We received a slightly overdue return to Burke last week: a copy of 'The Lord God Made Them All' by James Herriot, last checked out in 1983. We think this is a great time to remind everyone that, while we no longer charge late fees, we prefer books to be returned at least within the decade they were loaned.

As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, Americans are grappling with how to honestly examine our country’s history and make sense of how it applies to the world today. The story of the Alexandria, Virginia library sit-in of 1939, the first recorded sit-in to demand racial integration, offers a fresh chance to explore our past. Thanks to new grant funding, efforts are underway to build online exhibits, digitize materials, and engage communities to talk about this little-known story.

Hear from a panel of experts, including Executive Director of the Alexandria Library, Rose Dawson. Link to register below.

This community event is free and open to all!

Join us on Saturday, September 19 for the fourth annual Alexandria Library Black Family Reunion. The event aims to bring neighborhoods together and help fill gaps in the documented history of Alexandria’s African American community.

We are asking current and former residents to bring yearbooks, photographs, old event flyers, or programs that can be digitized. Better still, attendees can simply sit down and be videotaped sharing a brief oral history.

Like any reunion, of course it will be a party! Attendees will enjoy a variety of food trucks, music and dancing, games for kids and adults, and Black Family Reunion t-shirts.

RSVP to receive updates. Link below.
