As local schools prepare for students to return, area drivers are reminded to educate themselves on school bus safety. The number of drivers passing a school bus unlawfully is increasing in Kossuth, which places students and all drivers in danger.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Kossuth County drivers committed 44 bus safety violations in the 2025-2026 school year, compared to 12 violations the previous year. Calhoun County had one violation, Humboldt County had five and Webster County had 11 in the 2025-2026 school year.

We are sad to say goodbye to Puma. She served the Algona Police Department from 2014-2024.
She has numerous awards, multiple team awards on the national level, has found missing children, apprehended suspects and found narcotics. She was all work.
Officer Ben Gatton had the privilege of competing with her on America's Top Dog. As well as traveling around the US for competition. Puma was always a faithful companion with Ben on duty. Puma loved to work, but was also super sweet to all in her family. She may have been small but knew how to use every bit of her size.

🚨 Medicare Phone Scam 🚨

We want to make the public aware of a Medicare-related phone scam that has recently been reported in our area.

A resident received a phone call from what appeared to be an Iowa phone number. When the caller was questioned about who they were and why they were calling, they immediately hung up. The resident later contacted Medicare and was advised to report the incident and help spread awareness, as similar calls are occurring in multiple areas.

At this time, it is unclear what the scammers’ end goal is, but these calls are often attempts to obtain personal information such as your Medicare number, Social Security number, banking information, or other sensitive details.

Please remember:
🔹 Do not provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers.
🔹 If something doesn’t feel right, hang up.
🔹 Never trust caller ID alone—phone numbers can be spoofed.
🔹 If you believe you’ve been targeted by a scam, report it immediately.

Please share this post to help protect your family, friends, and neighbors. Staying informed is one of the best ways to prevent fraud.
