Mano a Mano Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month 2020!

As National Hispanic Heritage Month ends, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize that Mano a Mano would not exist if there was not a vast and wholly diverse Hispanic/Latino/Latinx population in the United States spread throughout all areas of our nation both urban and rural as well as our constituents in Puerto Rico. We serve and represent a minority of a minority and we want to take this time to acknowledge that our work does not exist in a vacuum that’s separated from the intersectionality of the various communities we are striving to represent: Deaf and Hard of Hearing; Hispanic/Latino/Latinx; Spanish Speakers; Sign Language Interpreters; and countless others. I also want to take the time to encourage our members to become involved with Mano by running for a seat on our board in the upcoming election. You should have already received a letter from our Nominations committee, but if you didn’t please visit our website or reach out to [email protected] by October 25th to get more information!

Please give the following video a watch featuring members of the Mano a Mano executive board expressing why our Hispanic heritage is important to us!

October 8-11, 2020
*Registration closes today, October 7 at 5pm EST*

Hi everyone! Letting you know about RID's Region I Conference. It's REALLY happening! It's scheduled October 8-11, 2020. What makes this conference so special? We have a full schedule of workshops planned with a total of 5.4 CEUs. This can happen because workshops are being offered three simultaneously. You can join one of the workshops to participate in and keep the remaining workshops. The other two workshops are yours so you can watch them later. Or, after the conference is done, all of the workshops are yours to watch at another time. You can watch them after January 2021 and get your CEUs and apply them for your cycle that includes 2021. Or, you can watch them before December 31, 2020 and get CEU credits for this year. The choice is yours to use the workshops to best match your CEU cycle. Keep in mind the expiration to be able to view the workshops is March 31, 2021. Unbelievable - an opportunity for 5.4 CEUs with one registration. This conference is open to ALL of RID, not just Region I.

Help me congratulate the newly elected FRID Board.
10/02/2020

Help me congratulate the newly elected FRID Board.

The results are in!

The Nominations & Elections committee has completed the validation process for the results of the 2020 FRID Board of Directors election. The newly elected members of the Board of Directors are listed below. They will be sworn in at the Annual Business Meeting on October 17, 2020, and will begin preparing to transition into their new positions. Their terms of service will begin January 1, 2021. Congratulations to the winning candidates!

2020 Board of Directors Election Winners
President - Kenneth Houghtaling
Vice-President of External Affairs - Laura Jackson
Secretary - Holli Tempe
Deaf Member-at-Large - James Smith
Region Representative North - Jessica Rushing

Some positions did not receive candidate nominations before the August 31, 2020 deadline but did receive write-in nominations during the voting period. Eligible write-in candidates were given the opportunity to decide whether they would be willing and able to serve in the position for which they were nominated. Eligible write-in candidates who indicated they were willing and able to serve and who also received a majority of the votes were elected to those positions.

Where eligible write-in candidates decided to remain on the ballot but no one candidate received a majority of the votes, a runoff election will be held to determine the winner of the election for that position. Where all eligible write-in candidates have withdrawn themselves from consideration, leaving the position vacant at the completion of the election cycle, the sitting board members will solicit applications for qualified members to be appointed to those positions until the next election cycle, when a special election will be held. The board positions that will be decided by runoff election or filled by board appointment are listed below.

Runoff Elections
Vice-President of Internal Affairs (Jan. 1, 2021 - Dec. 31, 2021)
Region Representative South (Jan. 1, 2021 - Dec. 31, 2022)

Positions to be Filled by Board Appointment
Treasurer (Current - Dec. 31, 2021)
Member-at-Large* (Jan. 1, 2021 - Dec. 31, 2021)
Region Representative West* (Jan. 1, 2021 - Dec. 31, 2021)

The Nominations & Elections Committee is working diligently to begin the runoff election process. Keep an eye on your email and the 2020 Elections page for more information as soon as it becomes available.

For more information on Nominations and Elections, including the nomination and election timeline, please visit our Elections page.

*These positions will be left vacant when the new officers take up their positions on January 1, 2021.

*SCAM ALERT*

Attention RID Members: As scams become more elaborate than ever before, it is essential to maintain heightened alert when dealing with any company seeking your services. We have received notification from RID members alerting us to a highly sophisticated scam involving a pharmaceutical company offering VRI employment opportunities.

As a reminder: it is a serious diversion from standard business practices to require any semblance of fund exchange as a condition of employment. The Federal Trade Commission (https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/scam-alerts) as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (https://www.fbi.gov/scams-and-safety/common-fraud-schemes) have resources you can review to familiarize yourself with common fraud schemes and current fraud alerts.

Additional resources may include discussion about potential employment with your trusted network of fellow interpreters. Should you be contacted about employment prospects and have any concern it may be a scam, please contact us at [email protected]. Thank you, #WeAreRID"

Resharing! We have received recent complaints about this.

RID Members:
We have recently been made aware of an elaborate scam that requires your attention- especially during these challenging times.

Under the guise of a reputable pharmaceutical company, the scammers will contact you, request a resume, and even conduct a remote interview. Thereafter, the scam proceeds by extending an offer for employment with the most ideal job conditions: at home. Furthermore, the scammers will then deliver you a check and ask you to deposit it so that you may purchase the necessary technology to successfully execute your duties from home. However, they supply you with “preferred” vendors who you will then make those purchases through.

Please exercise a heightened level of scrutiny when vetting potential employment— especially during these trying times. Unscrupulous individuals will use this as an opportunity to prey upon unsuspecting people. Maintain vigilance, and, “if it’s too good to be true”, it probably is.

RID extends our gratitude for the collaboration of Congressman John Rutherford and Congressman Mark Takano, co-chairs of the Congressional Deaf Caucus, in sending this letter demanding the provision of ASL interpreters.

Article:

The Congressional Deaf Caucus is fighting to have sign language interpreters at all televised White House public health press briefings.

The chairs of the caucus, Reps. Mark Takano and John Rutherford, sent a letter to Vice President Mike Pence today urging him to have sign language interpreters at all White House press briefings on COVID-19 so that deaf and hard of hearing individuals have equal access to information related to the coronavirus. It was also signed by six additional members of the Caucus, including Reps. French Hill (R-Ark.), John Larson (D-Conn.), Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa), Alan Lowenthal (D-California), Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), and Joseph Morelle (D-N.Y.).

"The use of sign language interpreters is crucial to ensuring that this unique population is provided with the same information as the rest of the country to help slow the spread, flatten the curve, and ultimately prevent loss of life," the letter reads.

I have updated my call for participants for DEAF INTERPRETERS -- certified or non certified. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy736hkL9y4 Transcript: My name is Sarah Himmelmann and I am a graduate student at St. Catherine University in the Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies and Communication Equity program. In my last year of the program, I am conducting research: Exploring the lived experiences of Deaf interpreters and how it impacts ethical decisions as Deaf interpreters in their work. As part of my research, I will conduct interviews with Deaf American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters with a minimum of five years of experience interpreting professionally. All interviews will be conducted in American Sign Language and video recorded. After I complete my research, I hope to bring to light how lived experiences of Deaf interpreters have an impact on their work. As a result, it is my hope that together we can improve interpreter training and education resulting in overall improvement in how interpreting services are delivered resulting in communication equity. If you are interested in participating in my research, please complete the survey along with the consent form: http://stkate.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aWvtggeMPx0qqrz Upon completion of the survey and consent form, I will reach out to schedule an interview appointment to participants identified using a random number generator. The interview which will be video recorded, will take approximately an hour. After the interview, I may contact you for follow up questions if needed. All information shared during the interview will remain strictly confidential as required by my Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval #1335. My research will result in a thesis that will be published and available to the public; however, your name will not be shared as a participant in this study. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your rights as a subject in my study, you may contact the Institutional Review Board (IRB) or my research advisors at: Institutional Review Board Chair Dr. John Schmitt [email protected] Institutional Review Board [email protected] 651.690.6204 Research Advisor, Dr. Eileen Forestal [email protected] Academic Research Advisor, Dr. Octavian Robinson [email protected] Thank you for your time and consideration.
