It's that time of year again! The 2026 Alexandria Fair and Horse Show will kick off tomorrow night with the Alexandria Fair Parade. Traffic will become heavy and the areas around the fairgrounds and parade route will be congested so please plan accordingly.

Only floats and parade participants will be allowed in the south lot of the middle school, all drop-offs must be done in the north lot. The parade route, Washington Street to East Main Street, will shut down at 6:00 PM to allow for horses and riders to travel to the start location. The parade will begin at 6:30 PM.

We look forward to another fun and safe year at the fair. As always, officers will be on-site at the fairgrounds should anyone need assistance during their time at the fair. Thank you to everyone for your continued support and make sure to stop by and see us at the command center.

Recently Chief Cooper and Assistant Chief Roessler traveled to the Kentucky Association of Chief's of Police Conference in Lexington to receive the departments 6th state accreditation. Agencies that choose to be accredited must meet and maintain commonly accepted professional standards for efficient and effective operations. This four year certification shows that we have examined all aspects of operations, made conscious decisions about the policies and procedures of our agency, and implemented those policies in such a way that meets the needs of law enforcement in our community.

We are proud to have held this status for 24 years. Thank you for the continued support of our employees, city officials, and community in helping us to maintain these standards.

We are excited to welcome Andrew Scheuer to the Alexandria Police Department. At the city council meeting on August 6th he took his oath of office and was welcomed to the city by Chief Cooper, Mayor Schabell, his fellow officers, and council. Andrew is a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Stout and previously worked for the Boone County Detention Center. He begins his basic training academy this week and will graduate in February.

We are now approved for 17 full-time officers and 1 part-time school resource officer. In addition we maintain two police clerks and one police social worker. We remain committed to high-quality, effective policing for our community. We aim to achieve this through adequate staffing, efficient scheduling, and providing relevant services. Thank you to the City of Alexandria and our community for your continued support.

On Wednesday August 12th students will be returning to school. In the 2026 legislative session lawmakers passed changes to KRS 189.370 which governs when vehicles must stop for school and church busses with their stop signs deployed. Effective July 15th, 2026 all vehicles traveling in both directions on a four lane highway MUST stop for a bus with its stop arm extended and signal lights activated. The only exception is for highways separated by an elevated barrier or unpaved median.

This change will greatly impact the flow of traffic along US27 in our city, as there are 10 stops along US27 which are affected. We ask that you please operate with increased caution in the vicinity of a bus during morning and afternoon pick-up and drop-off times. Officers will be diligent in stopping violators in hopes to educate and raise awareness of the changes.

Safety is our number one priority. We would like to thank Campbell County Schools and local media for their collaboration on getting this information out to the public. Below is a list of all stop locations within the city limits and attached pictures for reference.

The SD1 project on Ridgewood Drive is complete and the road is open.

Good news! The SD1 Storm Water Main Line Replacement Project on Ridgewood Drive has been completed, and Ridgewood Drive is now fully open to traffic.

Effective July 15th new laws regarding school bus stop signs went into effect statewide. These changes differ from prior laws which did not require vehicles to stop in opposing lanes of a four-lane highway.

Locally, this will have the biggest impact on traffic traveling on US27. Due to a lack of a raised barrier or grass median in most areas, traffic in all directions will now need to stop for busses that are loading or unloading students.

Additionally, with the use of stop arm cameras, if a vehicle disregards a bus stop sign and a registration can be obtained, it is presumed the registered owner of the vehicle is operating it and can be cited.

Please drive aware; put down your devices, follow posted speed limits, leave adequate space, and pay attention to your surroundings.

Please be advised that SD1 will begin repairs to a 48-inch culvert pipe on Ridgewood Drive beginning Monday, July 27, 2026. The work will take place near the intersection of Ridgewood Drive and Tulipwood Court and will require a full road closure for approximately one week.

📅 Closure Dates:
July 27, 2026 – August 3, 2026
(Reopening expected Monday, August 4, weather permitting.)

⚠️ During construction, an approximately 24-foot section of roadway will be removed. Traffic will NOT be able to drive through, around, or past the work zone.

Detour Information:
➡️ Residents living on Ridgewood west of Tulipwood Court will only be able to exit the subdivision via Brookwood Drive to US 10.
➡️ Residents living on Ridgewood east of #168 will only be able to exit via the AA Highway or access US 10 via Grandview Road.

🚧 SD1 is expected to install advance warning signs within the next 48 hours to notify residents of the upcoming project.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation as these necessary repairs are completed to improve the infrastructure in our community.
