Greetings to Member Sections Leadership from RID DMAL & MAL

https://youtu.be/GOyI_1y7jbU

Hello Member Sections!

We are Phyllis "Dora" Rifkin, DMAL, and Traci Ison, MAL, and we serve on the RID Board of Directors.

We are reaching out to you to connect with you. We are thrilled to partner in our roles, operating as a team, representing you on the RID Board of Directors. We are committed to ensure that each member section's goals, intentions, and challenges are heard. We have been and will be reaching out individually to connect with the Member Section Chairs if active, (or other member section leadership if the member section is active but without a chairperson at this time). Be on the look out for our communication!

There have been big changes within RID recently including a completely new Board, and many new representatives, and other leadership throughout the organization. Since beginning our position on September 1, 2021, we have been learning a lot— reviewing & organizing content, receiving training in our RID Board service roles, and communicating with past Board leadership. We are clear we are not yet completely familiar with it all and we ask for your patience as we navigate our roles. We are committed to an environment of transparency.

We want you to know we are here for YOU. We welcome and encourage your communication. Feel free to reach out to us by email; Dora at [email protected] and/or Traci at [email protected].

We are committed to responding within 1-2 business days, but if you do not receive a response, we might have accidentally overlooked your email and request that you please do follow up. For more in-depth communication, we request you set up a conversation through a call or virtual face-to-face meeting with either or both of us so we can fully get your communication and commitment.

We acknowledge you, Member Section leaders, for your bold leadership. Thank you for making a difference with the Deaf community and interpreting industry.

- Dora & Traci

Hello!!

Please Spread the Word to Washington DC/DC-MD-VA-area folks you think may be interested in this project! We're in need for both Deaf and hearing people to play the roles of consumers in our scenarios.

CASLI, (The Center for the Assessment of Sign Language Interpretation), LLC, is seeking acting talents and Certified Deaf interpreters for various roles in our National Interpreter Certification performance exams.

We are seeking both Deaf and hearing actors to play various parts in scenarios that will be used to assess candidates interpreting skills for their national certification examination. These roles vary and will be of Deaf consumers, hearing consumers, ASL-English Interpreters and professionals in general community settings that involve ASL and or ASL-English interpretation.

Project Dates/Duration/Location: We will be filming over four days from Friday, October 1, 2020 to Monday, October 4, 2021. Each scenario will be filmed during a half-day block and we will be filming in the Alexandria, VA area.

Eligibility: To be eligible to participate in this project, interpreters or talent must either already be certified under the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf OR agree to not pursue ASL-English Interpreter certification or Certified Deaf Interpreter certification using any CASLI exams. Talent will be compensated for their time depending on their role.

Compensation will be paid on a "per half day" basis. Compensation is paid on a sliding scale ranging from $60 for a role with no acting/words (e.g., an extra) to $200 per half day for roles that involve dialogue. Again, we will be filming in the Alexandria, VA area and, unless otherwise agreed, will not compensate actors for any travel or lodging expenses.

Agreements: All actors will be required to sign a legally binding nondisclosure agreement and media release form prior to beginning any work with us. For payment processing, actors will be required to submit a W-9 form to us, as well.

----

Roles include:

14 Hearing people/consumers. These roles are of varying ages, mostly middle-aged adults, male or female, and of culturally/ethnically diverse backgrounds. Some roles do NOT require knowledge of ASL, while some roles do.

14 Deaf people/consumers - These roles are of mostly middle-aged adults, male or female, and of culturally/ethnically diverse backgrounds. We have two roles that involve use of a sign language other than ASL (LSM, etc.).

3 Certified Deaf Interpreters. Must be nationally certified, male or female, ages early 20's- to-late adulthood, and of culturally/ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Contact: Please contact Sean Furman at [email protected], or by calling VP 571-257-4761 with any questions or if you are interested!

In your email to [email protected], include the following:

Please send a photo/headshot of yourself

Indicate your language fluency or which language(s). If you can, please send any video sample of yourself signing or talking (please no more than 2 minutes)

Describe any experience you may have in acting, if any (not required), and

Provide your general availability for October 1 – 4th weekend (e.g. available on Saturday, but not Friday, etc).

----

Please also feel free to share this post with people you think may be interested in working on this project with us. We are especially looking to include members from underrepresented communities (BIPOC, LGBTQ, disabilities, seniors, etc.).

----

Again, if you have any questions, please contact Sean Furman at [email protected] or VP 571-257-4761

Hello, my name is Adam Spannagel and I am a current graduate student at St. Catherine University. I am currently conducting research for my thesis aiming to learn about how our own speech patterns and cognitive processing infiltrates ASL to English interpretations provided by ASL interpreters. Certified interpreters holding state recognized certifications (e.g. BEI, RID, CI/CT) are sought for participation. Participants in this study will be asked to provide an ASL to English interpretation for a pre-recorded presentation on nature photography. The interpretation will be recorded with audio and video files being saved and utilized for a linguistic analysis. Prior to involvement, individuals will be asked to fill out a demographics survey at http://stkate.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cHiXNRJAetyu8El. While demographics are collected, personal information will not be shared. Files will be stored on a private external hard drive and saved to a locked iCloud file. The analysis and subsequent thesis will be made anonymous as each participant chosen will be assigned a random number, removing any identifying information. By December 31, 2021, all recordings will be destroyed in order to maintain confidentiality. Participation in this research is completely voluntary. If interested in participating or if you have any additional questions, I can be reached at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your consideration, Adam Spannagel.

I have updated my call for participants for DEAF INTERPRETERS -- certified or non certified. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy736hkL9y4 Transcript: My name is Sarah Himmelmann and I am a graduate student at St. Catherine University in the Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies and Communication Equity program. In my last year of the program, I am conducting research: Exploring the lived experiences of Deaf interpreters and how it impacts ethical decisions as Deaf interpreters in their work. As part of my research, I will conduct interviews with Deaf American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters with a minimum of five years of experience interpreting professionally. All interviews will be conducted in American Sign Language and video recorded. After I complete my research, I hope to bring to light how lived experiences of Deaf interpreters have an impact on their work. As a result, it is my hope that together we can improve interpreter training and education resulting in overall improvement in how interpreting services are delivered resulting in communication equity. If you are interested in participating in my research, please complete the survey along with the consent form: http://stkate.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aWvtggeMPx0qqrz Upon completion of the survey and consent form, I will reach out to schedule an interview appointment to participants identified using a random number generator. The interview which will be video recorded, will take approximately an hour. After the interview, I may contact you for follow up questions if needed. All information shared during the interview will remain strictly confidential as required by my Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval #1335. My research will result in a thesis that will be published and available to the public; however, your name will not be shared as a participant in this study. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your rights as a subject in my study, you may contact the Institutional Review Board (IRB) or my research advisors at: Institutional Review Board Chair Dr. John Schmitt [email protected] Institutional Review Board [email protected] 651.690.6204 Research Advisor, Dr. Eileen Forestal [email protected] Academic Research Advisor, Dr. Octavian Robinson [email protected] Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will participate in my research if you fit the criteria. If not, I hope you will share this recruitment inquiry with someone who may fit the criteria. Sarah Himmelmann [email protected]
