How has being part of a military family shaped your learning?

Maybe moving has taught you how to make friends quickly. Maybe new places have sparked a love of geography, history, or exploring. Maybe homeschooling has given your family the flexibility to learn wherever you are.

Military life can shape the way our kids learn in so many ways, and every family’s story is different.

Family Reading Challenge Kickoff!

One of our MHA members (Taylor 👋) has a little family tradition called, "Book Club."

It’s pretty simple. For 30 minutes to an hour, everyone sits down together, grabs a book (or three), their favorite snack, and we just read!
After, we talk about what we read, what we liked, what surprised us, what we’re expecting to happen next… all the things you’d talk about in a book club, just with your family.
It’s become one of those simple things that helps everyone slow down before bedtime and spend some quality time together.

So, for this months Family Reading Challenge, why not start your own version?!
It doesn’t have to be fancy, (we all know how tough it can be to keep very little ones still this long), and everyone doesn’t have to read the same book. The goal is simply to make a little more room for reading together.

Before the schedules, lesson plans, and “what are we learning today?” questions begin… take a day to just..

Relax...
No curriculum. No checklist. No pressure.

Sleep in, have a slow breakfast, get outside, watch a movie, play a game, or do absolutely nothing.

Homeschool doesn’t have to start at full speed. Give your family a chance to enjoy the last little bit of summer and head into the new “school” year feeling refreshed.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month!

Honestly, a library might just be our favorite homeschool “cheat code!” 😉

It’s free, full of books and resources, and there’s usually so much more available than just books. From story times and homeschool programs to audiobooks, digital resources, activities, and community events, your local library can be one of your best homeschool resources.

If you haven’t already, make a library visit part of your back-to-school routine this month!
And for our military families, don’t forget to check out the library at your new duty station when you PCS. It can be a great way to find both learning resources and a new community.

Our ED had the opportunity to represent MHA at the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Resource Fair at Fort Meade!

We’re always grateful for opportunities to connect with military families, share homeschool resources, and be part of the community supporting families as they head into a new school year.

Here’s to a great year of learning, growing, and connecting! 💙

Elephants are pretty incredible, and they make a great jumping-off point for a mini homeschool lesson!

A Few Elephant Facts:
• Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth.
• Their trunks can be used for breathing, smelling, drinking, grabbing, and even communicating!
• Elephants have incredible memories and strong family bonds.
• African and Asian elephants are different species with some unique characteristics.
• Elephants communicate using sounds that can travel long distances, even through the ground!

Try a Mini Elephant Unit Study:
Science: Learn about elephant anatomy and adaptations.
Geography: Find Africa and Asia on a map and locate where different elephant species live.
Writing: If you could spend one day with an elephant, what would you want to learn?
Art: Draw, paint, or create an elephant using recycled materials.
Reading: Pick an elephant-themed picture book or nonfiction book from your local library.
