On a recent day, driving out of the sun into a wooded community resulted in a temperature drop from 91 to 86 degrees. We all try to stay in the shade in hot weather, competing for the parking spaces under trees. What we may not realize is that tree-lined neighborhoods are cooler not just because of....

Happy 80th Anniversary Tauxemont!
In January 1941 twenty young families incorporated to fulfill their goal of building affordable houses for their growing families through cooperatively self-contracting. In March they purchased 12.36 acres of land, and by September began moving into the twenty identical houses in the wooded landscape that became Tauxemont Rd.
See you there Tauxemonters.
Many of our birds and small mammals benefit from the dead wood of Tauxemont's natural environment.
Tree snags are “a gourmet restaurant,” that is, from a bird’s perspective, Larry Cartwright told a group of Northern Virginia Audubon at Home ambassadors on Feb. 20 in a Zoom meeting.

During the hot, dry months of May thru Oct, Tauxemonters are responsible for following our community's 'Odd/Even House Number Watering System' (even-numbered houses water only on even-numbered days; odd-numbered houses water only on odd-numbered days). This staggered use enables us to reduce the 'real-time demand' on our water system.
Additionally, Tauxemonters should follow these conservation tips:
• Avoid watering lawns and plants during the hottest part of the day or when it is windy to minimize water losses from evaporation.
• Do not leave watering unattended or unmetered for more than 30 minutes. Use simple metering devices to limit watering times automatically to 15 to 30 minute intervals.
• Avoid excess watering. Our clay soil can absorb only about 1" of water per week, so using this small amount will keep native landscapes lush and prevent runoff from over-watering. (aerate clay soil yearly to help with moisture retention)
• Re-use 'gray' water (from dishwashing, etc.) for outdoor watering
• Use a broom, rather than a hose, to clean sidewalks and driveways
• Plant in spring or fall when watering requirements are lower
• Use tree 'gators' (refillable slow drip bags) for irrigating young trees
• Reduce the amount of lawn by planting drought-tolerant and climate-adapted plants and grasses
Using our water prudently is the responsibility of every Tauxemont waterworks user in order to help us meet water demand, not only during peak season but all-year round.

This Alexandria Avenue house is a prime example of the original aluminum roof construction of a number of historic Tauxemont homes. Sadly, this house was torn down in early 2013 in favor of a newly-constructed dwelling.
