South Dakota Change Network: Cary Thrall

Cary Thrall is an educator, community organizer, artist, yoga and meditation instructor in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She also heads CAT Scratch Studios, a small business which connects her interests to create stronger, more connected communities through creative arts and therapies.

Cary joined the Change Network to focus on Linking Fences 2019, her project to bring communities closer together by collaborating on public art installations using chain link fences. Hear Cary's story of leading community change.

North Dakota Change Network: Ruth Buffalo

Ruth Buffalo is a member of the North Dakota House of Representatives and works out of South Fargo, North Dakota. Her project focuses on educating her community on the prevalence of violence towards indigenous women, organizing tools to raise awareness such as conversations while making ribbon skirts and holding self defense classes.

Ruth was drawn to the Change Network to fulfill an unmet need she saw in her community and empower those around her to be better to one another. Hear Ruth's story of leading community change.

Keith BraveHeart is an Oglala Lakota artist working as an arts educator at Oglala Lakota College on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. He heads Buffalo Nation, a community-engaged arts initiative which facilitates community dialogues, education, and the transfer of cultural knowledge through creating art.

Keith joined South Dakota Change Network with a vision that Buffalo Nation can encourage and support Lakota artists to be leaders who empower their communities to incorporate representative art into their public spaces. Hear Keith's story of working to lead community change.
