Today, NavalX is celebrating Juneteenth, a day for reflection and celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On this day in 1865, U.S. Army Soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to share the news that all slaves were free. Since then, the day has been commemorated and known by many names such as "Freedom Day" and "Emancipation Day".
Our listeners who love new perspectives will enjoy our latest episode of NavalX Connecx, with a guest from the Army!
In this episode, Lieutenant Colonel Raphael Jimenez, Brigade Support Battalion Commander of 725 in Anchorage, Alaska, shares his view of leadership and how new leaders can be created and cultivated from the ranks.
"Those young leaders and paratroopers that we have in the brigade, those are the next. As they come in, we give them the opportunity to do something that they won't do in any other unit. They're going to be better for it when they leave, and they'll continue to lead in the Army."
Raphael also talks about working in extreme conditions, teamwork, giving constructive feedback, and redefining failure to keep the battalion moving forward.

“Mental Health is something critically important for our force. You gotta take care of your mind, just like you take care of your body!”
Tom Harker, Acting Secretary of the Navy, sits down for a Quick Chat with Mohawk Matt Denny about the importance of mental health across the Navy and Marine Corps. He also shares his desire to reduce the stigma around mental health.
SECNAV ends by sharing his love for volleyball, rowing machine and exercise with his kids as a way to decompress and recharge.
“I encourage all of you to go out and seek treatment if you need it; or if you see a buddy that’s struggling, get them to go get some help,” Harker added.

Check out our newest episode of the Connecx podcast for our first ever episode with a member of the Army! On Episode 33: 1 Geronimo & Adapting to Arctic Conditions, Mohawk Matt sat down with Lieutenant Colonel Todd Tompkins, the battalion commander for the 1st Battalion 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, aka 1 Geronimo in Alaska.
Lt. Col. Tompkins shared the storied history of the battalion, "We trace our roots back to, really the early portion of World War II before the United States got fully activated into the war, the US Army was looking for ways to evolve its capabilities--innovate--and they developed the airborne capability. So they stood up a test platoon, to kind of test airborne capabilities and out of it came 1 Geronimo."
Today, Tompkins is stationed in Alaska operating in Arctic conditions. From jumping into -15 degree water or sliding onto a prototype collapsible sled, he is fostering an innovation cell to encourage people from different battalions to generate new ideas and move the battalion forward, while occasionally peeking at the Northern lights from his backyard.

Podcast Episode 31
This week, on Episode 31 of the NavalX Connecx Podcast Mohawk Matt checked in with Major Lucas Burke, director of warfighter support division and his operations officer, Captain Mike Troncoso at U.S. Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity (MCTSSA) at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton to discuss their use of scrum to track productivity.
"I don't think you need permission to improve productivity at the unit level. That's nothing you should ever have to ask permission for. If commanders are preventing you from improving productivity or improving how you function as a unit, I think they're doing you a disservice."
Maj. Burke and Capt. Troncoso have seen results since implementing scrum and want to spread its use across the organization. They also hope to get more Marines engaged in the Centers for Adaptive Warfighting and the courses they offer.

This week, on Episode 30 of the NavalX Connecx Podcast Les Hubbard and Kevin Burnett talk to Mohawk Matt about how they came to lead the PEO MLB (Program Executive Office Manpower Logistics and Business Solutions) and what their mission on that team includes.
"Data transformation services is … an organizational forcing function to get us to kind of pick our heads up and take a more strategic look at opportunities for economies of scale and for normalizing the way we interface with the data stewards that are responsible for those information domains."
To achieve the goals of the Navy we can no longer have silos, and PEO MLB is enabling data sharing across the Navy team's IT platforms. Data transformation is intended to force the organization to make decisions that can allow for economies of scale for data processing programs within the Navy.

Chief of Naval Research stops by NavalX
Yesterday, March 23, Rear Admiral Lorin Selby stopped by to check out all the Hack the Machine fun going down in NavalX offices!
Mohawk Matt stopped him for a quick chat about what events like Hack the Machine mean to the Navy.
"This is a chance to engage folks we don't usually engage. … We have reached college students, some high school students, we reached folks internationally--folks we just don't traditionally reach out to. So this is a chance to open our aperture, look for the crowd sourced ideas and solve our hardest problems,” Selby said.
During the event, teams work on simulated problems encompassing some of the Navy's toughest challenges.
Thanks for stopping by RADM Selby! Stay tuned for more updates through the week.

NavalX Connecx Podcast Episode 29
"I'm a designer. I walk around and see the work as it could be... Even when I come into creating--we've created a 5G living lab and we're piloting on that, we've created unmanned logistics platforms and we're showing what that looks like on the battlefield and on base--what I recognize in myself is that I'm still not fully satisfied because I need that creation to inspire."
This week, Marine Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Newell shares his advice for being a leader of character, building partnerships, and using your creations to inspire others on Episode 29 of the NavalX Connecx Podcast.
Lt. Col Newell is the current director of the SoCal Tech Bridge at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. During his chat with Mohawk Matt, he shares that anyone can be a designer if they harness their unique perspective.
“Everyone has this unique vantage point of the world--the combination of experiences that they've had, make them a wholly unique designer. If they just knew how to follow that design wisely and move into creation, we could probably progress much more rapidly."
