730. That is the average number of days a child spends in foster care in the United States. Within that time, there are so many opportunities for moments of joy. As we near the final push of ticket sales to the Hope Grows Here Gala taking place on May 19th, we invite you to join us to help create positive everlasting childhood memories for some of Alexandria's most vulnerable.
Remember your first bike? How about your prom? How about the first time you scored a goal or got a good grade on a test you'd been studying for? Childhood should be filled with these moments; the moments we carry with us to adulthood, the ones that help shape who we are.

We still have 100 tickets left which means 100 opportunities still left for you to make a difference. The Fund cannot do this work without your support!

Tomorrow’s the BIG DAY!! is here, and our hearts are filled with such love and appreciation for being a part of the Fund for Alexandria’s Child, Spring2ACTion 2023, and the City of Alexandria. We are overwhelmed by the continuous generosity of this community. Thank you to all those who have supported the Fund for Alexandria’s Child Early Giving Week and those who still plan to give tomorrow. Just last week, the Fund gave a pack n’ play and fitted sheets to a six-month-old who only had a baby swing to sleep in and a pack n’ play and bassinet for a three-week old infant who is being discharged from the hospital. Because of you, they will have safe places to sleep!
And thank you to the other amazing organizations that are also participating in Spring2ACTion this year and to all those in the community who support them. None of us could do our important work without you!
The Fund for Alexandria’s Child attended the Spring2ACTion Kick Off event last week and enjoyed learning more about each of these organizations and how they make a difference. We feel privileged to be a part of this group! We also attended the Volunteers are the Heart of Alexandria appreciation event and were even more inspired and motivated by the work that is being done in this community and by the people who give so much of their hearts and time to help others. THANK YOU!
Please continue to make a difference and donate to Spring2ACTion through April 26th. If you would like to donate to the Fund’s Emergency Bed Fund you can do so at https://www.spring2action.org/organizations/the-fund-for-alexandria-s-child

Happy New Year Friends,

I have news that is bittersweet to share. After 8 years of leading The Fund for Alexandria's Child, it is time for my farewell. I have recently been promoted as Supervisor to the Resource (Foster Care & Adoption) Unit.

This is a moment of cheer but also tears for me as I bid you adieu as the Coordinator of Community Resources. Leading the Fund for Alexandria's Child has been the greatest honor of my career. I have had the wonderful privilege of witnessing the generosity and support of our community wrap its arms around our children and families again and again. You have inspired me. You have amazed me. Thank you all for more years than I ever expected of your kind support. It is not just the meaningful work together that I will miss but the real difference we made together. I look forward to hearing about all the good work you continue to do. This is not an end to my commitment to The Fund but a new beginning as I supervise and support your new leader! I hope the amazing support you have provided to me and The Fund will continue for years to come.

Please join me in congratulating Christine “Chrissy” Levine as the new Coordinator of Community Resource in Child Welfare Services!

Chrissy has been a valued member of the Child Welfare Services team at Alexandria Department of Community and Human Services since 2004. In her most recent role, she has been responsible for recruiting, training, completing mutual family assessments, and supporting foster families. She has over 20 years of experience in child welfare and holds a Master of Social Work Degree.

Chrissy has been an active supporter and volunteer for the Fund for Alexandria’s Child since 2009. In 2014, she became an active member of the advisory council and over the years has assisted the Fund in numerous capacities including the Gala and Holiday Sharing to name a few. Her passion and commitment to the Fund over the years, and the relationships she has built within the department and the community will serve her well in this new position.

Chrissy hit the ground running in December and met quite a few of you during Holiday Sharing distribution week. She is excited to connect with all of you who love and support The Fund and the children and families we serve.

---Krystal

Our community is amazing! Thank you to everyone who has shared our previous post. Thank you to everyone who has the purchased an item or two from our Amazon wish list to spread summer fun to children, teens, and young adults in Alexandria impacted by the child welfare system. For a lot of people the 4th of July really feels like the beginning of summer.

Last week DCHS Child Welfare Social Workers asked children and teens on their caseloads what is one item that would make your summer. We compiled all the items to an Amazon Wishlist
https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1IZ238A4X1E9D?ref_=wl_share

These wishes come directly from our youth.

The wishes vary from basic needs like t-shirts or household items to summer fun essentials like a splash pad or roller skates. These items will spark their imagination, unleash talents, fulfill a need, and simply make them happy.

We would love to clear the site by granting every single wish! Please help us by granting a wish or tow if you are able or sharing this post on your page to spread awareness about our campaign to grant simple wishes of kids and young adults who have experienced the trauma of foster care.

While getting just the thing you wished for means so much, more importantly it sends the message that someone sees you, knows your likes, and cared enough to make you smile.

Graduation is right around the corner. You can help us celebrate our 2022 graduates. This year, we have 9 amazing youth to celebrate! The significance of this achievement cannot be emphasized enough. Due to the relative instability of growing up in foster care, nationally, only about 50% of the children graduate from high school, and the number of college graduates is significantly lower. We are proud of each of them and are extremely hopeful for their future. Being able to celebrate our youth is one of the highlights of our year. The look of shock and excitement on their faces when they see all the gifts never grows old. We hope you will join us again in celebrating this milestone. Now more than ever these youth need to be lifted up & celebrated for their extraordinary accomplishments. ⠀

It's so easy to help from the comfort of your home. Consider purchasing an item from our Amazon Wish List to be included in gift baskets presented to this year's graduates https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3F110O10XZT5I

This month we celebrated quite a few birthdays! 5 teenagers in foster care had a birthday in March and were celebrated thanks to our partner in joy giving Worthdays! One young person's 21st birthday was made extra special because of their birthday box. We are told she couldn't stop smiling and had tears of joy as she opened everything. Thank you Worthdays! Your message of “you are worth it”, is felt every single month by children and teens we serve.

Thank you Be The Good Project for replacing our little food pantry! This one is a bit bigger so even more non-perishable food can be available for those in need. Gratitude to our community for continuing to keep it full week after week. 🥰

Unfortunately, the winter weather took a toll on the previous pantry, resulting in a broken door. Last evening we were able to install a bigger, brand new unit for visitors at the Alexandria City Department of the Community and Human Services. 💜

It is the season of giving and we are working with the The Fund For Alexandria's Child to provide Thanksgiving for two families this year.
Just so you know, your contribution will directly help a young adult who recently aged out of foster care and will be hosting his first thanksgiving in his new apartment for his mentor and his former foster parent. He loves to cook and is thrilled to finally make a big dinner for people who have made such an impact in his life.

Each $5 donation will enter you in a raffle to win a full Tavi outfit (leggings, top and sports bra) which will be drawn on Sunday the 21st {when we will stop collecting donations}. Because, when you give, you get so much more in return and maybe in this case a super cute outfit!

If you would like to donate, please use the link below or come to the studio to donate in person.

Looking for a way to celebrate the holidays while helping families in need? The Fund for Alexandria's Child is still looking for donors to assist with the Holiday Sharing Program. This year is unique in that due to the COVID pandemic, we will only be collecting gift cards to share with families. No purchasing gifts, no wrapping, no delivering. How much easier can it be? If you are interested, please see the link below. As of today, we still have 160 families to match. Have questions, feel free to contact me here on Facebook.

Sign up here today and and we can match you with a family as soon as this week. https://apps.alexandriava.gov/HolidaySharing/
Our NOVA partner, The Fund For Alexandria's Child, is already planning for graduation of the youth in their care and we would love to help make these important celebrations possible!

Nationwide, only 3 percent of youth in foster care graduate high school. This year, Alexandria DSS has 10 graduates to celebrate who are BEATING THE ODDS!

We are sensitive to the reality that so many are unable to help during this time. If you are able to help, we would so appreciate you checking out the Amazon Wish List they have prepared with items to be included in gift baskets presented to this year's graduates. Even if you can’t help by purchasing, you certainly can by getting the word out 🎉

Let us know if you are able to snag something in support of one of these 10 grads! We appreciate you 🎉

Gerry Cooper and Nancy Van Gulick have been “friends” of Guest House for more than fifty years, combined.

Nancy worked with the runaway shelter in Old Town as a volunteer in the 1970s. She also became involved with the The Fund For Alexandria's Child. She said, “That’s where I became involved with incarcerated parents, and where I became involved with Guest House. I realized these kids had little hope if their parents couldn’t get better.”

Gerry is a member of Old Presbyterian Meeting House. He first learned about Guest House about 10 years ago through the Service and Justice Board at OPMH. He said, “The outgoing moderator wanted to introduce me to all non-profits in Alexandria we support as a church. He brought me over FoGH and introduced me to Kari; it started a love affair with FoGH that continues to this day. I was so impressed with all FoGH does for the women; and I was appalled that state doesn’t have more ‘guest houses’ around the state. The state should be concerned with re-acclimating women back into society.”

Nancy, who has supported FoGH for all 45 years of its existence, says she’s most impressed with, “The attitude of the women. They get there and everyone is so open and available to them, I think that’s a good thing. And they have good results, it’s a program that works, and I’ve seen a lot that didn’t. It’s not a shelter, these women get a good sense of self-awareness.”

Gerry really admires, “The care that FoGH gives to those who are in their charge in both the areas of self-discipline and the opportunity to connect with local businesses that clients might be able to work for. FoGH gives women the opportunity to get back on their feet and re-start their lives in a different way than what they did before they were incarcerated.”

Gerry and Nancy are both dedicated to continuing their commitment to FoGH.
