SECRETARY OF STATE TO DISTRIBUTE ABSENTEE BALLOT APPLICATIONS TO ALL SOUTH DAKOTA REGISTERED VOTERS
PIERRE – South Dakota Secretary of State Steve Barnett announced today that his office will mail absentee ballot applications to all South Dakotans registered in the statewide voter registration file, with the exception of voters that have already applied for the 2020 election cycle or voters in counties sending applications on their own . “Ensuring every South Dakota voter has access to exercise their right to vote is the goal of all election officials in our state. In response to the current pandemic, we are encouraging all South Dakotans to utilize our state’s absentee vote-by-mail option for our upcoming elections. Absentee ballot applications will be mailed to each registered voter at the mailing address listed on their voter registration form,” Barnett stated.
Absentee ballot applications are set to be mailed between April 17-24. Voters are encouraged to complete their application as soon as possible to allow for delivery and processing times. Once an application is verified by the county auditor, a ballot will be mailed to the voter.
State law requires completed absentee ballot applications to be notarized or include a photocopy of an acceptable photo identification card. Acceptable photo identification cards include a South Dakota driver’s license or non-driver ID card, tribal photo ID, passport or other picture ID issued by the United States government, or a current student photo ID issued by a South Dakota high school or postsecondary education institution. Voters lacking access to a copy machine or notary public may take a photo of their ID using their phone or camera and email it to their county auditor. Please contact your county auditor for more information regarding this option. County auditor contact information can be found on the Secretary of State’s website at www.sdsos.gov.
Voters that don’t receive an application due to an undeliverable address and wish to obtain an absentee ballot may request an application from their county auditor or download the form on the Secretary of State’s website at www.sdsos.gov. South Dakota’s primary election will be held June 2, 2020
FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CALL THE HANSON COUNTY AUDITOR AT 605-239-4714 OR E-MAIL [email protected]

03/17/2020

At an emergency meeting this Morning, the Hanson County Commissioners along with department heads met to discuss the Coronavirus epidemic. The discussion primarily was how we could as a county ensure the safety of our employees and citizens. The Coronavirus is spreading throughout the country with now 10 confirmed cases in South Dakota.

Our opinion was to eliminate any non-essential business at the courthouse and minimize the amount of social interactions to prevent putting others at risk. Again, our main priority is the safety of everyone in Hanson County, citizens and employees alike.

Each office is going to limit our interactions with the public this week. We ask that if you MUST come to the courthouse to do any sort of business that you CALL FIRST to the office in which you need to meet with to make sure the office is staffed and open. We also ask during this time that there is only 1 person conducting business in each office at a time to aid in social distancing.

The Sheriff's Office will have someone staffed at all times but won't be doing any fingerprinting, pistol permits, or other non-essential items during this week. Deputies are taking extra precautions to ensure their safety as well and will be limited interaction with the public as well. Deputies will still be on patrol and responding to emergency calls. If you have any sort of emergency and someone is experiencing a cold, flu, or flu like symptoms, PLEASE NOTIFY US so we can take the necessary precaution to ensure the safety of our first responders.

FEMA will move to the Commissioners Meeting room in the Hanson County Courthouse on 1/7/2020 and be open from 9:00AM to 6:00PM Monday thru Saturday till 1/17/2020.
I would encourage anybody to contact FEMA and get signed up as a preventative measure. After the 1/17/20 cutoff date it will be much harder to get signed up.
This spring is anticipated to be on the wetter side and with not knowing the timing of the spring melt, rain accumulation and run-off it would be to your benefit to be signed up.
