Honored & Grateful!

The Algona Fire Department is proud and truly honored to be selected for induction into the Kossuth County Racing Hall of Fame "Class of 2026" for our contributions to track safety at the Kossuth County Speedway.

This recognition represents decades of dedication by our members who have spent countless hours at the track, standing ready to respond, ensuring the safety of drivers, crews, fans, and officials, and supporting local racing in our community.

We want to thank the Racing Hall of Fame committee for this incredible honor, the Kossuth County Speedway for their continued partnership, and all the past and present members of the Algona Fire Department whose commitment made this possible. It has been a privilege to serve, and we are proud to be a part of the Speedway’s history.

🚨 Carbon Monoxide Detector Reminder – Basements Matter 🚨

We’ve responded to several recent calls where homes had a carbon monoxide (CO) detector on the main floor, but none in the basement. This is a serious safety concern.

🏠 Why the basement is critical:
Most homes have gas-burning appliances located in the basement, such as:
• Furnaces
• Water heaters
• Boilers

If one of these appliances malfunctions, carbon monoxide can build up in the basement first and spread upward through the home. A detector only on the first floor may not alert you early enough.

📍 CO Detector placement recommendations:
✔️ Basement (especially near, but not directly next to, fuel-burning appliances)
✔️ Every level of the home
✔️ Outside sleeping areas

🚫 Do NOT rely on a single detector upstairs to protect your entire home.

🔋 Quick reminders:
• Test detectors monthly
• Replace batteries yearly
• Replace units per manufacturer guidelines (typically 5–10 years)

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless — you won’t know it’s there until it’s too late. Proper detector placement, especially in the basement, can save lives.

🔥 Stay safe, Algona. 🔥

🚒❄️ Algona Fire Department Snow PSA ❄️🚒

Hey Algona… we love snow as much as the next Iowan, but our fire hydrants are starting to play extreme hide-and-seek — and they’re winning. 😅

If you’ve got a hydrant in your yard that’s currently buried deeper than your driveway after last week’s storm, do us a favor:
Dig it out and give it some breathing room (about 3 feet).

Why?
Because in an emergency, firefighters don’t have time to play “Where’s Waldo: Hydrant Edition.”

Help us help you — free the hydrants! 🔥🧊
Thanks, Algona! Stay warm out there. 🧤

🚨 Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Reminder 🚨
Just two weeks ago, the Algona Fire Department shared important safety tips in the Algona Newspaper about the growing risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are now found in everything from phones and laptops to power tools and e-bikes — and while they’re incredibly useful, they can also be dangerous if not handled properly.
This weekend, our neighbors in Le Mars experienced a devastating house fire believed to have started from lithium batteries that exploded while charging. Two firefighters were injured during the response, and the home was declared unlivable. Thankfully, no lives were lost — but this is a stark reminder of how serious these incidents can be.
🔥 Please take a moment to review your charging habits:

Only use manufacturer-approved chargers.
Never charge batteries on beds, couches, or near flammable materials.
Avoid overcharging or leaving devices plugged in overnight.
Store batteries in cool, dry places.
Replace damaged or swollen batteries immediately.

We’ll link the full story below — and we urge everyone to stay informed and stay safe. If you have questions about lithium-ion battery safety, reach out to the Algona Fire Department. We’re here to help.
