Douglas MacArthur Book Fair Week Starts THIS Week!
For the first time in three years, MacArthur is returning to an in-person, indoor book fair: Tuesday, October 18 through Thursday, October 20. The Scholastic Book Fair is also a PTA fundraiser, as we receive 25% of all sales, which allows the PTA to support literacy at MacArthur by allowing all children to have their own books through All For Books and Reading is Fundamental (RIF).
If you would like for your student to have an eWallet account set up (so that they don't have to worry about bringing money to school), please visit https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/parent-how-it-works.html?fairID=5173983. You will need to sign up for a Scholastic account to use this feature.
Family Shopping (in person)
We will have two after school opportunities at the Taney Avenue location for families to shop with their students. The Fair will be open for students from 8:30AM to 2:30PM Tuesday through Thursday during their regularly assigned Library Encore time. Then, families will have the following available date/times to shop together after school:
Tuesday 2:30 to 6:30pm
Thursday 2:30 to 8:00pm (PTA meeting is in person this evening)
Virtual Shopping (online fair)
Starting October 17, families can also shop at our virtual fair. You can have access to a wide selection of books beyond what is physically at our fair. This allows grandparents and other family and friends to also buy books for our students, and we receive the same amount of funds as we would in person. If you want to shop from the convenience of your house, please visit https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/douglasmacarthurelemsch1
Visit our school's homepage to get the latest Book Fair news, shop our Online Fair, and more!

We ask you to consider weighing in on an important safety issue impacting our school. Please consider acting by September 26.
The City has received a request from the Clover College Park Civic Association to install a four-way stop at the intersection on Janney’s Lane and West Taylor Run Parkway. This is along several students' walk/bike routes. This project will go to public hearing at the Traffic and Parking Board meeting on September 26. If you have comments, please email [email protected].
Agan, we invite you to share your thoughts directly to Alexandria City on this matter. Thank you!

Good morning Douglas Macarthur Elementary School PTA community! As we enter in our LAST (!!!) week of summer break, things are getting moving in anticipation of a great school year. Two items of note:
First: please see Principal Hairston’s email message from yesterday with lots of details about open house, supplies, and other prep. If you didn’t receive it let us know so we can pass along.
Second: we want to ensure a supportive start to the year for all our students, including special needs. If you are part of our special needs community or a friend of the community and want to connect with others please reach out to Liz Doughty [email protected].
Thanks!
Hi MacArthur families - we wanted to get a quick note out about ParentSquare. This is ACPS’s new communications platform. You should have received sign up instructions last week. We encourage you to sign up so you can stay up to date on alerts from ACPS, MacArthur, and your child’s teachers.

With the school year winding down, we'd be remiss not to give a major shout-out to Jamie Durham Pfister, our PTA President. Jamie worked tirelessly - while also running a full household and even switching jobs this year - and did more behind the scenes for MacArthur than we could possibly ever list out entirely. If you see this wonder woman, please thank her!
Don’t miss out! Paper orders due to office this week, but you can still order online until 6/30! We worked with all grade levels to customize supply lists! www.educationalproducts.com/ShopPacks
