National Public Health Week theme of the day: Education

NCHPH hosted a four-part interactive learning collaborative about the AMIGAS “Ayudando a Las Mujeres con Información, Guía y Amor para su Salud” or “Helping Women with Information, Guidance, and Love for Their Health” curriculum, which is an evidence-based, bilingual health education intervention program designed to train community health workers (CHW) or “promotoras” to increase cervical cancer screening rates among Hispanic women.

National Public Health Week theme of the day: Violence Prevention

Social, economic, and environmental factors, such as safe and healthy environments play a large role in determining the health status of public housing residents. Health Centers located in or immediately accessible to public housing developments are more likely to be in areas with higher rates of violent crime, defined as murder, rape, robbery, and assault. As a result, Health Centers serving public housing residents have developed violence prevention and intervention programs critical to improving the physical and mental health of their patients. The purpose of this webinar was to present findings from a case study report that documented best practices and examples of violence prevention and intervention programs in public housing communities.

National Public Health Week theme of the day: Maternal Health

Teen pregnancy and HPV vaccination continue to be a pressing issue for low-income populations. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection which is the cause of several cancers, including cervical cancer, and genital warts. Although cervical cancer can be prevented through screening, this cancer persists in the US.

More recently, HPV vaccination has the potential to decrease the burden of HPV-related disease among young HPV-unexposed adolescents.

This learning collaborative by NCHPH explores the role of community health workers in teen pregnancy prevention and HPV vaccine promotion in teenage girls living in public housing.

Call your nearest health center to find out the availability of COVID-19 screening and testing. Health Centers can assess whether a patient needs further testing, which may be done over the phone or using telehealth.
