Virginia’s New Laws on L.G.B.T. Protections, Guns and Marijuana Reflect a Shift in Power

"The leftward transformation of Virginia since President Trump was elected crescendoed over the weekend, with the governor signing into law protections for L.G.B.T. residents, gun background checks, no jail time for simple marijuana possession and early voting."

The measures came about after Democrats took control of the Legislature for the first time in more than two decades last year.

During times of crisis, nonprofits stand on the frontline to protect the voiceless and vulnerable; but, often economic downturns hurt their ability to stay in the fight when they are needed most. Today is #Spring2ACTion, Alexandria's day of giving back to our local charities. If you are able, I hope you will join me in supporting their critical work today! https://bit.ly/2RkROfb

Virginia Medical Reserve Corps

Whether you are a retired medical professional or just want to help, you can help as a member of the Virginia Medical Reserve Corps. Thanks to all those who are already helping in hospitals, senior facilities, clinics and our essential workers too!

Wondering what you can do to help your community during this time of crisis?

Today Governor of Virginia issued a call for an additional 30,000 medical and non-medical volunteers to treat the rising number of COVID-19 patients in Virginia’s health care system.

Over 13,000 Virginians have already volunteered to serve through the VA Medical Reserve Corps. Learn more about how to join the fight against COVID-19 at www.vamrc.org.

Governor of Virginia

These common-sense, effective policies will help keep Virginians safe from the scourge of gun violence -- which claims more than three lives in our state every day.

Starting July 1, Virginia will have background checks on all firearm sales, an Extreme Risk Protective Order, a one-handgun-a-month rule, and other commonsense gun safety measures.

I am proud to sign these new laws. They will save lives, period.

Big news from Governor of Virginia Ralph Northam
-- Other highlights:

1. Restaurants will be allowed to deliver mixed beverages effective Thursday at midnight, and ABC license renewal will be suspended.

2. Major PPE orders have been secured for our healthcare workers.

3. The Virginia Department of Health is working to capture racial and demographic data of the virus to battle inequity in healthcare

Today, I announced plans to postpone our May and June elections due to the #COVID19 crisis. Virginians shouldn't be forced to choose between protecting their health and exercising their right to vote. As the sun sets, I, along with millions of others around the world, will celebrate Passover: the Jewish people’s exodus from Egypt.

Tonight many of us are reciting the Haggadah alone for the first time. A holiday we traditionally spend with family, where we welcome a stranger to the table, will feel empty for many. But Passover is an expression of the community around us, even when we cannot see it.

I hope you will join me in reflecting on the struggles that our neighbors across the world face and remembering that the pain of separation can be a reminder of the many blessings we have.

Wishing you joy during this time of struggle.

Thank you Bernie Sanders for your passionate and relentless work to drive our party towards progressive values

I am thankful for every candidate who brought diverse perspectives and coalitions to the race and proud that we have a candidate as talented and experienced as Joe Biden to unite behind for the general election.

Many nonprofits are working on the frontline of the current public health crisis, but that work isn't possible without support. Especially in times of crisis, charitable giving often decreases as we tighten our belts, but this is when they need our support most. Spring2ACTion early giving has begun, and the day of giving is April 15. I hope you'll consider supporting local charities this year. https://bit.ly/2RkROfb
