Growing in ALX: inq Tattoos - AEDP

Last month, we caught up with Maria Joukov, Co-Founder & CEO of Inq Tattoos. Located on King St., inq is a female- and veteran-owned small business that opened in July 2019. Says Maria, "My husband and I created inq from the ground up. We are not tattoo artists and had no experience in this industry, but we able to lean on the insights of an experienced tattoo artist with 50 years in the industry who has seen it evolve from an underground scene to the more mainstream phenomenon it has become. While tattoos have become extremely popular, the experience of getting a tattoo was still largely not quite fitting with the expectations of today’s customer. That’s really what inq is solving."

Restaurant owners struggling to find employees as restrictions ease

As our restaurants continue to recover, helping them recruit and train talent is an important role for our Alexandria/Arlington Regional Workforce Council & Workforce Development Center, City of Alexandria, VA. Thanks to Jess Arnold & WUSA 9 for highlighting Alexandria's newest restaurant, Barca Pier & Wine Bar and the opportunities our restaurants have to hire more local talent as state restrictions on capacity continue to be lifted.

The Alexandria Restaurant Partners said a lot of their restaurants need 30% more staff.

Happening TODAY!
is an ongoing, regular speaker series intended to bring together the community to discuss the kinds of issues and problems that Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus in Potomac Yard will explore.

This month's topic: Ending the Pandemic: COVID-19 Vaccines and Preparing for the Next One. COVID-19 vaccines may be the key to ending the pandemic. They join a list of vaccines that over time have prevented serious illness and even death around the world. As demand surges for the COVID-19 vaccine, the spotlight now turns to understanding how vaccines work. Learn about the basics, why they are important, and how they have protected mankind for centuries. Virginia Tech researchers will also walk us through how they are using data to forecast and prevent COVID-19 outbreaks.

Presented in partnership with Virginia Tech, Port City Brewing Company, and the Alexandria Library.

Arlandria-Chirilagua Draft Housing Recommendations

The Arlandria Chirilagua Plan Update is committed to preserving the cultural diversity of the community through housing, land use, design, open space, infrastructure, and transportation recommendations. During 2020, residents and neighborhood stakeholder groups shared concerns and ideas regarding housing. Staff have developed draft housing recommendations based on input received and organized them under four themes.

Neighbors and organizations in the Arlandria-Chirilagua neighborhood are invited to provide input on the recommendations through an online questionnaire open through April 14. Feedback received will help finalize recommendations for consideration by the Planning Commission and City Council in Spring 2021.
