Council! Now on to Phase 2!

01/31/2012

Nice to hear the NRA T-Shirt wearing voter for today's primary in Florida expressing a wish on NPR to get rid of the time wasting EPA. I assume his next glass of water, assuming he drinks the stuff, will be pure and bug free.

So, a sort of climate change agreement came out of Durban. If only we had a strong sense of urgency here in the US. 25% of French glaciers have melted since 1950s, there is going to be a drop of 8% in the glacial water supply to the countries in the northern sector of the Indian sub continent by 2050. There's a lot of trouble brewing.

11/17/2011

A new cell is being set up in the UK Met Office to see if weather events can be attributed to Climate Change or not. This could lead to court cases against reluctant governments. So far - Katrina - unable to tell. Killer heat waves in Europe and Russia - very likely. US cold spell -no, blame La Nina. Early days yet.

11/16/2011

Next meeting of EPC Monday 21st at City Hall.

11/08/2011

...and tomorrow's experience? Opening of new Public Safety Building at 1000. Built to LEEDs silver (at least). Pity about the gas guzzling patrol cars.

11/08/2011

Good experience this afternoon. Great things happening with ACPS on the energy saving front. Solar, geothermal, daylight wells, clean air, etc etc. Keep it up.

11/08/2011

Bad experience last night. City managers who had clearly never read the EAP and did not understand its intentions.

11/05/2011

Looks as if we might get up to full complement after Tuesday's council meeting.

10/29/2011

Two and a half items in the budget letter: a trained outreach person for OEQ, recycling bins for King Street and the half item: don't drop any existing programs.

10/14/2011

Good meeting of EPC last night. Heard about progress and long term plans for taking the city's sewerage systems through to the 2040s. People talk about clean air and water but dealing with waste is vital.
