Urgent Action Needed: County Tax Increases and Budget Hearing
Fellow Residents;
The Countyโs budget hearings are scheduled for April 22, 23, and 24th at 3:00 PM.
By law, the County is required to advertise the hearing and disclose the agenda, particularly regarding any tax increases.
Hereโs what is happening:
1. Food Tax: The County is planning to enact a food tax, adding up to 6% ( or possibly 4%) tax on top of the existing 6% sales tax on food and beverages. If this passes, we could end up paying up to 12% tax on food and drinks, which will hit everyoneโs wallets hard.
2. Real Estate Tax Increase: The County is also planning to increase the real estate tax rate from 1.125% to 1.140%. Additionally, there is a Rain Tax of 0.0375%, which will bring the total real estate tax rate to 1.1775%โone of the highest in the nation.
3. The Board of Supervisors is claiming that enacting the food tax will result in a break on the real estate tax. The food tax is not a solution to the high property tax rate, and even the Chairman, Jeff McKee, knows this. The food tax will only add more burden on us while providing more money for the County to spend.
4. The Truth About Real Estate Tax: Even if the real estate tax rate stays at 1.125%, residents will still pay higher taxes due to a 6.5% increase in property assessments. This means we are already paying an additional 6.5% on our property taxes due to the increased assessments. If the County Supervisors were honest with us, the truth would be: โWe would like to increase your property tax by 8%โ (6.5% from higher assessments and 1.5% from the proposed increase).
5. The Hidden $1 Billion: The County is not mentioning that the 6.5% increase in assessed property values is already bringing in over $1 billion in additional revenue to the County. So, where is this money going? Yet, they still want to burden us with even more taxes.
6. Tax Burden and Public Transparency: The Board of Supervisors should be thankful that we are already paying the 6.5% property tax increase due to higher assessed values. Many people are already struggling with this additional burden. We should never agree to any more tax increases, including the food tax. The 6.5% increase in property assessments means an average household is paying $700 more in taxes. Why are they enacting new taxes and increasing property taxes? We need to wake up and show up.
We deserve to know whatโs happening and have a say in these decisions.
What You Can Do:
โข Attend the budget hearings on April 22, 23, and 24th to make your voice heard.
โข Spread the word to ensure that more people know about the tax increases and the deceptive tactics the County is using.
โข Contact your County Supervisor and demand that they stop these tax increases and be transparent with the public.
We cannot let this happen without a fight. Together, we can hold our leaders accountable and stop this unfair tax burden from being imposed on us.
