*SCAM ALERT*

Attention RID Members: As scams become more elaborate than ever before, it is essential to maintain heightened alert when dealing with any company seeking your services. We have received notification from RID members alerting us to a highly sophisticated scam involving a pharmaceutical company offering VRI employment opportunities.

As a reminder: it is a serious diversion from standard business practices to require any semblance of fund exchange as a condition of employment. The Federal Trade Commission (https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/scam-alerts) as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (https://www.fbi.gov/scams-and-safety/common-fraud-schemes) have resources you can review to familiarize yourself with common fraud schemes and current fraud alerts.

Additional resources may include discussion about potential employment with your trusted network of fellow interpreters. Should you be contacted about employment prospects and have any concern it may be a scam, please contact us at [email protected]. Thank you, #WeAreRID"

Resharing! We have received recent complaints about this.

RID Members:
We have recently been made aware of an elaborate scam that requires your attention- especially during these challenging times.

Under the guise of a reputable pharmaceutical company, the scammers will contact you, request a resume, and even conduct a remote interview. Thereafter, the scam proceeds by extending an offer for employment with the most ideal job conditions: at home. Furthermore, the scammers will then deliver you a check and ask you to deposit it so that you may purchase the necessary technology to successfully execute your duties from home. However, they supply you with “preferred” vendors who you will then make those purchases through.

Please exercise a heightened level of scrutiny when vetting potential employment— especially during these trying times. Unscrupulous individuals will use this as an opportunity to prey upon unsuspecting people. Maintain vigilance, and, “if it’s too good to be true”, it probably is.

RID extends our gratitude for the collaboration of Congressman John Rutherford and Congressman Mark Takano, co-chairs of the Congressional Deaf Caucus, in sending this letter demanding the provision of ASL interpreters.

Article:

The Congressional Deaf Caucus is fighting to have sign language interpreters at all televised White House public health press briefings.

The chairs of the caucus, Reps. Mark Takano and John Rutherford, sent a letter to Vice President Mike Pence today urging him to have sign language interpreters at all White House press briefings on COVID-19 so that deaf and hard of hearing individuals have equal access to information related to the coronavirus. It was also signed by six additional members of the Caucus, including Reps. French Hill (R-Ark.), John Larson (D-Conn.), Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa), Alan Lowenthal (D-California), Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), and Joseph Morelle (D-N.Y.).

"The use of sign language interpreters is crucial to ensuring that this unique population is provided with the same information as the rest of the country to help slow the spread, flatten the curve, and ultimately prevent loss of life," the letter reads.

Dear Region III Members,

After much consideration, it saddens us to announce the cancellation of the 2020 RID Region III Conference. Due to this pandemic and the uncertainty it has caused, the planning committee, with support from RID, felt it was in our best interest to cancel. The efforts and time that the planning committee members have put into this conference will not go unnoticed, as the OCRID board cannot thank them enough!

If you have already registered, your payment will be fully refunded by April 18th.

More information to come from RID.

Stay healthy and safe!

Thank you for your understanding,
2020 OCRID Board and Conference Planning Committee

The RiD Board was looking forward to their face to face meeting this week in Alexandria, VA. Unfortunately, a number of members of the Board are experiencing increased difficulties traveling due to the coronavirus. We are also aware of an increased number of closures and shut-downs that are impacting people and their families in a variety of unexpected ways. Some members arrived early - others were supposed to arrive today and tonight.

As a result, at this time the Board meeting is cancelled. We do not have any idea of when the meeting(s) may be rescheduled. We are focused first on making sure that everyone is safe at home.

We will keep the membership informed of the Board’s progress. Our thoughts are with you: the members, and the Deaf, hard of hearing, and DeafBlind community we all serve.

I have updated my call for participants for DEAF INTERPRETERS -- certified or non certified. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy736hkL9y4 Transcript: My name is Sarah Himmelmann and I am a graduate student at St. Catherine University in the Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies and Communication Equity program. In my last year of the program, I am conducting research: Exploring the lived experiences of Deaf interpreters and how it impacts ethical decisions as Deaf interpreters in their work. As part of my research, I will conduct interviews with Deaf American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters with a minimum of five years of experience interpreting professionally. All interviews will be conducted in American Sign Language and video recorded. After I complete my research, I hope to bring to light how lived experiences of Deaf interpreters have an impact on their work. As a result, it is my hope that together we can improve interpreter training and education resulting in overall improvement in how interpreting services are delivered resulting in communication equity. If you are interested in participating in my research, please complete the survey along with the consent form: http://stkate.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aWvtggeMPx0qqrz Upon completion of the survey and consent form, I will reach out to schedule an interview appointment to participants identified using a random number generator. The interview which will be video recorded, will take approximately an hour. After the interview, I may contact you for follow up questions if needed. All information shared during the interview will remain strictly confidential as required by my Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval #1335. My research will result in a thesis that will be published and available to the public; however, your name will not be shared as a participant in this study. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your rights as a subject in my study, you may contact the Institutional Review Board (IRB) or my research advisors at: Institutional Review Board Chair Dr. John Schmitt [email protected] Institutional Review Board [email protected] 651.690.6204 Research Advisor, Dr. Eileen Forestal [email protected] Academic Research Advisor, Dr. Octavian Robinson [email protected] Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will participate in my research if you fit the criteria. If not, I hope you will share this recruitment inquiry with someone who may fit the criteria. Sarah Himmelmann [email protected]

Cradle of Hope Adoption Center, a nonprofit adoption agency with almost 30 years of experience, is searching for an adoptive family for Shelly, an 8.5 year old deaf girl who has been living in a Chinese orphanage since she was a few months old. She is described as sensitive and smart with a ready smile. She loves to eat, isn’t picky about her food, and loves new toys and playing outside. Shelly attended a school for the deaf in China last year where she worked hard and finished her homework carefully. Now she is attending school in the orphanage. Shelly loves to read. She doesn’t speak but she understands sign language and facial expressions and finds ways to express herself. The orphanage reports that Shelly is particularly smart, has great learning ability and her academic performance is among the top students. She also stays active and likes to exercise. Can Shelly be your daughter? Eligible families are single women or married couples, age 30 – 58, who are in reasonably good health and have no more than 5 minor children in the home. One two-week trip to China is required to complete Shelly’s adoption. International adoption is not inexpensive. We have a $5000 grant to help Shelly get adopted. Many of our families have been successful in obtaining adoption grants from the organizations listed here: https://cradlehope.org/financing-adoption-expenses. Some families have applied for a few grants and received funding in the $2000 - $5000 range. Other families have submitted grant applications to many funding organizations and have covered more than half of their adoption expenses, and a few families have received enough grants to fund their adoptions completely. Also, the federal adoption tax credit, currently $13,570, could benefit your family after your adoption is completed. For more information on adopting Shelly, please email [email protected].
Come join us! We have a non-member rate as well! Two great workshops for $45!!! Two great presenters!!! .6 CEUs!!!
