This week was another wonderful and active week at Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA), filled with community engagement, learning, and celebration.

Congratulations to Jane Hughes and Gretchyn Meinken, SSA Board Chair, who were honored at the Chamber ALX 40 Over 40 Awards, recognizing their outstanding contributions and leadership in our community.

At Alate, Wilder hosted a Hispanic Community Potluck, bringing people together to celebrate culture, connection, and community.

SSA staff members Olivia, Iris, and Tesfaye attended a presentation at Alate by Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) on Boosting Your Brain Power, where participants learned practical strategies for supporting cognitive health and wellness as we age.

Later in the week, Olivia and Tesfaye attended a presentation by the Alexandria Chief of Police, who shared upcoming priorities and plans for the year, providing valuable insight into public safety initiatives and community partnerships.

Today, Olivia and Tesfaye participated in an art program at Claridge House with Upcycle Creative Reuse Center, where residents enjoyed a fun and creative opportunity to express themselves through art while promoting sustainability.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this week such a success. We look forward to continuing to connect, learn, and serve our community in the weeks ahead! 💙

We're excited to recognize Jessica and her son, Grant, as our Volunteers of the Week! 💙

Grant, a high school student, and his mom, Jessica, decided that becoming Information Corner volunteers would be a meaningful way to give back to the community. Together, they currently maintain two Information Corners, helping ensure that important resources and information are easily accessible to those who need them.

Their dedication, reliability, and willingness to serve make a tremendous difference. We are so grateful for the time and effort they invest in supporting our mission and helping connect our community with valuable information.

Thank you, Jessica and Grant, for all that you do! We are lucky to have you as part of our volunteer family. 💙👏✨

This week’s SSA Connection highlights the importance of creativity through artist Joe Whale’s story about how doodling helped launch his career, shares a tasty summer corn muffin recipe, and features a 10-minute low-impact exercise video for seniors. It also provides information about the August 12 total solar eclipse, upcoming community events including an Alzheimer’s caregiver support group and a library painting club, and invites Alexandria residents to help honor local centenarians at a special celebration on September 8 by submitting applications by August 18.
