Computer CORE
Thank you for helping put computers in the hands of Computer CORE students as we begin distance learning! #Spring2ACTion
Improving communities through service. The Neighborhood Improvement Corp (NIC), centered in Alexandria, VA, provides a point of contact for individuals volunteering to assist local nonprofits with events, galas, cleanups, and other activities.
(2)
When NIC is volunteering, NIC members will be able to greet other volunteers on site to welcome and orient them to the volunteer activity on behalf of the host organization. Groups of skilled individuals may also partner through NIC to offer low-cost, fee-for-service assistance to nonprofits such as fundraising, event management & database assistance.
Mission: Helping individuals and groups to give back to the community by making volunteering easier and reducing the burden on nonprofits of accepting volunteer and low-cost, fee-for-service assistance.

A great way to donate to Computer CORE: If you are 70 and a half, local financial advisor Adron Krekeler has a great article on how to avoid taxes on your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA. He reminds us that a 2015 change in the tax code allows tax free contributions to non-profits of up to $100,000 for Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD). Adron gives this advice:
Before spreading your largesse, I would urge you to carefully consider the impact a large charitable gift can have. Giving $5,000 to each of five or ten charities is nice, but the impact of a $25,000 or $50,000 gift to one charity can create huge organizational growth and power some serious good.
Thanks Adron!! To find out how to make small or large contributions to Computer CORE contact Donna Walker James, Executive Director at [email protected].

WIRED Alexandria: Is Our Historic City Living in the Past?
Neighboring jurisdictions offer dark fibre, cable/broadband choices and widespread public Wi-Fi hot spots important to today’s businesses and young people. Can Alexandria compete? Technology, especially when used to move information, is a growing component of daily life. Access to (and choices of) technology features like broadband internet and wi-fi are considerations for both business and millennials when they consider where to locate their homes and offices. With neighboring jurisdictions offering features like dark fibre, competitive choice among cable/broadband providers and better public wi-fi hotspot coverage, does Alexandria have what it takes to move into the future? As part of a multi-jurisdictional metropolis, Alexandria has to compete with its neighbors to attract both business and families to the city. It is worth examining the ways in which we are competing successfully and unsuccessfully with an eye on what we can do better.

Volunteer for First Night Alexandria
In only a few weeks local shops, restaurants, historic sites and buildings in Old Town Alexandria will turn into performance venues to showcase local talent and celebrate the New Year. It's fun, affordable, safe and family friendly. We have twenty-nine performance venues this year, as well as the Fun Hunt and children’s activities in the afternoon. All these locations need volunteers. We also need help from those who are familiar with iPads (or equivalents) to help us manage our admission badge sales.
Volunteer information is right on our website: www.firstnightalexandria.org/get-involved/volunteers. You can sign up from there and take the new online training. Take a moment to like us on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/FirstNightAlexandriaVA), follow us on Twitter (http://twitter.com/fnalexandria), send us a text (or call us) at 703-408-4483, or send us a message via [email protected].
Uh oh, did you almost forget to sign up for Agenda Alexandria on Monday night?! There was so much excitement and traffic with Spring2Action. Congrats all! Now, come hear pros and cons to more hotels in Alexandria. Monday night at the Hermitage. Reserve a spot at www.agendaalexandria.org.
Let's Spend the Night Together: Is Alexandria's Hotel Boom a Boon or Bane?
With plans to build hotels at both ends of the Waterfront redevelopment, on Prince Street and on Eisenhower to serve the National Science Foundation, our city is embarking on the biggest increase in hotel beds in its history. Hotels can be very beneficial for city revenue as they provide large dollars from non-residents while demanding very little in city services. They can also be very unpopular with their prospective residential neighbors. This is an opportunity to learn about what is coming and examine whether the city is too welcoming, not welcoming enough, or "just right" in welcoming hotels to Alexandria.

The Optimist Club of Alexandria Foundation is the charitable foundation of the Optimist Club of Alexandria (noonday). Through the Foundation, the Optimist Club creates bi-weekly opportunities for Alexandria young people to demonstrate their talents in music, singing, writing and speaking, as well as their academic successes. The Foundation covers the cost of cash awards to young people, complimentary lunch for them, their teachers and family members, and contest entry fees where needed. The Club also contributes, through the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, to a college scholarship for a student in the T.C. Williams International Academy. We also acknowledge youth in vocational education and ROTC and honor our public safety officers. We are always looking for more Optimists, united in the spirit of giving back and encouraging young people.
This is our first year with Spring2ACTion and we'd greatly appreciate a contribution from our members and friends in support of providing performance opportunities and recognition for our City's young people.

Good advice from my neighborhood listserve to those who want to volunteer with the family on Thanksgiving day:
"In my experience with organizations like the ones you are inquiring about is that "everyone" wants to visit on that day. The organizations have plenty of interest on that day (and, in fact, many have been 'booked' for months). Everyone shows that morning and then no one's there the next day. What they'd really like is help the other 364 days out of the year.
They welcome and value your volunteer efforts, but please consider visiting on another day. Or visit an organization that is not inundated on that particular day."
Benefit youth for $25 by attending the following fashion show event. Contributions can also be made directly to the Optimist Club of Alexandria Foundation, PO Box 795, Alexandria, VA 22313. The Optimist Club of Alexandria is holding a fashion show fundraiser at the Draper’s & Damon’s shop in Fairfax on Saturday, October 25. Women members of the Club will model Fall fashions. Tickets are $25 paid at the door. The entire ticket price will go to the Optimist Club of Alexandria Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 charitable organization under the Internal Revenue Code. The Optimist Club will use the proceeds for its projects that benefit the youth of Alexandria. Attendees will receive discounts on purchases at the store, door prizes and a delicious lunch. Please tell all your friends and family members!
