City of Algoma preps beaches for Memorial Day weekend with new machine

The City of Algoma has starting using the Barber Surf Rake that was purchased this year thanks to a grant from the Fund for Lake Michigan and additional contributions from the Algoma Tourism & Promotion Committee and the Community Improvement of Algoma group. The Friends of Crescent Beach will also contribute to this important addition to the City’s equipment by helping with the first year’s maintenance costs. We hope this surf rake will keep Crescent Beach clean and looking great for years to come!

Check out the stories done by Fox 11 News of Green Bay and see the surf rake in action:

Coastal Resiliency Plan: Community Survey

*Another opportunity to help our community!*
We are asking for community members and visitors of Algoma to take this brief survey so that Bay-Lake Reginal Planning Commission can get information about our shoreline here in Algoma and how we can plan for coastal resiliency.
Thank you!

Hello! Thank you for your interest in the Coastal Resiliency Plan for the counties of Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan and the lakeshore municipalities within these counties. There aren’t too many people that like to look at negative posts on Facebook, especially on a Monday morning. But I guarantee there are more people that don’t like to look at soooo much garbage at Perry Field.
Sadly, last spring we had to lock the gates for a period of time because of all the trash on the ground. This affected people that like to use the park and don’t litter. It really didn’t seem fair. The garbage we’re seeing is definitely concentrated right by the basketball courts. If this problem is not taken care of we will be removing the basketball hoops for a period of time.
We can do better than this! There is a can right next to the court. Put your garbage in it.

We'd like to thank students from Algoma Elementary School for all their hard work in picking up garbage for their Community Clean-Up Day. They focused their efforts on Crescent Beach, the library, Perry Field, around City Hall and their school. The students reported that they found all sort of trash and noticed that, unfortunatly, they found a majority around walking paths. Most common items are coffee cups, lids, masks and cigarette butts. Let's all do our part to make sure none of the trash we carry or need to dispose of doesn't ends up on the ground but in a garbage can instead.
THANK YOU, ALGOMA ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AND TEACHERS for caring about our community!
Also, thank you to Friends of Crescent Beach for providing the cleaning supplies to the students.

In January 2021, the Algoma Parks and Recreation Committee began a Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan update. A survey was available in March 2021 to gain insights into the issues, concerns, and opportunities. Those survey results were summarized and compiled into this final survey to gain the priorities of the community. This survey will be open for two weeks, so please take some time to tell us what you think the priorities of the Parks and Recreation should be. Thanks!

This past week we were very excited to welcome back students to the Youth Club from Algoma Elementary School. It has been a long, quiet year at the Club, thanks to Covid. 😒
The 5th and 6th grade classes took turns to coming down to play and try out the new food cooked on our Ovention Oven. This commercial-style air fryer replaced our old deep fryer. It seems like the new food got the thumbs up from the kids! The oven was purchased with funds generously donated by various groups and community members from over the years. Thank you!

**The Youth Club is not open on the weekends at this time. With the schools trying hard to keep the students in their “pods”, we are supporting that effort by staying closed. Stay tuned to our page for announcements on when we will be able to open up.**

There are cones on the rink where there is no ice on the asphalt. We ask that those do not get moved for everyone’s safety. The lights will be turned on during the evening until 10:00 pm.
Have fun skating!
