October was Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Commission participated in the Oakland Baptist Church's annual Walk it Out Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. We also had success with Pam's Pies fundraiser for the Art on the Avenue last month. It raised $1,200 this year, which will be donated to the Vola Lawson Breast Cancer Memorial Fund. The fundraiser was held in honor of long time pie baking organizer Pam Fitzgerald, who passed away recently due to breast cancer.

Women Confront Civic Challenges in Alexandria

The Alexandria Gazette covered our civic action event back in March, where we had a panel of women leaders discuss their experiences and struggles in civic participation.

As we move into 2020, we are planning community events and guiding legislative priorities with women in mind. Last month, we held a retreat to create a gameplan to address areas of concern that the Status of Women pointed out and that these women voiced.

It's Been 100 Years Since the 19th Amendment

It's September 2019, which means that the 100th anniversay of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, is coming up soon. We're planning an ad-hoc group meeting with the Commission for Women to create a course of action to continue serving Alexandria's women for 2019-2020.

Another meeting is coming up next week. On September 10th, we'll be planning our events for next year.
Read about it in our recent newsletter.

This article is quite timely. With all the hats I have worn as a woman, and all the roles I’ve had advocating for women, especially and most recently as a Commissioner with the Commission for Women, I have always been a firm believer in fairness, just actions, balance, and worth - for ALL. Having a “Level playing field” is essential for a strong community.

I have had several community conversations lately that are revolving around this issue of (un)equal pay. Most women do not realize it *is* really happening around them, in their workplace, because of factors such as their own lack of seniority or clearance status to view pay grades/raises/salaries/step increases/bonuses/performance reviews. Due to the lack of transparency, it makes it difficult for them to ascertain what men in the same positions are making - which is usually 80 cents or less to the male dollar.

The Alexandria Commission for Women has published its findings in a detailed report last year that bring this issue (and lots of other concerns) to light and claim validity to this argument in this article.

We as a City, and as a society, have a lot of work to do to ensure justice for all on that level playing field.
