The Alfred Police Department is proud to announce that its officers attended the Annual New York State STOP-DWI and Mothers Against Drunk Driving Recognition Awards Banquet held in Albany. During the ceremony, the department was honored to receive the Department of the Year Award, recognizing its ongoing commitment to preventing impaired driving and promoting public safety.

The department was also recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, and the New York State Governor's Office for its continued dedication to roadway safety.

Chief VanSkiver was invited to serve as the keynote speaker, where he addressed the ongoing challenges of driving while intoxicated across New York State and reflected on his distinguished career. Chief VanSkiver is recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award and currently leads New York State in DWI arrests.

The department extends its pride and appreciation to all officers for their continued efforts and commitment to keeping the community safe.

Alfred Village Police Department Arrest

On March 6, 2026, at approximately 11:40 PM, the Alfred Village Police Department arrested 35-year-old Tyrone Young Jr. of Rochester, NY following a traffic stop on Glen Street in the Village of Alfred.

During the investigation, officers determined that Young was allegedly operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license and was suspected of operating the vehicle while under the influence of drugs.

Police report that Young attempted to flee on foot but was quickly taken into custody.
A search incident from the arrest allegedly revealed approximately 74 grams of co***ne, 38 grams of Molly (ecstasy), several oxycodone pills, and a quantity of ma*****na. Officers also recovered scales and packaging materials at the scene.

Young was processed and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 2nd Degree (Class A-II Felony) and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. He was also issued several traffic citations, including failure to keep right, unlicensed operator, and failure to use a designated lane.

Young was transported to the Allegany County Jail to await arraignment.

The Alfred Police Department continues to investigate this incident, and additional charges may be filed at a later date.

The Alfred Police Department was assisted by the Alfred University Police Department and the Alfred Fire Department.

The Alfred Police Department, ACASA, the Allegany County Sheriff's Office, and Partners for Prevention in Allegany County have partnered to move the pill drop box that was at the former Alfred Pharmacy to the Alfred Police Department at 7 West University Street. Transferring the drop box to the Alfred Police Department continues to allow community members to be able to dispose of their unwanted or unused medications safely and properly. All collected medications are taken to an incinerating location by the Allegany County Sheriff's Office, which makes them harmless to the environment. PPAC would like to give "Thanks" to Tony Graziano for housing the drop box for so many years and to the Alfred Police Department for continuing to offer this opportunity to the community. The Alfred Police Department is proud to welcome our newest full-time officer, Logan Graham! Logan, age 25, will officially begin his full-time duties with us this January. He recently attended the Alfred State Police Academy in Spring 2025, where he demonstrated dedication, professionalism, and a strong commitment to serving our community.

We’re excited to have him join the team and look forward to the positive impact he will make here in Alfred. Please join us in welcoming Officer Graham to the department! 👮‍♂️

Today the Allegany County STOP DWI program in conjunction with NYS STOP DWI recognized Alfred Police Officer, Alexandra Rosell as the “Top Cop” in Allegany County for DWI enforcement. Chief Joshua VanSkiver and Officer Rosell attended the County legislative meeting where Officer Rosell received the award. Congratulations to Officer Rosell, keep up the good work!!

The Alfred Police Department would like the community to be aware of an ongoing computer scam, that targets people over the age of 50. The scam consists of having your computer, tablet, or devise locked and wanting you to call a number to get it unlocked. Once you call this number, you will speak with a representative who will want all of the computer infomation and then want you to pay with a Credit Card to have "protection". Once they have all of your information, they will then start getting access to your accounts! If you feel like you’re being scammed, please contact the APD before providing any information over the phone.
