Ever wondered what happens to your recycling after it leaves your curb? 🚛♻️

Your efforts at home are just the beginning! When you recycle, your items embark on an important 4-step journey to get a second life:
1️⃣ Collected: Items are picked up by a licensed hauler or brought to a drop-off site.
2️⃣ Sorted: Materials are brought to a recycling facility where workers and specialized equipment separate them by type.
3️⃣ Baled & Sold: Clean, separated materials are compacted into large bales and shipped out to manufacturers.
4️⃣ Made into New Products: Your old bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard are transformed into brand-new products! Your daily actions make a real difference for our environment!

Did you know that not all pizza boxes can be recycled?

In short: Clean, food free pizza boxes are good to recycle in your cart. ✅
If the pizza boxes are greasy or soiled from the pizza, don’t place them in your recycling cart! Instead, compost them by dropping them off at our organic recycling (food scraps) drop sites. Remember to take out all plastic items, packets, and dipping sauces from the box before dropping off!

Recycling or Wish-Cycling? 🤔 Which glass goes in the recycling bin?
Not all glass is created equal! While Food & Beverage Glass (like glass bottles and food jars) is 100% recyclable, Non-Foodware Glass (such as window panes, drinking glasses, ceramics, mirrors, and stained glass) should NOT go in your curbside recycling bin.

Why the difference?
Food & Beverage Glass: Made of pure glass with consistent melting points, making it easy to melt down and recycle into new bottles and jars.
Non-Foodware Glass: Often contains added treatments, chemical linings, or different heat resistances. Because they melt at different temperatures, mixing them in can contaminate the recycling stream and disrupt the processing equipment.

Quick Tip:
YES: Glass food jars, condiment containers, juice bottles, and beverage bottles.
NO: Window glass, drinking glasses, mirrors, cookware, or decorative glass.
Avoid wish-cycling—recycle right!

One easy way to help improve recycling is to keep the caps on! Keeping lids and caps on bottles, cans, and other recyclables helps sorting machines do their job and ensures more materials get recycled properly.

Trick-or-treating just got a little greener! Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management is teaming up with Legacy of the Lakes Museum for this year's Boo Boats Trick or Treat.

Stop by our table to pick up a free reusable bag, your choice of a cute bumblebee or ladybug! They're perfect for carrying Halloween candy, and they'll keep working long after the treats are gone. Use them for groceries, library books, or your next trip to store.

$20 + 3.5% CC Fee: CRT (tube) TVs and monitors
$10 + 3.5% CC Fee: Flat-screen TVs and monitors
$5 + 3.5% CC Fee: Laptop, tablets, towers, e-readers
$5 + 3.5% CC Fee: Misc items: Blu Ray/DVD/VCR players, receivers, stereos, gaming consoles, desktop printers, scanners, fax machines other like devices.
Free: Keyboards, mice, remotes, speakers, household telephones.

🍂 Friendly Reminder: Keep yard waste out of your regular trash! 🚫🗑️
Yard waste is not accepted in regular garbage, and the Pope/Douglas Waste-to-Energy Facility is not permitted to incinerate it.
Leaves have completed their seasonal mission—there’s no need to sentence them to the garbage bag! 🍃✨

Local Disposal options may include:
-Curbside collection through participating haulers
-Municipal yard-waste drop sites
-Construction and demolition landfill drop sites
-Backyard composting
