The Day That Has Changed All Others (Easter Sunday)
Scripture : I Corinthians 15:12-22
Introduction
Historians have designated thirteen turning points in history—events that have changed the history of the world.
1. The Battle of Salamis in 485 BC.
This was the defeat of Persia by a small Athenian fleet. This stopped the Persian advance as far as a power.
2. The Great Wall of China in 221 BC.
This wall allowed Chin to unite seven warring kingdoms into China.
3. The Battle of Actium in 31 BC.
Octavious Caesar defeated Antony and Cleopatra. Without this victory there would have been no Roman Empire.
4. The Conquest of Spain in 711 AD.
Tariq Ibn Ziyad, the leader of the Arab in North Africa, set sail for Spain with a force of 700 warriors. This started a chain of events which within a year extended Arab influence throughout the White Iberian Peninsula and led to the great Renaissance.
5. The Black Death in 1347 AD.
It claimed 20 million lives and destroyed a whole way of life.
6. The Siege of Constantinople in 1453 AD.
This brought in the Ottoman Empire.
7. The conquest of the Inca’s in 1532 AD.
The conquest led to the Spanish conquest of the Andes.
8. The Marriage of Pocahontas in 1614 AD.
Ended the hostilities between Settlers and Indians in the New World, and allowed the English occupation of the new world.
9. The Battle for Canada in 1759 AD.
Gave British control of New France
10. Zulu’s at war in 1879 AD.
Blacks lost control of their own destiny.
11. The Battle Tsushima in 1905 AD.
Japan defeated Russia and paved the way for Russian Revolution in 1917.
12. The Russian Revolution in 1917 AD.
Brought 70 year experiment with communism—caused cold and hot wars
13. The Atom Bomb in 1945 AD.
Changed the nature of war and the world forever
These are turning points in history according to many historians.
Yet it seems to me they have missed the biggest turning point—the day Jesus rose from the dead.
This turning point opened up the spiritual turning points in my life.
As I think back over my life, it is easy to see that certain days were turning point days. I refer to them this in this way because things happened on those days that changed the direction of the rest of my life. For example, I remember the day I was filled with God’s Spirit. I was just a teenager, but that memory is still crystal clear in my mind. It happened in a bathroom in the boarding house where I was staying. It was a turning point in my life. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead filled me, and I felt the power of the resurrection in my life.
Well, of course this morning we join with Christians all over the world to celebrate the turning point day of all turning point days, the day that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. That day, the first Easter Sunday, has had more impact on humanity than all other days combined. I mean, the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead didn’t just change one life, it changed all lives! In fact, as I studied and worked to prepare for this message, I decided the best way to word this would be to say that Jesus’ resurrection has changed all of time, because it has! Any way you look on the time continuum, you see the affects of that day of days.
