A raccoon that came into contact with a person and dog in the Potomac Yard neighborhood last week tested positive for rabies.
The person and dog are safe, and the raccoon was killed before being tested. Still, this rabid raccoon is a part of a bigger picture: rabies exists widely in wild animals around Virginia, and it’s always important to be safe.
Don’t approach wild animals, even if they look sick, and if you see an animal you think may have rabies, call Alexandria Animal Control at 703.746.4444.
