The Fund For Alexandria's Child

The Fund For Alexandria's Child ...Helping Foster Children Enjoy Experiences Others Take for Granted. The Fund for Alexandria's Child helps children in foster care and those at risk of abuse or neglect to experience the richness of life through such activities as dance, art or karate lessons, summer camping, school field trips, Scouting and team sports.

Because of the generosity of our hometown neighbors, we can proudly say that Alexandrians are a community "taking care of our own."

Wow! Your generosity and the collective generosity of our community continues to inspire us. So many have committed to sponsoring. Nearly ALL of our children and teenagers in foster care have been matched as well as nearly all of our seniors and/or disabled adults.

BUT we are not yet finished.

We are committed to providing a happy holiday to over 400 families. We have identified sponsors for over 100 families.

BUT we are not yet finished.

As of right now we still have 300 low-income families that need help to enjoy the holiday season.

We need your help.

Sign up today at https://fundforalexandriaschild.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/fundforalexandriaschild/survey.jsp?surveyId=5 and we can match you with a family as soon as this week.

If you have signed up to sponsor already, we thank you tremendously. Would you consider sharing this message to your friends and family to help spread the word?

The season of giving is quickly approaching! Financial and emotional stress dampen the holiday cheer of our neighbors in need. This was especially true last year. 2020 was a devastating year for so many of us, but the community came together to make the holidays bright for so many families, seniors, and children in foster care. Due to COVID, the Holiday Sharing Program had to adjust its normal operations to make sure we were able to help families safely. Amazingly, our ability to bring joy only grew!

As a result of the ongoing pandemic there are once again some significant changes to our Holiday Sharing Program again this year. We hope to return to our traditional ways of joy giving in 2022.

One thing that has not changed: Our community needs you!

Visit https://www.alexandriava.gov/TheFundForAlexChild to find out the many ways you can join us to spread joy and cheer this holiday season.

You likely know someone who was raised by grandparents, an aunt or family friend. Or maybe you know the adult who took a child into their home. This is called kinship care – loved ones caring for a child when the parents are unable to do so. Kinship care keeps children connected to their family.

A relative has agreed to care for the 4 young children of her cousin. The children are 11, 7, 5, and 4. The children came to her with little appropriate clothing. Her home is small and currently some of the children are sleeping on air mattresses. The care of the children will be more long term than originally expected. Will you join us in helping to ensure the kids have a place to sleep, clothing, and some home safety items?

Any items purchased will be shipped directly to the family.

If you are able to make a purchase, please comment below what you have purchased so that we can ensure there are no duplicates. We are so, so grateful that we can say YES to helping in these situations knowing there are so many willing to jump in and make it possible.

If you have something to donate but don’t see it on the list below, please send an email to [email protected]

Thank you so, so much for always wrapping your arms around the children we serve!

It is the season of giving and we are working with the The Fund For Alexandria's Child to provide Thanksgiving for two families this year. Just so you know, your contribution will directly help a young adult who recently aged out of foster care and will be hosting his first thanksgiving in his new apartment for his mentor and his former foster parent. He loves to cook and is thrilled to finally make a big dinner for people who have made such an impact in his life. Each $5 donation will enter you in a raffle to win a full Tavi outfit (leggings, top and sports bra) which will be drawn on Sunday the 21st {when we will stop collecting donations}. Because, when you give, you get so much more in return and maybe in this case a super cute outfit! If you would like to donate, please use the link below or come to the studio to donate in person. https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/classic/ws?studioid=258120&stype=43&catid=100021&prod

Looking for a way to celebrate the holidays while helping families in need? The Fund for Alexandria's Child is still looking for donors to assist with the Holiday Sharing Program. This year is unique in that due to the COVID pandemic, we will only be collecting gift cards to share with families. No purchasing gifts, no wrapping, no delivering. How much easier can it be? If you are interested, please see the link below. As of today, we still have 160 families to match. Have questions, feel free to contact me here on Facebook. Sign up here today and and we can match you with a family as soon as this week. https://apps.alexandriava.gov/HolidaySharing/
Our NOVA partner, The Fund For Alexandria's Child, is already planning for graduation of the youth in their care and we would love to help make these important celebrations possible! Nationwide, only 3 percent of youth in foster care graduate high school. This year, Alexandria DSS has 10 graduates to celebrate who are BEATING THE ODDS! We are sensitive to the reality that so many are unable to help during this time. If you are able to help, we would so appreciate you checking out the Amazon Wish List they have prepared with items to be included in gift baskets presented to this year's graduates. Even if you can’t help by purchasing, you certainly can by getting the word out 🎉 Let us know if you are able to snag something in support of one of these 10 grads! We appreciate you 🎉 https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3F110O10XZT5I?ref_=wl_share
Gerry Cooper and Nancy Van Gulick have been “friends” of Guest House for more than fifty years, combined. Nancy worked with the runaway shelter in Old Town as a volunteer in the 1970s. She also became involved with the The Fund For Alexandria's Child. She said, “That’s where I became involved with incarcerated parents, and where I became involved with Guest House. I realized these kids had little hope if their parents couldn’t get better.” Gerry is a member of Old Presbyterian Meeting House. He first learned about Guest House about 10 years ago through the Service and Justice Board at OPMH. He said, “The outgoing moderator wanted to introduce me to all non-profits in Alexandria we support as a church. He brought me over FoGH and introduced me to Kari; it started a love affair with FoGH that continues to this day. I was so impressed with all FoGH does for the women; and I was appalled that state doesn’t have more ‘guest houses’ around the state. The state should be concerned with re-acclimating women back into society.” Nancy, who has supported FoGH for all 45 years of its existence, says she’s most impressed with, “The attitude of the women. They get there and everyone is so open and available to them, I think that’s a good thing. And they have good results, it’s a program that works, and I’ve seen a lot that didn’t. It’s not a shelter, these women get a good sense of self-awareness.” Gerry really admires, “The care that FoGH gives to those who are in their charge in both the areas of self-discipline and the opportunity to connect with local businesses that clients might be able to work for. FoGH gives women the opportunity to get back on their feet and re-start their lives in a different way than what they did before they were incarcerated.” Gerry and Nancy are both dedicated to continuing their commitment to FoGH.
